Writer's Block: Eat Your Vegetables

The fall harvest is showing up in markets now, including many of the green vegetables children find so disgusting and yet are forced to eat. What is the most disgusting thing you’ve eaten, either by choice or against your will?

Mussels. When I was staying in France one year, the family I was staying with boiled up a massive pan of the mussels. As it was the only thing they were cooking for lunch, I decided to give them a try - even though they smelt and looked absolutely disgusting.

I managed to choke down one, and I swear I nearly vomited. I really didn't want to come across as rude, but, I felt I had no choice but to not eat any more - it was just so bad.

I have since been told that mussels aren't usually boiled, and maybe that's a reason why they tasted (and smelled, and looked) so repulsive, but, after that little experience, I'm not exactly rushing to try any more.

There are probably other foods I can't stand that I can't think of at the moment, but those mussels were the first things I could definitely remember.

Okay, so, I meant to update about this stuff a while ago, but my previous friends-locked entry took priority over that, I think.

Speaking of which, I'll go into the details of what's been going on about that incident later.

Last Sunday, I went into town with Jem, so we could hang out before she went back to Uni on Wednesday. I did end up buying a few cheap things, such as a DVD, a CD, some underwear and socks, and, most importantly, hay for the guinea pigs.

Speaking of the piggies, they now have names: Gogo and Vivi. ^_^

We then wandered back to my house, where Euan and his parents were setting up the new guinea pig hutch/run. We still need to get a covering for it, though - the nights have been getting pretty cold lately, so the girls need a bit of insulation.

Jem went home shortly after Sheldon turned up. He's having vehicle problems at the moment - his car was written off after some wanker crashed into it (whilst it was PARKED) and then drove away. Thankfully, he managed to get the guy's registration number, and now the police are involved.

My mother's had a bit of sore luck with her car, as well. She scraped her passenger side wing mirror after driving too close to a skip the other day. She felt stupid about not slowing down when she got to the skip, but she thought that the mirror was okay. Until it fell off, that is. Into the middle of a busy road. It was still intact, however, so, she got her car parked somewhere and waited for a safe opportunity to grab the mirror. However, just the traffic seemed to be clearing up... a massive truck sped by and smashed the mirror to bits. Well, shit. At least it wasn't the driver's side mirror.

On Friday, I had an annoying day at the office due to a patronising co-worker, but I can't be arsed to go into that right now.

Yesterday at the supermarket fortunately went by very fast, which kind of diminished the annoyance I felt at my boss near the end of my shift. But, ugh, she was being such an annoying bint.

Aaaaand now I'm gonna go eat something, because I got up late and thus haven't had much to eat yet. *stomach rumbles*

Hiiii. I bring you news of: a couple of really fucking frustrating days at work! Oh, the joy of it all.

Dear Bimbo-esque Customer: What part of "Sorry, I don't work on this department" don't you understand? Oh, and stop getting snippy with me. I don't quite fancy helping you out when you give me nothing but attitude.

Dear Customers in General: Now, most of you guys are very polite. However, WHAT IS IT WITH ALL OF YOU NOT KNOWING WHERE THE SOAP IS?! Seriously, of all the questions I get asked, one of the ones that crops up the most is "Where can I find the bars of soap?". That, and "Where are the hair accessories?". If I had a quid for each time I'd been asked those questions, I'd be a very rich woman.

Dear Lisa: You still suck.

Dear Debbie (not the office one, the supermarket one): Stop pestering me. I know what I'm supposed to be doing, thankyouverymuch. You don't have to repeat the task I need to do over and over again. I GET IT. Also, kindly STOP RUNNING OFF WITH MY FUCKING FLAT TOP TROLLIES. I'm kind of sick of walking away for a few minutes for whatever reason, only to come back and be all "?? Where the bloody hell did that go?". Get yer own! (Or at least ask me first, plzkthnx.)

Dear Harpy-Voiced Woman Who Doesn't Work at the Store, Who Only Comes in to Promote Stuff: Why, when I was going about my duties, did you feel the need to squeal "Ohhhhh, are you here to tidy?" at me in one of the most mind-crushingly patronising tones of voice ever? No, I'm getting something out of the supplies drawer, and, even if I did happen to be tidying, what is it to you? Why would you comment on it, and in that manner?

Also, later on, when I was trying to help a customer, why, as soon as I opened my mouth to answer his question, did you suddenly jump in and loudly interrupt "Oh, I know where that is, I can show you"? What the fuck?! At least wait until I've finished speaking, instead of fucking interrupting!

ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. *whams head against desk*

Ow.

Ahem, in other news, me and Euan went to another car boot sale on Sunday, where I got five books, a bunch of CDs, a Me to You bear, and a Hello Kitty watch, amongst other things.

Beforehand, we stopped off in Morrisons, and... Metal Gear Solid 4 gets!! I'm gonna resist it for a while yet, though... I still need to stubbornly replay the others again, and play Portable Ops for the first time.

Also, Silent Hill: Homecoming is apparently being released this November (I say "apparently", as I got that info from a gaming magazine, and well, I know what they're like). It looks fucking hot. I still need to play Origins, though.

It made me laugh that the magazine complained about the "clumsy" combat of the game, though. I thought clumsy combat in SH was kind of the point? At least, it was in the first game's case, with Harry. If anything, I think it adds to the tension, and the fact that you're playing as pretty ordinary characters who, let's face it, have had little to no experience with weaponry. (ETA: Okay, I just remembered that the protagonist of Homecoming is a soldier, so maybe "clumsy" combat is an issue. I still stand by what I said about the protagonists of the previous games, though.) They also slagged off the puzzles. Each to their own, some of SH's puzzles can be pretty tricky, admittedly - but it simply wouldn't be SH without puzzles, IMHO.

Anyway, I'd best go and make myself some food, or something. It's been a long day and I've got to get up early tomorrow - I'm visiting my dad in the morning, before meeting up with Jem in the afternoon. :)

I was in a really fucking bad mood for no real reason earlier, although my cold may have had something to do with it. The fact that I was landed with a new and incredibly annoying job in the office also didn't help.

I also appear to have been biting my lower lip without realising it, because, when I arrived home from work, I noticed that my lip was hurting and some of the skin was broken. Hmmm.

Euan's decided that he's really not keen on this stocktaking job after all, so he's going to look for somewhere else while he still works at the shop.

In other news, I finally aquired some Dog Soldiers screencaps, courtesy of some lovely person on [info]capitrequests, so I think I'm gonna go on an icon-making spree now. :P

I'm also thinking of rewatching Sugar Rush soon, so I'm making icons from the first season (I would make icons from Season 2, but, alas, I have no screencaps of it as of yet).

Announcement of the day:

Me and Euan now have two guinea pigs! :D :D

They're both female, sisters, around a year old, and very timid. We haven't named them yet, but we will get round to it soon. Hopefully, if we try to handle them gently every day, they will get used to us.

Also, we went to another car boot sale with Sheldon today. \o/ I bought eleven books, nine of which were some Stephen King ones that I didn't have before, a stack of CDs, a Hello Kitty bag, a leather skirt, and some knee-high black boots, amongst other things.

I also managed to split my upper lip this morning. >_< I woke up without realising how dry my lips were, before I smiled, or something, and then it just split. Owie.

Someone, please tell me why I still sometimes visit the IMDB boards. >_< I think I've actually lost a few of my brain cells whilst reading some of the bollocks in there. XD

Also, I just visited a TV-related forum, only to wander straight into a thread degenerating from on-topic discussion into an off-topic console war between elitist fanbrats, basically consisting of "Console A is superior and you're just stupid for liking Console B and you're obviously not a true gamer" and vice versa.

*eyes up all of her assorted consoles and keeps out of it*

Okay, so, yesterday, me and Euan went to a car boot sale. I was expecting to go there and only pick up a few items, but I was amazed at the sheer amounts of stuff we managed to get.

Amongst other things, I bought:
- two DVDs (Dog Soldiers and The Descent)
- four CDs (a single, an album, a double-CD compilation album, and a triple-CD compilation album)
- three PSX games (two of which were the first and third Crash Bandicoot games, so now I don't have to keep borrowing Alice's copies - if these ones actually work, that is)
- Six books (five of which were Stephen King books - Needful Things, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, The Regulators, Skeleton Crew and The Tommyknockers)
- a couple of clocks with Chinese designs on them
- a couple of Oriental-style wall scroll-type things
- a small box of incense
- a Chinese stamp in a nice red box
- a Faith Lehane action figure (no packaging, but in pretty damn good condition)
- a Beanie Baby bear (dark blue with a little Union Jack necktie, with the label name of Pops)
- a small red "Tokyo" top

and, ooh, a few more things.

Euan bought a load of stuff, too, including a couple of games consoles (an old school PlayStation and another Mega Drive), an arseload of games, some cat-related framed pictures, a 1970s book about kittens, a wooden cat ornament, a glass chess/draughts set, a wooden painted ornamental lizard, a leather/suede jacket, and loads more.

I certainly wasn't anticipating the cold, though. True, it was windy and cloudy outside with a chance of rain, but I thought it was going to be really muggy, so I only wore a strappy top and three-quarter length trousers. Boy, was I wrong. I was freezing for ages.

Later, Sheldon picked us up, and he came back to our house for a bit. We sat down and watched the Dog Soldiers DVD I bought, and wow, what an awesome film. I love it. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that it was as funny as it was, really - it's loaded with some brilliant black humour and some truly great lines, and was really fucking tense in places. (Seriously, how can you not love a movie which features lines such as "I hope I give you the shits" from a character about to be eaten by werewolves? XD)

In other news, this icon is sexy.

So... past few days. Yup.

On Sunday, I had Jem over for a few hours. I arsed around on Soul Calibur IV for a bit, before we both played some Mario Kart Wii and SSBB. I then continued with my Super Mario Galaxy save for a bit, which I hadn't played since April. o_O I'm doing alright on it at the moment (but, oh, man, did I suck at the Sweet Sweet Galaxy, or what?). :)

Yesterday, I went to work at the supermarket for Bank Holiday overtime. I spent around three and a quarter hours cleaning a couple of food aisles and getting my hands cut up courtesy of the shelving edges for my efforts, but I think I did a good job, nevertheless. Even if I didn't have time to sweep the floor. I didn't even get bugged by customers as much as I thought I would, and there weren't many screaming children as usual (aside from the one who sounded more like a disgruntled velociraptor than a human child).

Later in the evening, Sheldon popped round for a bit - he's been coming over a lot these past few weeks, both to hang out and to use our bath and shower (he's living with his gran for the time being, and apparently her shower isn't working too well at the moment). He brought round a Sega Mega Drive and the original Sonic the Hedgehog game that he bought for Euan at a car boot sale. :D He also brought round a load of Sega games that he bought for himself.

He's also going to take us to a car boot sale this Sunday, so hopefully the weather will hold up and actually, you know, be nice.

He's also been exploring abandoned buildings lately, and I AM JEALOUS. He's said that he might take us to some one day. Amongst the buildings he's been in, he decribed an old insane asylum he went to, as well as an old hospital for the elderly, and he reckoned that they are some of the scariest places he's ever been to.

I want to go there with my camera. SO BAD. (And probably in the daytime.)

I don't know why abandoned buildings fascinate me so much. They just... do.

Today, of course, I worked at the office. And went shopping. Whoo.

Also, I actually started putting my wedding photos up on Facebook. I really ought to upload them here soon, as well. XD
