Writer's Block: How I got on LJ [ 19.06.2008  |  12:27pm ]

Who introduced you to LiveJournal? Why did you first open an account or get involved?

The summer before my senior year of college, [info]sheenabizarre started working at the booze cruise company for which I also worked in NYC. I don't remember exactly why she suggested I start one, but she did and I took her suggestion. The rest is history. I've met a lot of great people through LJ and am not ashamed to admit it.

New York, I am coming to see you. [ 21.05.2008  |  01:50pm ]
I dunno who's left in NYC (Eric????) but I will be there from May 31 – June 6. Koshi and I are staying in Park Slope with a friend but reckon we will spend a great deal of time pounding around my old haunts. Phone numbers are key for meeting up if you are interested... email me or send me a Facebook mesage (seriously, sorry).

[It is going to be wicked depressing when nobody responds.]

From gaijin to haole. [ 27.12.2007  |  03:46pm ]
Back in Hawaii via the Continental Resort Shuttle aka Wayback Machine. We left Tokyo at 8:30pm on Thursday, 12/27 and got into Honolulu at 8:30am Thursday, 12/27. Gaining an extra day of vacation is pretty sweet, except everyone else is konked out and snoozing in various rooms of the house. That's not so bad though. It's nice to have sit-around-doing-nothing alone time. I'm watching a Dirty Jobs marathon on the Koshis' big TV.

[info]girlracer, I looked in every single shop in Japan with Hello Kitty stuff for your earplugs—and believe me, that's pretty much every other shop in Japan—but I couldn't find any, not even at the airport. Sorry. It was a fun mission though!

Leaving Japan was very sad. Koshi and I have begun thinking of ways that we can live in or around Tokyo for a year or so...

Tune in Tokyo [ 26.12.2007  |  06:36pm ]
Internet friends are an amazing way to see foreign cities. One of Koshi's Flickr friends lives in Tokyo. He's visited San Francisco and knows a bunch of our bike friends, one of whom suggested we get in touch with him when we come here. We did and it's been awesome. Yesterday he took us to Kalavinka and his favorite bike shop in Shibuya. Today he brought a friend along and they took us to a place that has old new bike parts (new in box but made decades ago). I finally got a new stem to replace the ugly one I have and it is really awesome. I also finally got to ride a bike in Japan.

Test Ride
"Oh my god the traffic is reversed I'm going to die!!!"

Test Ride

After not crashing into the crazy old ladies on mama-san bikes, we ate the best tonkatsu ever and went to a bike shop that gets old Keirin frames.

Keirin Uniforms

Koshi really wanted to buy a frame and they had two great ones his size—a Maeda and a Bridgestone—but both were sold. He checked out a Watanabe but it was really beat up and the shop owner wanted about $380 which was absurd for the condition it was in. But I got sweet Nitto handlebars that apparently aren't available in the US yet for $30.

My toys:

New Setup To-Be

I am ready to skip Hawaii and go straight home to put new stuff on my bike. I could also be convinced to stay in Tokyo and buy a new bike here...

Hm. [ 23.12.2007  |  10:01pm ]
It's Christmas eve. I'm in Tokyo now, in the world's smallest hotel room (not kidding, but at least it has a sweet crazy Japanese toilet). Tokyo is basically New York except communicating with cab drivers is slightly easier. You just give them the phone number of your destination, they plug it into their fancy systems, and voila! you're on your way.

I fucked up that link to the images in my last post so let's try again: http://www.flickr.com/photos/agreatnotion/sets/72157603521917894/

Four and counting. [ 21.11.2007  |  06:08pm ]
This is my fourth Thanksgiving away from home. Odd. Those four years flew by pretty damn fast. December 3 will also be my 4th anniversary of living in the Bay Area. Wild.

Before

I am making the usual sweet potatoes and, for the first time ever, cranberry sauce. I found a baked cranberry sauce recipe on the Food Network's website. Seems easy enough and involves bourbon so I'm psyched. I might make spinach with bacon dressing but I dunno how ambitious I am. I feel like we are going to be low on vegetables, though, so maybe I should.

Toys [ 08.11.2007  |  08:42am ]
Lead paint toy recalls blah blah blah, but this one is nuts: GHB toys!
"GHB is this drug that in low doses actually causes euphoria," said Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent. "In higher doses, it can cause people to go into a coma. It can cause seizures. It can cause something known as hypotonia, where all your muscles just become very flaccid.

"And it can cause people to become amnestic, ... which is why it became a date-rape drug," Gupta said.

"So this is nasty stuff, and it appears that the chemical is actually converting into it in the body."

After the last big recall I saw this lady who chairs some board that is supposed to be testing the safety of Chinese imports. She is a complete moron who has never heard of the term "accountability" but is very familiar with "pass the buck." I wonder what they'll send us via toys next!

More Gama-Go [ 07.11.2007  |  11:22am ]
While I was at Gama-Go last week, I also modeled the BoingBoing hoodie. Pesco blogged it today: Boing Boing hoodie by GAMA-GO!

Yes, it's $120 for a hoodie. But it's an art hoodie, and Kid Robot charges much more for their hoodies. I'd be happy to argue that the BB hoodie is far superior. The way the thing is put together is awesome and it's really warm and comfy. But art hoodies are obviously not for everyone and even the phrase "art hoodie" makes people cringe. Why can't art be wearable? Especially in hoodie form, since hoodies are wonderful, comfortable things you get attached to and wear all the time?

Last night was fun. Manned a checkpoint in the Presidio for a Halloween race, saw Stow Lake looking scarier than I've ever seen it (THE FOG!), drank beers, went to a party after everyone else had left, and ate a ton of leftovers out of the fridge when we got home.

Favorite costume of the night: purple people eater. But seeing Jesus sitting at the bar was also pretty great.

I got to hang out in the closed church on the corner of 19th & Dolores (601 Dolores). A good friend of Koshi's and his photographer buddy had the place this afternoon to shoot in there. Pretty crazy, beautiful, and creepy. Apparently it closed because it needs a major seismic retrofitting to be up to code. Some guy bought it to turn into his personal residence but can't do anything until all the shit is cleared out—pews for sale!—and he has the retrofitting work done. Could you imagine your home being an old church right across the street from Dolores Park?

Koshi and I went to see the Doyle production of Sweeney Todd at A.C.T. yesterday. Incredible. It makes me want to start singing again. I might look in to voice lessons again but I want someone who isn't a fucking overpriced douchebag. I basically want someone like my college voice teacher: fun and willing to suggest things I might like and let me choose songs as well. I wonder if he's still alive. Perhaps he's moved from Washington Heights and to the Mission. Does anybody know of a fun voice teacher who doesn't charge an arm and a leg and doesn't suck ass?
