Now you're talkin'!
According to Twitch who read it on Cine21, Bae Doo-na (The Host, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance) is going to start in the next film by Hirokazu Koreeda (Nobou Knows, Hana)!

I just don't care anymore.
The first teaser trailer for The Uninvited has hit the internets and despite the fact that it's a remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters (one of my favorite movies of all time) and the fact that it looks incredibly lame, I can't seem to manage any sort of emotional reaction.

You can watch the trailer on YouTube or you can download the HD version here in [info]trailer_spot's LJ.

I don't know. Anymore it seems like a waste of time/attention to get upset about these things.

Having said that, here's to hoping the film falls flat on it's face and loses a lot of money.

Cheers!

I don't think I'd want Mickey Mouse pimping for me, anyway.
I swear to god, one day I will be caught up.

• Some time ago, it was widely reported that the Weinstein Company had acquired the rights to the Thai action flick Chocolate (read my review), but apparently that was either not the case or they have relinquished those rights and now Magnolia has the rights. This is seriously fantastic news. Especially the part that says the film will be released theatrically in 2009.

• A fantastic interview with writer Greg Rucka can and should be read here. LOTS of Queen & Country talk.

• This is the poster for The Uninvited, aka the American remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters:

I don't know why I bother to mention that. Does anyone care at this point?

Akira is coming out on Blu-Ray in February!

• An interview with Chuck Palahniuk about the film version of Choke can be read over here. The Lady and I saw the film a couple of days ago and we both enjoyed it quite a bit. It made me want to re-read the book again, so I think I'll do that as soon as I'm done with Kafka On The Shore.

That's what I got right now. I would say that I'll be updating again soon, but you and I both know that the chances of that being true are currently slim.

There Will Be Gore
I've just watched the incredibly violent red band trailer for the upcoming Punisher: War Zone movie.

And I may have to re-think my preconceived notions about this movie. I might actually enjoy it.

I still think it looks kind of lame, but... wow, he stuck that chairleg in the dude's eye!

Speaking of Punisher, I had plans to do a big, long post lamenting the fact that Garth Ennis' run on The Punisher has come to an end, but I just haven't had the time or the patience. Maybe later. But for now, I'll just say that not only is that book the best Punisher book ever BY MILES, but it might even be my favorite of all time, by anyone, ever.

Didn't see that one coming.
Remember earlier this year when Seth Rogen was talking about making a movie of The Green Hornet and how he wanted Stephen Chow to play Kato? And everyone was thinking "Sure, Seth. Dream that dream."

Well...

Not only is Chow playing Kato, but he will be directing the movie, too.

YES.

Impulse control... FAILING.
You guys...

I don't speak Japanese. You might think that this fact would be enough to stop me from importing DVDs from Japan that aren't subtitled. The cost alone should be prohibitive enough, for a sane person, but when you add in the lack of subtitles, it's just hard to figure out why someone would pay a lot of money for it/them.

And yet here I am.

The DVD in question is a recent Japanese release of Yasuzo Masumura's 1978 film Sonezaki Shinju, aka Love Suicides at Sonezaki or Double Suicide at Sonezaki. I'm a big Masumura fan. He's had 6 movies released in the US, I've got them all and I enjoy them all to some degree or another. The real, actual reason I want this particular film so very badly, though, is because Meiko Kaji's in it.

It's not just that she's in it, but in Chris D.'s interview with her in his book, Outlaw Masters Of Japanese Film, she says it's the work she's most proud of. It's also notable because she was nominated for 5 different awards for her role and won 4 of them.

I've been trying to track down a copy of this movie for years. And I just found out the other day that it was released on DVD in Japan in June of this year. Since then, I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find a cheaper place to get it online, whether that meant a torrent, a download of some sort, a bootleg DVD... ANYTHING. Thus far, I have had no luck.

So here I am. The Japanese DVD is available through Amazon Japan for about 36 US dollars before shipping. This is the cheapest I've been able to find it, and it's also probably the most reliable. I've ordered plenty of Meiko Kaji stuff from Amazon Japan before. Figure the final price with shipping will be in the realm of $50 or so.

$50. For a DVD without subtitles.

In defense of the idea, the movie is based on a story which you can read a synopsis of on Wikipedia. So I probably wouldn't be totally unable to follow the film. But...

$50. For a DVD without subtitles.

What do I do?

Order the motherfucking DVD, that's what I do.

Duh.

I can't believe you think that's a Schwinn...
I am recently arrived at home after seeing the new Coen Brothers film, Burn After Reading.

I was going to write a review of this movie, but I got a couple paragraphs in and I just wasn't feeling it. So I'll sum it up for you: VERY FUCKING FUNNY. It's a lot like some of the older Coen Brothers comedies, like The Hudsucker Proxy or even Raising Arizona. It's got the same sense of humor. Brad Pitt is so goddamn awesome in this movie. I mean, I think Pitt is pretty awesome in most everything he does, but... uh... yeah.

Anyway, if you enjoy the Coen Brothers sense of humor, you're going to want to see this. Highly recommended.

And while I'm here, last night I saw Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django.

Did you ever see Miike's Happiness Of The Katakuris? Well, this was kind of like that, except it was a western. REALLY funny, but also seriously insane. The film is almost completely in english, but all of the actors except Quentin Tarantino are Japanese, and the majority of them don't speak english all that well. This is somewhat frustrating at times, because it can be difficult to understand what they're saying, but it's also absolutely fucking brilliant within the context of the movie. Miike and co. fit in just about every single western film cliché you can imagine and the fact that the actors are saying these ridiculous lines in broken english makes it so campy and ridiculous, you can't help but laugh your ass off.

There isn't really a whole lot more to say about it, other than Kaori Momoi OWNS in this movie.

"But, adgy," I hear you say. "She looks kind of old and not that hot." Maybe, but you need to see this woman in action. She is BAD ASS in this movie. Completely stole the show. Rocked that shit. Slapped those bitches down. Knocked those fuckers out. Ate their fucking hearts. Shat out their fucking souls. For reals.

Miike fans may recognize her from Izo, but she's probably best known for being in Memoirs Of A Geisha, which is unfortunate. I guess she was also in Kurosawa's Kagemusha, but I haven't seen that in quite some time and don't remember her.

Anyway. Sukiyaki Western Django is coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 11th. If you don't get a chance to see it on the big screen, I highly recommend checking it out then.

And again.
So there's this Swedish vampire/horror film that I've been hearing a lot about and wanting to see really badly called Let The Right One In...

...and I just found out today that I'll get the opportunity to see it soon.

Magnet Releasing will be releasing the film in limited US release:

10/24/2008
West Hollywood, CA: Sunset 5
New York, NY: Angelika Film Center

11/14/2008
Seattle, WA: Varsity Theatre

Fuckin' groovy.

Never heard of the movie? Well, you can read [info]mrstroppy's review of it right here and then become one with both rage and jealousy once you realize it's not playing in your town (unless you live in or around one of those three listed above). And I can continue my life with that smug sense of win that permeates every fiber of my being on certain days.

Local peeps.
I would like to remind (inform?) people in the LA area that this is opening at the Nuart tomorrow:

For some ridiculous reason it doesn't say it on the poster there that this is a new Takashi Miike movie, but it is.

Takashi Miike. Doing a western.

Yes.

Is that erection for me? Or Miike? I told you about it, you know.

Also, Quentin Tarantino's name is on the poster because he actually has a role in this movie.

One review says:

"Sukiyaki Western Django is Sergio Leone on LSD. It's every '60s/'70s revisionist western riff supersaturated in stylized bombast and a purposed perversion of the motion picture mannerism."

At the Nuart, which is probably my favorite theater, starting tomorrow. One week only.

Official Website

I'll be there at the late showing (9:55pm or whatever) tomorrow night. Anybody else?

So you never saw her use her powers?
The Lady is out of town this week and it sucks. Hard.

But all is not lost.

More like this.

Honestly? Things like this or like this give me hope for the future of humanity sometimes. Seriously.

Politics on the internet.
If you're like me, then you didn't watch any of the conventions for either party because you can't fucking stand the fact that a 12 minute speech takes 30 minutes to say because everyone wants to applaud for 2 minutes every 30 seconds. So what you do instead is keep an eye on something like [info]ontd_political or [info]jlassen's blog and read up on what's being said. So you can stay informed without having to keep a barf bag nearby at all times.

I'm going to post some embedded videos that I've watched this evening here in case you have done neither. I'll put them under cuts in case embedded videos fucks up your browser or something, though. See how nice I am? You can tell I'm not a politician.

The first video I want to post is the *ahem* 9/11 "tribute" video shown during the Republican convention. Someone edited in Keith Olbermann's response to it right afterwards, which is fine because he's absolutely spot on with what he says about it. It's incredibly disgusting and exploitative and is something I would have expected to see on Bill O'Reilly's show, not at the goddamn RNC. Seriously. Fear-mongering cocksucking horseshit.

There's no actual tribute here... )

Speaking of Bill O'Reilly, he recently interviewed Obama and aired the first segment of that interview on his show recently. The most notable thing about the clip is that Obama didn't punch that douchebag in the nose for interrupting him every 10 seconds. I don't think I could have restrained myself in such a fashion.

Also, Obama defended himself pretty well, I thought. )

And my man [info]benchilada posted this clip after someone else posted it of Joe Biden's post-RNC speech that I found to be pretty goddamn awesome.

Ownage. )

And lastly, both the Daily Show and the Colbert Report have been on the fucking Win circuit for quite some time now, but Jon Stewart and Co. completely decimated McCain's claims about being the agent for change the other night. Beyond all doubt.

That particular bit starts at about 4:19 on this video )

And that's all I have to say about that.

I wish I was allergic to cilantro.
Some bits and pieces.

• Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django opens in New York this week and is playing LA in mid-September. Excellent Japanese film news website Ryunganji has an interview up with Miike about the film. I can't wait to see it. I've been putting off buying a non-US copy on DVD in the hopes that it might be getting a limited theatrical release and it looks like that actually paid off. Amazing.

Wizard Universe.com has an interview with Edgar Wright up. Good shit.

• Good news! There will be no Preacher HBO series! Actually, I'm not opposed to an HBO series per se, I'm just opposed to Mark Steven Johnson being anywhere near anything to do with it.

• Speaking of live action adaptations of Garth Ennis books, two writers have been hired to adapt The Boys into a film. I have a hard time imagining a live action film of that series being anything like the book. It'll probably be more like Wanted.

• Remember a few months ago when Chinese actress Tang Wei was blacklisted by Chinese Officials for allowing herself to be all naked and having sex in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution even though her co-star Tony Leung wasn't and a commercial she was in was taken off the air? Well, it looks like she has been granted denizenship by Hong Kong. Which is good news. Denizenship: an alien admitted to residence and to certain rights of citizenship in a country. I assume this means we may start seeing her in movies again.

• Aaaaaaand then bad news. Mathieu Kassovitz, director of the upcoming Vin Diesel/Michelle Yeoh movie Babylon A.D. has been saying some very bad things about the movie and the experience he had making it. "I'm very unhappy with the film," he says. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the
