10:08pm: So the difference between VP debates and NFL debates
Back in the day we never got away with telling the judge we wouldn't answer points raised by the opposition if we didn't want to or we didn't want to talk about. That, usually resulted in a loss, or at the very least with your coach hearing about it, which could be worse.

See, I know my old school speech and debate knowledge is coloring my perspective, because by those rules, Biden kicked Palin's ass. Frankly I don't just want a good showing, and someone who can 'address the audience' I want the damn questions answered.

Someone who could actually pronounce the word 'nuclear' would help too. Seriously people there's a frakking 'l' in the word, for the love of little monsters, pronounce it!

6:21pm: So there's this thing
Where I bake when I'm stressed, and lately work, has had me stressed. So today was baking day, even more frightening, it was experimental baking day, where I tested new recipes.

Experiment number one: Banana Chocolate chip bars, a huge success. I wanted to eat the whole pan. Much better way than banana bread to use up old bananas.

Experiment number two: Peanut butter blossoms, they are a marginal success. I misread the directions and put too much flour in so they are a bit dry. I am solving this by filling the bitty holes with jelly rather than chocolate kisses.

Experiment number three: Chocolate Something that was supposed to be frosting but isn't. I ran out of powdered sugar, and tried grinding up regular sugar but the food processor wasn't getting the job done. Added some of the not quite powdered sugar, added more chocolate, added a touch of flour, added more chocolate. Still not quite frosting, a bit too grainy, but it is really good. I have the feeling it would turn into an awesome chocolate sauce it heated to dissolve the sugar, so it is in the freezer for now until my next day off.

Also I have discovered there is such a thing as too much sugar, so I'll be over here licking this salt block. Tonight I shall be heckling Sarah Palin while knitting. Good times.

2:39pm: Random acts of meta
See here is the thing, sometimes I see something random in one of the communities I watch and it gets lodged in my head, especially if I see the conversation going in a direction the opposite of what I think on the subject. Usually I just mull for a few days and then something else shiny catches my attention. I almost never actually put the mulling to print, but for some reason I am in the mood to wax meta, so I shall try to organize my thoughts here. No telling how successful I shall be.
So this whole thing started with an article about the new Green Lantern movie and DB )

Off to visit the 'rents in Indiana. I shall be scarce until Sunday night, so shout here if you think I need to see something. Stupid lack of high speed around my 'rent's house.

10:46pm: As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often
And given the fact that even the dead vote here, it made the myriad of campaign signs lining Sheridan Road between a cemetery and the lake very appropriate.

But seriously if you are in the US and you haven't registered to vote, here is a one stop shop for registering, changing registration and finding your polling place. So stop by, since the deadline for registration is nearing in many states. Vote for Change, why yes this is supported by Obama, why do you ask?

This shit is really too important to screw around with folks. Make yourself heard.

10:49pm: Mmmmm. Yeasty goodness.
I have a bowl full of dough sponge percolating away to be turned into bread tomorrow. My apartment smells of yeasty goodness.

I have a warm computer full of fan fic on my lap, and the only thing I have to do tomorrow is my bills and my homework.

It promises to be 80 degrees and sunny. Life is good.

7th August 2008

2:07pm: I would very much like to never have to do that again!
So I am leaving to go to the grocery store and when I get out in the hallway I smell smoke. I also hear a smoke detector going off. So I walk along the hallway until I get to the door it seems like it is coming out of, and then when I don't hear anything on the other side of the door, like people dealing with burnt food, I feel the door. It is hot. So now that I am shaking so hard I can hardly move I go into my apartment and call 911, then I get some clothes and my computer and I leave. Then I call my building manager and the fire department gets there while I am talking to them, and I let them in the building and I realize I forgot my meds. The I have to give info to the nice police woman on the scene, but I can hardly talk because the stutter I developed gets really bad I'm stressed. So then, I have to wait and I call my brother and he tells me to calm down, but it's really hard. And there is some moron taking pictures like it is some kind of tourist attraction, and no one tells us what is happening, but they say the fire is small and they got it out. They are just trying to make sure it won't come back. Then after what seems like forever but is probably only about 40 minutes they all clear out, and the fire men keep telling me I did a good thing, because earlier I was scared that maybe it had been a false alarm, but they said it was a good thing I called because it was a real fire and no one was home. Then we can go up to our apartments again, and I do and I peek in it wasn't a small fire. The apartment was totalled, and it had damn near spread to the one above.

Fuck. So now, I am eating an entire tub of guacamole, cuz fuck fattening I need comfort food and that's comfort food to me, and I am trying to calm down and not think of might have beens. I am also saying a prayer of THANK YOU, GOD because I could have lost everything if the damn thing had a chance to spread since the guy was two doors down from me. So I am going to go and read fluffy fanfic and keep thinking 'thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou' right now.

7:49pm: Batman and The Dark Knight
Yes for the purposes of this entry they are two different things

I went and saw The Dark Knight today. Without getting into spoilers I will say this. One, they are not exaggerating with how good Ledger is in this movie. Two, saying this is darker than the first movie does not even begin to cover things. Seriously. Three, as someone who lives here, I can see Chicago in this movie a lot, but they do a damn good job of using the city to their advantage.

I liked it, a lot, and I am going to see it again, but it was not what I expected, especially compared to other films in the genre. Definately not a typical super-hero flick. Especially the ending. Although seeing where Nolan went with this, it makes me wonder why they had such issues with where Joss wanted to take Wonder Woman.

And while we are on the subject of Batman, let's move to the campier side of the spectrum and take a look at this humorous gem I saw on the WGN news. Batman or Bush

10:25pm: I can has wheels
Not a car mind (because, really, who can afford gas these days) but I bought a bike today at the Brown Elephant so now I can bike around Chicago and hopefully get more exercise. Of course I probably shouldn't have biked from the Brown Elephant to my apartment (about 3 miles) my first day on a bike since high school, but really it's a bit late for second thoughts. Although it's probably a good thing that it's going to be too hot to move, let alone bike the next few days, because I'm probably going to be a might sore tomorrow.

Also my accident prone arse needs to buy a helmet. Full body armor would be best, but would make peddling hard. Why yes I do fall down standing still, why do you ask?

Someone is setting off some hard core illegal fire works nearby (since there are no official ones near by). My freaking windows are shaking.

11:21pm: Eeeee!!!
I am still in my post class buzz, even though I should be asleep! OMG I missed this so much. Thinking, about something other than what shirt matches what pants or how I am going to deal with Bosszilla. A real discussion about stuff that requires book learnin' and stuff. Sigh.

Also, my desire to ignore classics (like the greek and roman kind) gave me a small nip in the arse, but then again, I'm planning on rereading The Inferno again soon for pleasure (I love this book an insane amount) maybe I'm not as bad off as I think. Really should read Plato though. More reading, yay! But not until I get through with the quantum physics.

11:00pm: knitting and stuff
I was not impressed by knitting socks, it did not enthrall me. I found it tedious after a while. So will someone please tell me why I am starting a second pair of socks.

Also, I am taking a break from a project I haven't even started because I have gotten so pissed at starting and frogging and starting over and frogging over, and starting over again, and frogging over again I am about ready to hurl it out the window. This is not the kind of vibes I want for something that is a gift.

I am currently reading a book called Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed and loving it. The guy who wrote it apparently did a thing on the BBC where he explained how the TARDIS works. He also wrote a book on wormholes, time machines and black holes that I want to read a whole lot. Sometimes the mathish parts of this stuff fry my brain, but damn do I find it fascinating.

Very soon I need to write something here about how science makes me believe in The Big Guy more rather than less. Seriously, the world is fucking amazing and so complicated it makes even the best scientists occasionally go WTF! There has to be an Awesome Being who thought it up. Someone who is so far beyond the smartest of us mortals that creating that WTF causing world was just the beginning.

But I'm too tired to be as clear as the topic demands, so I'll leave it for now. Now if only I could get tired enough to be ready for bed.

1st June 2008

8:47pm: Blurg
I left work sick today for I woke up ill this morning and have been off and on all day. Of course my boss, despite frequent dashes off the sales floor, accused me of just trying to get out of work. I should have herked up on her feet.

Speaking of annoying bitca boss, she is making vague claims that I can't take classes because she desperately needs me for the half hour between 5 and 5:30. Yes, you did read that right. Fucking 30 minutes. I told her if she felt this was that important than I would make sure to find someone to cover those 30 minutes. I'm pretty sure she'll be really fucking surprised when I start pulling in people from other stores. Of course first I need to make sure that I can do that without her permission. Also, I may be informing HR about the fact she feels the need to control our entire lives, oh and probably the tiny fact she doesn't give us our breaks required by law. Oops.

On a lighter note, I have been going on another music spree...and comics. I have bought Common, Vast, the De-Lovely soundtrack, Yo Yo Ma, Sarah McLachlan and may have possibly ordered a John Barrowman cd. I bought 10 comics including my second ever Marvel (Angel: Revelation, the X-Man, not the Vampire which has wicked awesome art). Also, I have been sucked into Green Lantern. Curse you Hal Jordan and your nifty Rebirth plot.

Tomorrow work, Tuesday: groceries, knitting and laundry with a healthy dose of vegetating.
