2015

Two people, Robin sloan and Matt Thompson, decided to make a flash movie about the Internet in the year 2015.  It apparently has succeeded in scaring the hell out of those who run established media.  Take a look:

Like VCR killed Movies , The internet killed TV and oh wait..

Let's work out where this all falls downs. The assumption here is that regulatory bodies will have nothing to say about this, Most of the carriers , who mostly are "established media" are going to just sit back and allow this. In many cases a local government granted monopoly is already in effect with regards to who can cable, and profit from ,an area. So unless some unregulated carrier appears I don't see it occuring like this in the US for far longer, if at all.

Also watch an earlier take on it http://www.idorosen.com/mirrors/robinsloan.com/epic/ Epic 2014 which , needs a fast forward button, though doesn't have the happy ending of the 2015. With blogging and podcasting the professional writers and radio talent make up a high percentage of the top 50 ,about 90% on the podcast front and mostly people that don't have a social axe to grind are looking to join those ranks , why else would the shows that imitate broadcast radio be doing do well?

People can cook, restaurants have not gone out of business. Camcorders didn't kill broadcast tv so if we're still in alive in 2015 I bet you that social media will still not be the source by which the masses receive their information. They have a choice now, they are not taking it, once I hear people say.. "well the public just aren't educated yet" High minded codphrase for "we'll tell you what's good for you"

Both models in 2014 and 2015 have that choice just delivered with a different flavour.

My rather uncharitable take on this is that it does not really matter where an uncritical thinker gets his or her information, as the information will not be comprehended or put to good use.  I do believe that academic, media, and political elites have created institutions and influences whose effects have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of critical thinkers in the general population.  Just how many of these people there are should become evident as they gradually drift away from the common cultural songbook created by the elites of church, state, college, and media.  A more mature and enlightened society might create the kind of democritization of information they foresee in 2015, but I think instead we will see demagoguery and fragmentation.

Yeah, they interviewed one of the creators.  It was pretty casual.
