Make your reservations as soon as you have decided on travel plans. Airlines give discounts for early bookings at least 21 days in advance. The best rates are often those that include a Saturday night stay and have travel dates during the week.
Shopping the Internet can be the quickest and easiest way to compare many different Airlines’ rates to find the best deals. You can also use OneTravel.com exclusive "Farebeater Ultra".
If you can be flexible about when you travel, do so. It can bring big savings. Even changing a flight’s time during the same day can effect the rate. Often the less popular early morning or late evening flights have lower rates.
The best rates tend to be found during the off season and at other times when the Airlines are flying at less than capacity.
Check into splitting your trip into two round trip sections. A stopover at a midpoint could save you over flying a direct route. Although, make sure the saving are large enough to warrant the extra hassles of the stopover.
Check into booking your travel plans as a package. You might be able to save by booking your Airline tickets along with your hotel room or rental car.
Ask if this is the best rate that they have available when you are booking your reservation.
Apply any special discount programs for which you are eligible.
When you reach check-in, ask to see if any special upgrade deals are available.
Take some time to look for the best rate, a little research can bring big savings. Airline ticket prices vary wildly and you want to be the one that paid $200.00 roundtrip, not the guy in the next seat that paid $600.00.

Busy planning my next trip, this one will be most likely Singapore, but since I'm the maintainer, I figure it's only appropriate to make a cameo post from time to time to show I'm still here.
Having trouble looking up destination codes for flights. Try www.airports.com enter the name of the city you're departing or arriving and it will give you the three letter abbreviation.

Basic Advice for Air Travel

Allow Extra Time for Special Circumstances During busy periods, or when traveling with young children, infants, elderly or disabled passengers, you build in even more time.
Do Not Leave Your Car Unattended in Front of the Terminal Airport parking rules are being strictly enforced and your car may be quickly ticketed and towed.
Keep Your Photo Identification Handy If you do not have a photo ID, make sure you have two pieces of identification, one of which must be issued by a government authority. Minors are not required to have identification. Failure to have proper identification may result in additional security scrutiny. Some airlines may prohibit you from boarding without proper ID. For international flights, airlines are required to collect your full name and ask you for a contact name and phone number.
Beware of Unattended Packages If you see an unattended package or bag in the terminal, report it to the airport security staff or other airport authority.
Know What You Are Carrying Watch your bags while you are at the airport and don’t accept packages from strangers. Be prepared to answer questions about who packed your bags and whether you might have left them unattended at any time. Think carefully and answer honestly--history has shown that criminals and terrorists use unwitting passengers to carry bombs or other dangerous items on board aircraft, either by tricking passengers into carrying packages or by simply slipping items into unwatched bags. If you have any doubts, say so.
Humor is Not an Option Do not joke about having a bomb or firearm in your possession. Security personnel are trained to react when they hear these words. Penalties can be severe, and can include the possibility of time in prison and/or fines.
Expect to Have Your Bags Searched Both carry-on and checked bags are subject to being hand-searched, especially when airline security personnel cannot determine by X-ray the contents of a package. Leave gifts unwrapped until after you arrive at your destination. Airline security personnel will open it if X-rays are unable to identify the contents.
Leave Your Firearms and Hazardous Goods at Home There are many hazardous goods that are either not allowed on the aircraft. Do not pack or carry firearms, fireworks, flammable materials, household cleaners, or pressurized containers. Violations of hazardous materials regulations can lead to severe civil penalties, as well as possible criminal prosecution.

Airfare Wars - Internet vs Travel Agencies

Some FAQs between net shopping and using a travel agent for travel. Sorry for the cut and paste job, I've been over worked with photography deadlines this month! Before getting in to the article I will make note about my travel. I've used the net to look for cheap fares.
For my first trip to Scotland, I went online, but for twenty more than what the web advertised, I was able to buy my tickets from a third party travel agent. For me it was well worth the extra twenty to physically have a ticket in my hand rather than a conformation number printed out from the net, but had I bought them from Icelandair directly I could have saved twenty bucks. (I didn't know they would have mailed me the tickets directly!) When I went to Iceland I booked directly through the Icelandair, and they physically mailed me my tickets. Same for going to Japan, I booked directly though the JAL, and they mailed me my tickets.
I found both JAL and Icelandair offered cheaper rates than anything I could find on the web, and cheaper than using a third party travel agent. Let me rephrase that, I found it cheaper for all-inclusive travel packages than for airfare alone. There was a bit of a learning curve. I guess in the end I prefer neither the travel agent, nor the web, and I prefer to work directly with the airlines.

While looking at a new job possibility, one that required 100% travel, I came across this article last night. Guess the days of being a paid air courier is now long gone, but for anyone with an open schedule, it seems people can fly free a heavily reduced cost as a courier. ( Your Mission: Be a Courier )
