A Day in the Life is done. Really have some issues with the ending - Chapter 21, in particular - but I like the final chapter and what's done is done.

Got Dig Out Your Soul, and I absolutely love it (surprise, surprise). Waiting for the Rapture and I'm Outta Time and Falling Down = love.

Went to the State Fair, was bored, but I ate greasy food and saw a friend I haven't seen in a while so all in all a good day.

Really busy, but oh well. Need to write.

Yeah, it's past 4 in the morning. I'm having no luck sleeping. This happened the night before Boston, too - dunno if I'll just chuck sleeping altogether or if I'll try again in a few minutes.

Anyway, one more chapter left to edit/post for A Day in the Life. After that's done I'll start editing the X-fic, which (if memory serves) is eleven chapters. I'm currently working on the sixth chapter of my Harry superhero fic, and I don't know when I'll continue writing Tommy 12. At some point I hope to fit in a Ron/Luna novella (yayyyyy Wilco) and a few one-shots, but we'll see.

The Cowboys game today was outright depressing. Besides that it's been a pretty interesting weekend; visited the Emory campus in (well, just outside of) Atlanta. Beautiful area.

Um. Well.

You! Yes, you there! *points* Talk to me! I'm bored at four in the morning and I'm seeking entertainment!

I'm weird.

More political whining by yours truly. Skip if uninterested. )

Lest this turn into a political blog, I finished my X-Men Lance/Kitty fic, finally, and I'll start editing it coming up here. Besides that, not too much is going on. Looking forward to House, whenever it starts. Hope it hasn't already.

Life is good. The Lucifer Effect is fascinating. The Palin controversy (the trooper story, daughter's pregnancy, links to secessionist party) is at times amusing and at times worrisome. While I think for a party steeped in "values" the pregnancy certainly seems to be a blow against that image - a potential hypocrisy, considering Palin's defense and support of abstinence education - I think Obama has set a nice example for everyone by taking the high road, as I expect McCain would do in a similar situation, and I'm going to follow that example, especially considering my own family history. I may not like the GOP, but I respect both the candidates in this election and I'm glad for the most part they seem to be respectful (relatively speaking). The trooper incident is intriguing but it'll take a while before we know more about that, so I'm not going to waste too much time on it. The secessionist party issue is very worrisome, but again, I want to see more on this.

Something that REALLY irritated me:

In which Fiorina accuses Dems of sexism.

This charge really aggravated me. Senator Obama questioned Palin's ability to manage and lead; NOWHERE did he reference her sex or make a derogatory comment on her capabilities as a woman. NOWHERE. The GOP has questioned Obama's experience and ability to lead: is that racist? No, it's simple politics. And then Biden's remark about Palin being prettier than him - it's a harmless joke. "Harmless" jokes can become dangerous, yes, but this wasn't. It was a light-hearted comment and no malice was intended.

Stop comparing Governor Palin and Senator Clinton. They are nothing alike. I believe Clinton did suffer from sexism in her campaign - as I believe Obama has occasionally suffered from latent racism - but this is nothing like that. Senator Clinton is qualified to lead this country. Governor Palin is not. Crying "wolf" like this is only trivializing this issue, something that we cannot afford at this critical juncture, in my (apparently not very) humble opinion. By making this just another issue you're playing to the prejudices of a historically sexist society. Stop it and focus on the issues. We can't afford such irresponsibility from a woman many see as a leader.

So. I really have not done anything at all today, besides watching CNN and, briefly, Swordfish on TNT. I've been listening to Wilco and the Verve and now Definitely Maybe, which for some reason always makes me very nostalgic. No clue why.

I've finally convinced myself to write some of the X-fic, which is ridiculously close to done but needs a LOT of editing. I'll probably edit ADitL today or tomorrow - it's weird to think that it's almost finished posting. Luckily, the HP WIP is still mercifully in its early stages. I need to write Tommy, but I just don't feel like it, so I won't until I garner some inspiration.

Today's probably going to consist of reading and not much else. I am SO exciting!!!!

Still following Gustav coverage. It looks like Jindal (from his press conference) and even Perry (not a fan of him) have all their shit together, but we'll see. Hopefully the preparations hold.

I am such a nerd. *erases subject line*

Nothing too exciting going on. I've been pretty busy this week, obviously, reading and doing homework and geeking out on CNN coverage of the Democratic convention. Watched Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama's speech (not to mention Jesse Jackson, Jr, who impressed me).

The McCain choice of Palin is really bizarre, especially considering he's only talked to her once before. But it's a risky move - it could pay off and help him swing the election, but I really don't think it will. In fact, I think it's a pretty terrible move. He's not going to get enough Hillary voters to make it count (a lot of them, in fact, seem to be offended at his implication that they just wanted a woman), and the Obama campaign is absolutely going to skewer this woman after McCain's spent the entire campaign discrediting Obama for "lack of experience." I think a lot of voters will be scared that a first-term governor of one of the two "satellite" states who two years ago was the mayor of a town of 9,000... might be a heartbeat away from the presidency (with McCain's age, that risk only increases). While the VP debates may be ridiculously scripted, as they seem to be on occasion, I still think Biden will skewer her. McCain took his maverick reputation and put it on the line: he's risking becoming, as Bob Casey put it, a "sidekick." I think, ultimately, this move just handed the election to Obama for sure, but I thought McCain was going to lose anyways, and perhaps this speaks to his desperation. But I could be wrong. We'll see.

I want to keep track of the books I've read this year so here goes. If you're interested click the cut, if not just glaze over this. I'll edit this as I remember more, and I'll either come back and add to this list or copy/paste later.

So. Not a lot been going on recently. I've been reading a lot of fic and such, and trying to write some, but it's been slow going.

Michael Phelps is amazing. Of course. Obligatory Phelps gooiness and such here.

I need to post the next chapter of ADitL tonight. The X-Men fic is almost done, thank God.

And I'm out.

Before I start squealing about The Dark Knight: Has anyone on my f-list read Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman? I read it last week all in one sitting and wow! For comic book fans, it's a must-read. A spoof of the comic book genre, but still a great book. One of the reviews on the inside compared it to Chabon with comics and after that I had to buy it. One of the two narrators is Dr. Impossible, a Lex Luthor type, and he's one of my new favorite characters. So. READ IT. I want that fandom to exist!

Annnnnnnnnd...

I SAW THE DARK KNIGHT LAST NIGHT! We got there and our pre-ordered tickets weren't working so we went to Guest Service and they couldn't find them so we got irritated and just snuck in. Then, after the previews, my friend (the one who bought the tickets) goes, "Oh... I think I bought tickets at another theater," and we all proceeded to call him various names.

But ZOMG! The movie!

Cut for spoilers. )

That was a really freaking long post. But now there's a repeat of the Pysch season premiere, so I'm off! And bonus points to anyone that understands my subject title without Googling it.

A Day in the Life has been updated with Chapter 17. That's not all, though. While reorganizing my files, I found the ORIGINAL Day in the Life draft. This was written somewhere between March and May of 2006 - about a year before I started work on A Day in the Life - and it was a Barty AU fic with no magic, just like ADITL. However, it was markedly different. I only got about halfway through the first chapter, but I thought it was interesting reading it. So naturally, I'm going to post it here with commentary!

I now present you with the rough draft of the unwritten story: Everything's Not Lost. )

Obviously I like song titles for fic titles.

Okay, so I've been listening to VLV for the past three days (and, in addition, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief by Radiohead, both of which I recently obtained), but VLV is definitely the best of the three so far. I really hate to say this so soon, but I think it might be Coldplay's best album. It doesn't have a weak song, unlike their previous three. Violet Hill is a song I've never been a huge fan of, but it's still very listenable. Parachutes was an extremely solid album, and A Rush of Blood to the Head had spectacular songs, while X&Y expanded their musical pallete - VLV is a perfect combination of the three. This feels like the album I have been WAITING for Coldplay to make.

And it's such an uplifting album! I mean, it's got its moments of haunted beauty, but it never seems like everything's gone to hell - on Parachutes, We Never Change, and Sparks, on AROBTTH, Warning Sign and The Scientist, on X&Y, The Hardest Part and Swallowed by the Sea. VLV's songs are just as gorgeous and with their moments of pessimism, but as a whole it feels like a much more optimistic album. I think the best way to sum it up is a line from Strawberry Swing - "It's such a perfect day."

Eno and Dravs did wonders producing this. It sounds like U2 and Arcade Fire, obviously, but better. Buckman has really gone all Edge on this, not that I'm complaining. X&Y, I thought, suffered from really sketchy production - songs like Low, White Shadows, and What If were bogged down with this just soggy synthesized sound that really didn't work. The Hardest Part had the same kind of production, but it overcame it. What made it so frustrating was that X&Y, Twisted Logic, Fix You - the production on those was perfect! This album is much more consistent, and much more beautiful than anything they've ever done.

I'm so happy right now. Thank God for Coldplay. Radiohead did their bit with In Rainbows, and now Coldplay's done theirs with VLV. Focus is on you, Oasis! That album this fall better be damn good to live up to my expectations now!

God, Kevin Garnett is out of his mind. But it was great seeing him screaming "Anything is possible!" and then breaking down into tears during the postgame interview. And then hugging Bill Russell and muttering, "I got my own! I got my own!" And then when the trophy was being passed - "I got it!"

Ahhhhh KG's a nut. But I'm really happy that he and Ray Allen and Paul Pierce got a ring.

In other news, a new plot bunny has stricken me. Stupid mind. Stop playing with the idea of Harry as a superhero!

Okay, I just wrote a ton tonight and finished up Chapter 11 of You Can Call Me Tommy, so that's been posted. A different chapter - kind of depressing humor (thank you Joseph Heller & Jonathan Franzen) - but I like it, very narration-heavy. So.

Huge choke job by the Lakers tonight. Not that I'm complaining. I think the Celts'll close it out in Game 6, I just don't think they can win two back-to-back in LA.
