Interludes

  • Jun. 30th, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Mmmph I am so tired. And it's Monday morning. Shoot me now.

The weekend was a bit strange, to say the least. I went up to Maine on Saturday morning, saw my grandparents, then came back yesterday afternoon and I am still exhausted from that. Traveling is annoying. And then yesterday Germany lost to Spain - I dunno, I would have been happy with either since the Dutch were out, but my sister was supporting Germany and therefore was just as much of a mess as I was after Netherlands v. Russia. We watched the 2008 CL final (again, yay!) to cheer ourselves up.

But despite all this gloom, I feel like something in me has fundamentally changed recently. It's probably just because I'm working now, but I seem to value my free time SO much more than I used to. I enjoy taking my lunch break and going to lie down in the grass on the Boston Commons (I will KILL you if you give me no warning next time, [info]speak_me_fair. You know I will :D). I like taking my Sundays to go and see my dear [info]chumpchkin perform her Indian dance recital (you were GORGEOUS and AMAZING and I love youuuuu).  I think it's nice that I'm taking my sister to see WALL-E tonight (I saw it already on Friday and it was SO good).

Little things, like: walking past an impromptu flower market that's on the sidewalk every morning a few doors down from work. Dashing through a thunderstorm to get back after lunch. Watching football with my sister and developing violent crushes on Dutchmen (me) and Germans/Portugese (her). Hearing window-cleaners roaring with laughter as they tease each other twenty stories up. I like all that. Life is cool, you know?

...ok, that was a long, pointless, sentimental rant. But hey, I like it. :D

...oh and btw, guys. *points to song lyric post* Only 12 / 30? You sadden me. *shakes head* My tastes in music aren't THAT obscure!

Meme snagged from [info]askingfor_roses:

GUESS THE SONG
Step 1. Put your playlist on random.
Step 2. Post the first line (& second for some) from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing. (You can skip songs that are instrumental.)
Step 3. Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

Ups... and Downs.

  • Jun. 23rd, 2008 at 11:46 AM

Well, this has been a really, really crazy week. Prepare yourself for a long post.

The Ups: NYU Orientation. )

In other, much sadder news, the Downs: my Oranje heart is bleeding. )

Then, if my weekend wasn't bad enough, I had a really, REALLY freaky episode on the train this morning on my way to work. I don't know if it was because I a) only slept four hours last night or b) I didn't have breakfast or c) it was just a really hot and crowded train, but I came THIS close to passing out. Legit, full-out fainting spell. I lost my vision, there were dancing blue sparks, I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move for fear I'd fall over, the whole nine yards. I was dropping things, panting. I had to get out a stop before my usual one and just sit down and breathe deep with my head on my knees until the next train, which was much less crowded and cooler. It was really scary. I suppose I must have looked all right, though, because some woman even complimented me on keeping my balance when I bent down to pick up the book I had dropped (said bending over was during a full-on attack of sparks, I might add). Either that or anyone who did notice was just being a bastard, because no one asked if I was okay. Anyway, I got to the office, promptly collapsed at my desk and stuffed myself full of water and granola bars. I guess it worked, because I feel much better now.

*iz le tired and needs food*
Greetings from Manhattan! I'm down here until Friday night for my first NYU orientation. Came down here on the bus by myself (*gulp*) and a day early, since I really didn't want to wake up at 3am tomorrow to get here in time for an 8am check-in. I took the bus from South Station and arrived at 34th W and 8th, then took the subway down to West 4th. I think I must have come out of the station by the wrong entrance, because I had to wander around a bit to find Washington Square Park, but I got there eventually and from there it was easy.

I'm being put up in Hayden Hall, which I really hope I end up in during the regular year, 'cause it's great. I'm alone in my two-bed room right now (suppose I'll get a roommate tomorrow), which also has *three* walk-in closets and a bathroom attached. Seriously, it's like an apartment! And just being in Manhattan is awesome - I'm on the 14th floor and I can still smell some sort of food - maybe Indian? - wafting up from the street. It's noisy, of course, but I expect we actually have it quieter than most because the Park's right outside.

I'll probably be going out to dinner later with some of the other early arrivals. I haven't met anyone yet, but it should be fun! Posting on here over the next few days is a bit up in the air... it looks like they're going to keep us insanely busy.

In other news, THE NETHERLANDS WON AGAIN BWAHAHAH. ....and Italy won. Dirty fucking cheaters. *grumps* Also, how much do I love this description of Edwin van der Sar from The Guardian? OMG. )

This must be bliss.

  • Jun. 15th, 2008 at 11:58 AM

How happy am I right now?

Well, I'll tell you. A) I'm watching the Netherlands paste Italy. Again. :) B) I'm totally in love with the Dutch keeper, Edwin van der Sar. Watch him in action here, because he's friggin' awesome. He also looks quite like my idea of The Chronicles of Prydain's Gwydion, which is fantastic. C) I'm currently listening to John Butler play an absolutely brilliant and beautiful song called 'Ocean.' Watch it here, because it is inspired. D) I've spent the past few days in a pretty much continuous Prydain fest with [info]speak_me_fair. E) I have discovered that the Boston Commons are less than a block away from where I work, so every day during my lunch break I can go and eat there and loll about on the grass. F) I'm getting a guitar - going to look at some of them today to try and decide which to get, as I'm going to have to find one with a small neck to accomodate my titchy fingers.

Oh, and G). I got my first paycheck.

*sinks into a happy oblivion*

AU Prydain ficlet

  • Jun. 11th, 2008 at 10:09 PM
I wrote an AU-ish Prydain drabble thing to cheer myself up... work wasn't so bad today, mainly just boring. Had a rehearsal afterwards, and tomorrow I get to sleep in for an hour (hallelujah!) because I'm playing in a thing at school before I go in to work. Eek, and I just realized I didn't tell my supervisor I'd be in late. Grr.

Anyways, on to Prydain! I was having a conversation with [info]speak_me_fair about how incredibly, nonsensically hot Gwydion is... seriously, as she pointed out, grey hair should not be that smokin'. Nor should his ambiguous, not-quite-but-almost relationship with a psycho!bitch. But, y'know. :D (P.S. Comments make life beautiful.)

*is dead*

  • Jun. 10th, 2008 at 9:43 PM
Oh god work today was sort of horrifying. There was a huge proposal due by the end of the day which has to be in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, so everyone was running around freaking out. Tempers were very short. Nerves stretched. I didn't get out of there until I had put in 11 hours. At minimum wage, I earned myself $80 today and I'd better get every penny. Work in general is fun and as un-boring as being an office gopher can be. Hopefully my schedule will get a bit more normal soon.

Sorry to everyone on  [info]feedback_inc- I haven't had time to go read and comment on stuff, but I will. Speaking of, my RAF drabbles with their 3 comments (including one by me) are getting very lonely. Cheer up a tired gel with some lovely helpful feedback, won'tch ya, darlin's?

(P.S. Thanks, [info]speak_me_fair. My convo was you was pretty much the only bright spot of the day. *hugs*)

A bunch of drabbles

  • Jun. 6th, 2008 at 11:40 PM
Here are a bunch of 'relationship' drabbles I wrote to try and figure out some stuff in RAF... I want comments, folks!

For people who haven't read any snippets or who don't know the parallel, though you don't really need to know them to read the drabbles: Danny=d'Artagnan, Arthur=Athos, Peter=Porthos, Adam=Aramis, Anna=Milady, Catherine=Constance, Colin=Rochefort, Trent=Treville, Richmond=Richelieu. 'Karl' has no parallel - he's an SS officer who befriends Arthur in Buchenwald work camp.

Whoohoo!

  • Jun. 6th, 2008 at 7:29 AM
Guess who has a job interning at one of the country's top architechtural firms which she is starting in a little over an hour? That's RIGHT, bitchez.

(....ok fine, so 'interning' in this case means pushing paper, answering phones, and getting coffee. And I sort of got it because the firm is owned by the parents of my quartet's cellist...)

(...but who cares? I got a job, HAHA!!!)

P.S. - These lyrics sort of sum up everything right now. My life, the future, and, oddly enough, my novel's characters/plot. Enjoy, and then go listen to it - it's a great song.

Well, that was... interesting.

  • Jun. 5th, 2008 at 8:10 AM
Note to self:

Never, EVER create any other Sims that are like one's characters in the novel one is currently writing.

A few....interesting things happened, to say the least.

1) Um, apparently 'Milady' is bisexual. Ok. She sort of glomped the 'Constance'/Catherine sim.
2) Arthur is EVERYBODY'S hobag! And no, I didn't do it on purpose. The Trent!sim seduced him of its OWN FREE WILL. (Me: O_____O) And then the 'Rochefort' sim went for him. And then the Danny!sim. And it just went on, and on, and on. I guess he must be one damn hot sim.

How am I supposed to keep writing now? I'll be laughing my lungs up every time I try. *HEADSDESK*

In other news - [info]speak_me_fair / [info]quoshara (together as [info]shoredfragments) and I have started a new writing community!!! This is special - it's based on the premise that every piece of writing posted gets at least one or two comments/critiques. Like, good ones. Come on and join, everyone!

Graduation and a Meme

  • Jun. 2nd, 2008 at 8:03 PM
Jesus H. Christ, I've graduated.

High school is over. They gave us a little piece of paper and told us to leave.

I am so screwed up headspace-wise right now. SO WEIRD. I don't know what to do with myself!

Oh, I know what. A meme! *wanders off, blinking in a puzzled fashion*

It's the end of an era

  • May. 30th, 2008 at 8:56 AM
Yikes, lots to talk about. *takes a deep breath and dives*

Prom )

In other news, I've written 28,000 words of Arthur's part of RAF, but have since hit a very hard, painful brick wall. Hoping to get back to it soon, though. I also haven't finished A Study in Scarlet yet, though I am very, very close. The job search is getting me aggravated and annoyed, but I'll be following up on some of my applications today and tomorrow, so we'll see what comes out of it (please God, NOT the town summer camp counseling, please - I'm *begging*...).

on youth and politics

  • May. 25th, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I got to thinking this morning about what future generations, and what older people now, think of 'young' Obama supporters - i.e. the 15 to 25-year-olds who are supposedly throwing themselves away in hype and 'empty rhetoric' on a candidate who some adults grumble is inexperienced, an empty suit, too young, not right for the job. Can't take hold of the future, even when old folks have no right to say what is best for the future because they won't have to live in it.

So I eventually came up with the comparison that young folks for Obama are like "Mutt" Williams in the new Indiana Jones film (which I saw yesterday and LOVED). We're greasers. We flip switchblades around. We drop out of school, we ride motorcycles, we wear leather jackets and are constantly combing our hair. We are looked down upon as nuisances by adults, who think we're just trying to act tough.

But when it comes to swordfighting with the KGB in a jungle chase, pulling said adults out of quicksand, gunning our rides through libraries, knocking out agents, and doing Tarzan imitations, lemme tell you one thing. We. Kick. Ass.

Watch out, world. Obama '08.

RAF in Fifteen Minutes

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 8:51 PM

So I CANNOT believe I never posted this. Anyone read the "Movies in 15 Minutes" series on lj? Well last November I started a thread on the NaNoWriMo forums where one could do the same with the plots of their novels. And: drum roll, please!!!

Man do I LOVE these things. :D

Ok guys, I REALLY want feedback on this. Any feedback. The beginning of the second part of RAF, from the POV of Arthur Fairbanks (Athos).

How much do I love my Ipod Touch? So much. SO EFFING MUCH. (And wa-hey, it rhymes! *beasts*) Seriously, it is kind of the best graduation present I ever could have hoped for. Now I have not only enough room for all my songs (my previous Mini model was woefully overstuffed), but I can reach into my pocket at any time and watch Leslie Howard thundering about in Pygmalion. YAY!!! *does a happy dance*

And ZOMG, how awesome a day has today been? Well, I'll tell you. :D

First I had to get up really early in the morning to make crepes for my french class, but it ended up being totally worth it because everyone loved both them and the video my project partner and I showed - it's called "Parle a ma main" - check it out on YouTube, it's kinda awesome! We also had eclairs, croissants, and tarte au tatin from other groups, which made for quite a feast. Then in B block Mr. Colburn most kindly informed us that we will be using all our class time next week to, as he put it, "start a novel." Which made me go SQUEE! X Block was a bit boring, seeing as we were shut up in the auditorium at a mandatory senior assembly ("don't do drugs. don't be stupid. don't do drugs. don't be stupid" ad nauseum, ugh), though I did get to sit with [info]chumpchkin and other friends, which was cool. We spent Euro reading Tarot cards and eating lovely homemade Indian food from a classmate. F block was spent reading Borges (I friggin LOVE his stories. Seriously, they are incredible - he's shaping up to be one of if not my favorite author ever). G block was spent planning a huge potluck lunch for next week and talking about how we can be more energy-efficient in our homes.

I was working on my final science portfolio all afternoon - not so fun, that, and I'm not done yet - and then my quartet went to school to perform in Progressions, the annual dance show. We played the 2nd movement of Ravel's quartet in F major, which [info]chumpchkin and three other girls had choreographed to. And guess what? We ROCKED the house, man! Everyone LOVED it - I can't wait to do it again tomorrow!

And then - yes, hold on, there's more - guess what? I came home to discover that I have a prom date.

XD

Senior skip day tomorrow, too! *sinks into happy oblivion*

IT'S THE CURSE AAAAIIIIEEEEEE

  • May. 11th, 2008 at 10:21 AM

So I was cleaning my room just now - happily going about my own business, singing along to the radio, birds singing, joy to the world, etc. etc., when I suddenly discovered a very sinister object lurking under my bed - an object which has left me highly disturbed.

There is a YANKEES HAT in my room.

......

THERE IS A YANKEES HAT IN MY ROOM!!!!

Now, this would be perturbing enough to any normal Bostonian, but this is much, much worse. For I suddenly realized that....that....

...I am going to college in YANKEE LAND.

I AM GOING TO COLLEGE IN YANKEE LAND.

This is calamitous! It's the end of my life! I will have to live among the enemy! If ANYONE finds out I'm a Sox fan, I will have to sleep for the rest of my four years with a knife under my pillow! God forbid, I might.... I might....

I might actually have to go to a Yankees game.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

(For my friends across the pond, this is like the English national football team going to live in Rio de Janeiro. ManU going to live in Madrid. A Chelsea fan moving to Liverpool. Andy Murray going to live in Geneva. In other words, this is BAD.)

I can just SEE the little bugger of a hat from across the room (behind my barricade). At any second it'll come to life and start leaping about the place, shrieking "1918!!!!!! 1918!!!!!!!!! 1918!!!!!!!!!!" and I'll have to beat it off with crossed fingers and exorcism staffs, screaming back "2004!!!!!!!! 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
