Ask abunchofrandom: Why don't they ever cancel classes?

Another low-pressure zone brings more beautiful white snow. Snowbowl is open (and, I hear, awesome - all powder), the roads are icy, Owen has 3 inches of snow covering the road he lives on, and Flagstaff United School District cancelled classes.
And yet, NAU is still open for business! What's going on?
Well, according to this article from Inside NAU, a lot.

Snow closure decisions begin with the NAU Police Department and Capital Assets and Services. When snow and ice become a concern, the two departments analyze Department of Public Safety highway information, study the road conditions on and around campus, and review the weather forecast. NAUPD and Capital Assets then make a recommendation to McMahon on NAU's ability to conduct normal campus operations. You know, everyone except the students, who want to take the day off to go snowboarding. So next time it's snowy, don't get your hopes up - you'll need to save that precious energy to shovel out your driveway.
McMahon consults with the president and the campus leadership before deciding.
"I don't make this decision on my own," McMahon explained. "We work as a team here and try to take everyone's concerns into consideration."
