[Current Music |someone still loves you boris yeltsin - the beach song]

hey, remember when i updated this thing? yeah, i didn't think so.
i guess i don't think there's anything exciting going on; but i guess it has been. sometimes i feel like it's been this summer of me being invisible or ignored or just in hiding. or more likely all three.

i guess stuff has been happening. i went to arkansas. did arkansas things.
i've been to a few river concerts here in st. mary's. been up to dc a few times, seen some friends. [info]asilverkey showed me the memorial to the silver spring town drunk. i can only aspire to that. after that, we went to show at black cat. it was fun. monotronix was what i really remember. just ... like ... wow. energetic is an understatement. showered with beer drunk from someone's trainers is more like it. another band, forgot which, the singer hung from the rafters. i really wanted to see matt&kim, but i had to catch the metro, so phooey.
saturday is tilly and the wall with maybe some of those same offenders?
[info]nodgerkith and i had tea and scones in leonardtown. i <3 tea and scones.

mostly, i've been putting things into boxes. the movers come tuesday, and then i'll pick mum up at national and they'll meet us in gettysburg that evening. i am excited about more money and higher cost of living, but i am sad to be leaving the students here. i really enjoyed my classes. probably too much. it's been a nice year, but move on time is here. sigh.

i am looking forward to next year, though. my colleagues were all very cool. and i'm going to love living downtown and being able to walk places. i'm getting a smaller flat, getting rid of a lot of things. just trying to take up less space, i guess.

i'm trying to convince mum to go to nyc with me while she's up.

also, how insane would i be if i decided to go to germany for a few days in january? i want to go to worms and speyer. (ranking: 1= dali's not crazy 10= turn's out, dali's not crazy).

[Current Mood | frustrated]

i made it back, injuries and all, but am not settling in very well. i cannot get readjusted to this time (maybe now, though...i slept about 15 hours last evening/night) and everything feels really out of place. maybe it's because there really aren't that many people here over the summer, but nothing feels right. my place is all unfamilair/strange, and i still need to pack it up.

i had a good time. i wish i could say i was glad to be back, but i'm just not. i need to find someway to stay in europe for a while. sigh.

i may tell the stories, i may post the pictures. we'll just have to see how i feel.

kick through continents, busting boundaries [Jun. 4th, 2008|05:32 pm]
[Current Location |budapest]
[Current Mood | sad]

despite the injuries, broken time pieces, suitcases and two pairs of shoes, i do not want to go home tomorrow. i know i post this like once a summer, but still....i guess ill just have to come back next summer, stay for even onger and then whine about having to come back. again.
but i do not want to have to pack up my apartment. if anyone likes putting things into boxes, please let me know. i would appreciate your help and you will be rewarded. ia m sure theres some kind of (freudian or nonfreudian) karma for box packing ...

it was rining this morning and i walked around roman ruins, thinking about hubris and the ends to which we all someday come...piles of wet rocks and memories. dirt and excavations. imaginations and assumptions.
i also saw a roman organ (well, two actually...one musical instrument and one other kind of organ) and a temple of mithras.

i have really enjoyed budapest. it is a lovely city and the food is amazing.ű
i think i will have to come back someday...

i'm still trying to piece together what i think of berlin now. melding my memories with what's here. i like it, but it is different...

we've hit the ground running sort of. actually met up with R&J at FRA without a hitch, packed up our belongings and headed to Trier, whcih was just as niuce as i remembered, even though i didn't drink as much wine this time round. hit Marburg, which really is a lovely old town in the midst of Pfingstäge, so everything was closed.
Today climbed up the Wartburg and learned all about Martin Luther and Ludwig der Springer. In Erfurt now, very much Ostdeutshcland. Looks like a good place, though. Steadily pressing on...Berlin this weekemnd...won't drive out the way we drove in, that's fer sure.

Tschüß!

he once rolled 4000 km across india.
we watched a video on him in class. rather than writw a paragraph, worth 10 points, some of my students (jess, paul, and rachel) decided to emulate him. they were joined by tony from another class. and they rolled all the way across campus. actually, jess started to roll, sat up, and said, 'i'm writing a paragraph!'
like a rolling stone )
the afternoon ended with my students pushing me off the dock into the river.
if you can think of a better way to learn about hindu asceticism, i'd like to hear it.

i also have an on-campus at gettysburg on wednesday; help me st. christina the astonishing.

[Current Mood | hot (and confused)]
[Current Music |nena - mondsong]

so that job i interviewed with in iowa, right? that i've never heard back from?
it just reposted today as a one-year visiting job. which means, i assume, 1) they found no-one they liked or 2) funding got mucked up or 3) academia is beyond fucked up 4) all of the above
either way, i would have appreciated a letter or something. you know, just to keep the rejection thing going full tilt.
i don't understand the way these things work at all. i am seriously considering running off to europe for a while and living by my wits in alley. or teaching english. or drinking. i assume i could combine that third with the other two.
