I love the things you don't know about your friends until your read their 'special skills' on their resumes. It starts with Wait,YOU played the little boy in the that play I saw four years before we met? and soon devolves into Really? Fluent in French AND Spanish?  or You have your Z Card?

I'm most of the way through Peter Thompson's 'The Battle for Singapore', how he doesn't actually say at any point 'I cannot believe what this fella did just there' I really don't know... also, they didn't use cardboard cut-outs but what really happened wouldn't fit in a single frame...

'Plans to endow a Charlie Wilson chair in Pakistan studies at the University of Texas have riled the college’s liberal academics, who feel he is too “gung-ho” to be a role model for students.

They say Wilson’s support for Afghans fighting Soviet occupiers during the 1980s, when he covertly funnelled American government aid to the mujaheddin, led to the rise of the Taliban and its allies in al-Qaeda. “It is outrageous,” said Dana Cloud, professor of communications at the university. “I thought it was a joke.”'

Not Baracktly! [Sep. 6th, 2008|03:43 pm]

The internets are furiously busy forwarding some stuff and of course I've got the "fuck all this email bullshit" bug. So here's some more in that vein. You might have seen or know someone who forwarded the "Terry Anderson, Black LA Talk Radio host listed the following "Not Exactlys" regarding many of Obama's claims..." email. I love that email because it's so perniciously sleazy!

Some ammo for your rebuttals )

Too Many Posts [Sep. 6th, 2008|02:09 pm]

Well! It is Feast or Famine for me as far as livejournal posts are concerned it seems. I am clogging the heck out of your computer.

But anyway, it is a day of mark so here goes another one. Today is my last day of work in Alberta, and after a total of 2 years in this province and one in British Columbia my bags are packed and I leave the West tomorrow. Alberta and BC are things to miss, the oil sands, not so much. What will you do without my constant whining? I know you are sad to see it go.

I have liked speaking now and then about the oil sands, because it seems to me that it is a hidden part of the country that few know much about, even though the cash generated from northern Alberta is insane, the impact on the country, enormous. I have yet to read an article from a journalist who tries to give a picture of Fort McMuray's oil boom without getting it wrong. Anyway, not finishing the dailies, I made a few sketches for this last day, here they are:

See you later, Western Canada, I didn't even get to go to Drumheller

My dictation software just rendered "tangled" as "cane pole."

I know my Southern accent is stronger than I like to think, but that's just mean.

Y'know, it occurs to me... I never actually posted to say that the summit of my life has been reached: I now own Rock Band.

Unsurprisingly, I adore the ever-living fuck out of it. I spend waaaay too much time playing in band mode by myself by singing and playing bass at the same time. (I can even do this on Hard now for songs I actually know the vocals to at all. Trying to do songs I don't know at all, though, is horrifying.) I also habitually dragoon Beth into playing with me. Poor thing. Seriously, though, playing with multiple friends is the most fun ever, and more people should come over so that I can dupe them into playing as well. :)

There was this ongoing saga wherein I tried to open "Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria for days and days without actually having worked out how the gaining new songs mechanic worked. Then I finally pulled up the internets and figured out how I was *supposed* to get new songs and did it in short order. Except I had to fumble my way through Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld by myself on both vocals and bass, and it was some sort of travesty. Still worth it, though. :D

Also? Me singing "Wave of Mutilation" in my quasi-operatic voice=funniest goddamned thing ever.

Also, also? I made a whole playlist of a bunch of Rock Band songs on my computer so that I can learn the vocals better. *is not pathetic at all, no really*

So yeah, come over. Friiiieeeends!

* fill in number table for LVHV, recursive cases
* fill in correlation table LVHV, recursive cases

* find case(s) that will break .40, .50 STD -- where they'll disagree a lot with the models they agreed with before
-- post to work LJ about reqs
-- make dist
-- save dist
-- make LJ entry
-- save heuristic results
-- make IRM files
-- export
-- run all IRM files
-- import
-- record results

-- make word file
-- send out

* fill in table
-- people results
-- people/model correlations
* write to DB et al - brief report
-- issues: order of pimwits in graph (local context)
-- psychophys scaling
-- do people actually recurse? old evidence vs. new

Rate-My-Professors and such [Sep. 6th, 2008|09:59 am]

academics_anon

[bluestocking7]
My colleagues and I were recently in a mini-debate about http://www.ratemyprofessors.com and I would love to hear your take on this. We all agree that students seem to place more value on the site (and others like it on Facebook) than the instructors do. What we don't agree on is if they can be a useful tool or not.

One argument says that we should acknowledge and embrace those sites - even add our reviews to our Teaching Portfolios because prospective employers will look there anyway, and the site is "less biased" than the in-class evaluations done at the end of the semester because they are unsolicited.

The other school of thought is to ignore them altogether because the only students who add entries are those who really, really, really liked a professor...and those who absolutely did not...so it's a very skewed perspective on the far ends of the pendulum.

So what do you all think?

Election [Sep. 6th, 2008|06:42 am]

beatonna
It is widely rumored (talked about in the news all the time that is) that Stephen Harper is going to dissolve Parliament and call an election tomorrow. Have you seen the new ads with 'Harper at home'? Come, sit down on the couch, let ol' Steve tell you what's on his mind.

Oh baby! That music is soothing. To see the rest, well hey the Conservative Party of Canada has its own Youtube channel, including one where they get to town bashing Stephane Dion (ouch). I think we are probably all better off without watching commercials from any side, but I can't help but wonder what is coming next.

I confess that I am a bit starstruck by Dion's deputy, Michael Ignatieff. The scholar politician! I vote him for: My Husband. For something that is interesting to read, check out his debate with Jack Granatstein from the Dominion Institute's 'Great Canadian Questions' project. What has the Dominion Institute been doing lately anyway? I do not know.

(How to) Making your own graham cracker type crust out of granola? [Sep. 6th, 2008|09:01 am]

Hey! Help!

Okay, I am going to make a vegan chocolate peanut butter pie for my boyfriend (so I can freak him out and then go, "HA HA it's Vegan and HEALTHY and you LIKE IT!) My problem is I need to make my own crust but I do not have any graham crackers. Nevermind-- my mom got out of her garden and called me back... I made the pie-- crappy cell phone pic below-- review of pie to follow after it sets :)
