| Choke (2008) |
[02 Oct 2008|03:07pm] |

Choke (2008)
This role is only for Sam Rockwell. If you’re a fan of Chuck Palahniuk (beyond just Fight Club) you’ll like this movie. The humor is effectively dark and steady. It echoes Fight Club’s first person narration, for example, “I am the backbone of colonial America!” and the disillusionment of a promised “secure” adulthood. The novel, Choke was a lot like that anyway, it’s a reflection of Chuck’s written voice. Well, most of his novels are like that. I could transplant “Jack’s id” from novel to novel and even though that’s not a bad thing it can force someone to compare it to other works when they seem to be on the outside very similar in character.
I got past my feelings regarding parallels to Fight Club months after toiling through Choke (it wasn’t a fast read for me). Seeing the movie today I really didn’t think twice about comparing the two. Now that I sit and write this it does have many similarities; more than I’d like to admit. It doesn’t ruin the movie for me, I really like it. It’s a different beast than Fight Club and I don’t want another Fight Club anyway. If it wasn’t a Palahniuk novel and the movie was the way it is without Chuck’s name, I wouldn’t think twice. Would I still like it? Yes, it’s because of what draws me to Palahniuk’s work to begin with. What that is specifically I can’t really say but maybe he’s the Voice for the disappointed and disillusioned thirty-somethings like myself.
4/5
Okay now I need to go and finish my very late Score-Off Challenge™ now that I finally have a full day off!

1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 56. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions. 5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
"Remove a color cast from an image using Auto Color correction.
Adjust the saturation and brightness of isolated areas of an image using the Sponge and Dodge tools.
Apply the Unsharp Mask filter to finish the photo-retouching process.
Save an image file for use in a page-layout program.
This lesson will take 45 minutes to an hour to complete. If needed, remove the previous lesson folder from your hard drive, and copy the Lesson02 folder onto it. If you need to restore the start files at any time, copy them from the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book CD."
Note: page 56 for me was one of those "This page left intentionally blank" things so my contribution is actually from page 58.

Many assume I've seen every film ever made. At work I'm the resident Film Encyclopedia. I suppose I know more than most but I'm far from an expert. When "Beat The Geeks" were on I held my own but the Movie Geek got deeper into things like Producers and Writers, that's hardcore; or I should say "hardcorer". I have to say Netflix is the greatest thing ever. Although they don't have everything I'm looking for they definitely have thousands of movies I haven't seen. Right now I have over 500 in my queue and since I joined in January of this year I've rented/watched 240 movies. That's about one movie a day which sounds right. When I was unemployed I watched a lot more. The great thing about movies is I don't think one person could see every single one. I'll never run out! There are more and more coming out everyday!
So why can't I make my own?
Anyway, just when I think I've seen a good cross-section of odd movies I watch this the other day: NOT WORK FRIENDLY
Forbidden Zone (1980) is pure delight! Like School House Rock having anal sex with The Wiz while donkey punching Rocky Horror. It's given me a different appreciation/perspective for Danny Elfman. How could you pass up a movie featuring Hervé Villechaize?

[08 Sep 2008|06:49pm] |
Damn you September... lots and lots of these damn Blu-Ray discs coming out this month (including Carpenter's The Thing - could very well be the best Blu-Ray release yet!). Also I really want to buy the game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed but it's freaking $60 and all these damn Blu-Ray discs are coming out... gwrrrrr. September/October is white-knuckle bills time for me. Both my half-annual car insurance and property tax is due so this is a wallet tightening time for me but all these damn Blu-Ray discs are coming out!
Oh well, I'll live... and live within my means.

Well well well... more solid news regarding a Ghostbusters 3 movie:

CGI? CGI!!!??? Oh hell no. I'm going to worship the video game when it comes out and that's all the CGI I want. This is what I want from GB3: I want Ramis, Murray, and Ackroyd (I really don't care about anyone else - not even Slimer)
I also want them live-action (pay Murray whatever he wants).
I want the perky sarcastic innocence (sans goody-goody groan-inducing Statue of Liberty scene of GB2)
Bigger effects, larger stakes.
Fun fun fun!
Please don't fuck it up.
