i've watched you with my one green eye
ffffound: house, m.d. i'm not a particular fan of house, but even if you've just seen a few episodes i think this should be funny. or maybe i'm weird. *** advanced style is the facehunter/whatever of the senior citizen set. *** shop assistants news on idolator! *** i can't remember the last time i took so long between posts. i've been feeling busy, though i don't think i've really been doing any more than usual. (though it has been kind of a long time since i've felt bored even for a fairly short while, which is weird and maybe slightly bad.) and a lot of my livejournal friends don't post as often as they once did (for various valid reasons, but it still has an effect.) anyway, hmm, things that have happened. bought some lovely tiny earrings off etsy. saw yellow fever. slept an insane amount this weekend. ate pupusas. *** p.s. national debt clock maxes out. |

well
as some of you may have heard, i didn't realize until last night that when the douchebags broke into my car saturday they took my knitting bag and my 3/4-done forecast with them. i feel like i'm almost not allowed to complain since i was neglecting it as a project, but i'd picked it back up recently and it's not like i didn't want it. (it's also not like i didn't want the sweet dear birthday bag it was in, either.) i don't know how/when i'll have enough of one kind of yarn to make a sweater again, but i want to. so i'm actively soliciting ideas for a new first sweater to knit. i like this sweater, whose pattern should be getting published before too long. i like this version of wenlan chia's convertible cardigan (ravelry link, so you won't be able to see it if you're not a member, sadly). or maybe it should be an elizabeth zimmermann pattern or something, i dunno. |

ramblings on a question
i think i might finally get an ipod sometime soon. not this month, because i had to pay for a car window already, but maybe christmas at the latest. yeah, i haven't had an ipod up to now. keep in mind that i've only had my own computer for a couple of years. yeah, also weird. but anyway. this has lead to all sorts of thoughts about music, owning music, the importance or lack thereof of having a physical thing like an lp or a cd, all that sort of thing. things keep serving to remind me - two separate friends talking about getting rid of all their cds, the fact that i got a whole bunch of cds stolen the other day, etc. i'm not 100% wedded to the idea of owning the physical artifact, but i'm pretty sure i don't want to have a completely electronic collection of music either. i think if i get an ipod i'll start to have more and more music in electronic form only, and i'm okay with that. but i want to have some overarching rationale i'm trying to adhere to somehow rather than just going with the flow. if i only buy cds (i don't listen to records much and don't even have my turntable set up at the moment), i will almost certainly listen to less music. what i do have can easily get neglected. but even if i can't always tell a difference, there is something about the idea of constantly listening to compressed files that gets me down. they're not the same as a .wav file, much less an analog recording. a lot of you reading this, friendslist people or otherwise, have been dealing with this question longer and/or in a more in-depth, complicated way than me. quite possibly there are facets to this that i haven't thought of. so i'd like to know - what do you think? how do you handle this? |

just saying
this photo from hedi slimane's photo diary* reminds me of cute skater boys of my adolescence, but mostly it reminds me of justine frischmann. * includes some good photos, but you have to see past a little too much kate moss and a few odd photos of tommy hilfiger (i think that's him, anyway). |

if you wanna try, there's no worse you could do
john hodgman to appear on bsg. cameos are always at least kinda neat, but i think hodgman could be pretty great. *** io9 on timecrimes. i saw a bunch of nacho vigalondo's short film work at fantastic fest this past weekend and i'm really glad i did - he's goofy and iconoclastic enough to be very endearing, but he can back that up with good if occasionally amateurish filmmaking. *** man, i would like to hear jarvis cocker lecture about songwriting. *** this typophile thread speculates about possible ligatures for wtf and lol. for those who may not already know, ligatures are characters that combine letters, which can mean something like a special character that replaces the letters fl so that they don't bump against each other in an ugly way, or it can mean something like the @ symbol (combining a and t - that's the sort of thing they're discussing here). of course, when it comes to the connecting-letters sort of ligature, baskerville digital revival mrs. eaves is the undisputed champ. though if a more ligature-y typeface exists, i actively want to know. *** p.s. speak up on bell centennial. i have always loved bell centennial, aka the phonebook typeface. also a big inspiration for the rightfully well-hyped display face amplitude. |

i just can't help myself
something just reminded me that a couple of weeks ago a red river homeless dude told me not to lose or gain any weight, because i was "just right." thanks? *** i like the abc button. it's nine-hole button that you can stitch rudimentary letters into. i wonder if they're a little less functional, though - you need a little give in a button. *** weekend highlights included short films, the new year (really good but woefully underattended, especially for texas), my regular dose of dancing at d & c's house, several nice meals, and a ton of chatting. and some laundry. i was going to try and start on the wire finally as laundry viewing, but the one first season disc vulcan didn't have was the very first one. so i got jon to watch state of play with me. *** okay, i haven't actually read this michael chabon piece on obama all the way through yet, but i'm pretty sure it's good. via how you gonna keep 'em down. *** cutest sticky-tabs ever. *** acl is happening this weekend. don't let me forget and try to go to barton springs or something. i wish there were some aftershows i wanted to attend, but so far i'm not thrilled with anything. i would have liked to see m. ward, but his only non-acl show is opening for conor oberst and that doesn't sound worth it. |

make it easy and i'll hold it against you
tastespotting is interesting - you see a bunch of photos from different recipes and blog entries about food, and you can click on what looks interesting. though a few pages' worth of clicks got me to an entry that used the word "nomsworthy" - not a neologism that i enjoy. let's just leave the nom in nom nom nom, shall we? *** apparently myspace thinks i'm a "big beautiful woman" and facebook believes i'm interested in interracial dating. *eta: and that i may have a gambling problem. have i been playing too much scramble? *** david simon and tom fontana will be working together again, i guess for the first time since homicide, on a project about the manhunt for abraham lincoln's killer. i'm guessing it was a lot more interesting than i'm imagining. anyway, yay! *** tattoo touchup update: itchy stage. *** hmm, weekend. so far there's a possible housewarming, a slip & slide bbq, the new year are playing though i haven't made up my mind about that, and hopefully a few other things may happen. *** p.s. you may have seen the washington post chart illustrating mccain & obama's tax plans in comparison. but this version includes row height adjusted to reflect the population of each group. not a surprise, but a good illustration. |

i always think there must be places to get good, well-fitting menswear-type clothes for women. you see people wearing that stuff but you never see it on sale, or at least i don't. well, i'm probably never going to get within five miles of their price bracket, but boy, band of outsiders' women's line, includes some stuff that fits that bill. ***
the vintage shirt i ordered off etsy came yesterday and i'm wearing it to work today. i really love it, but it is b-r-i-g-h-t. *** i was going to try and go to a house show tonight, but i'm not sure i have the energy to be social. |

last attack on this delicate illusion
so, i accidentally stayed up a bit late. but that twenty minutes of driving around listening to sebadoh was totally worth it. |

the pink flag was screaming
today's inspiration features george albertus. i really like this stuff. *** russell davies would like russell tovey for the eleventh doctor. i've got a soft spot for tovey - he was particularly good in an episode of ashes to ashes as well as the last doctor who christmas special. and then there's being human, which i really liked (and i mainly liked the russell tovey bits). (credit to mostlikely2 for showing it to me.) *** i guess nobody's made a boot quite that way before. *** ffffound: "it's time!" *** i was all psyched up for it to get cooler, and now it is and it's great but a little weird. every autumn i become slightly irrationally nervous, like my inner caveman wants to save up a bunch of food and find a good cave. of course this is extra absurd when it seems cool to you because the highs are in the eighties (lows in the sixties), but that's the sort of retarded personal thermostat you wind up with after a texas summer. *** got a very thorough touchup on the mermaid tattoo last night from the lovely brandi. should be perfect in a couple of weeks. i feel a bit wimpy about my sore arm today, but in general i find the whole healing process kind of interesting so i'm focusing on that. another thing about the weather getting cooler is that i'll be putting that little lady away a lot more starting pretty soon. she'll get a tail poke-out here and there, but that's about it. *** p.s. after almost getting japanese food sunday and then talking about it, and then getting suddenly hungry last night while watching anthony bourdain in osaka, i need to get some kind of japanese food sometime soon. |

here we fucking go
somebody made a vinyl toy version of jeffrey brown's change bots.***
susan passed some old photos on to me today and i scanned a few of them. here's my grandpa preparing to shave. wow, i still miss him a lot. *** interesting piece in the boston globe about neologisms. i'm not sure i agree 100% with the "if it works like a word, just use it" argument (though i certainly do that a lot myself in informal writing and speaking), but i can see the sense of it and it does seem to be the way the world is going. *** gah, it's friday afternoon and my head hurts a little, but i actually have a good bit of work left to do. *** p.s. i like the hat in the ad in this blog entry. and i'm pretty sure i could make something similar pretty easily. p.p.s. chunky yarn reminds me - i just figured out (way after it happened) that rowan discontinued big wool tuft. i love big wool tuft. when i found out i nearly bought a whole bag of it, but then that seemed a bit overly spendy. though i think i'll probably snap some up soon anyway, even if it's not a whole bag. |

praise the grammar police
more correct than you, a nice entry from john e. mcintyre's copyediting blog. *** i checked the weather this morning - sometimes i use even slight increases and decreases in temperature to justify decisions about what to wear - and apparently they're expecting ike to head right this way. this means that saturday "heavy rain/wind" and a high of 82 is forecast. hardly cold, but almost twenty degrees lower than what's been normal lately. anyway, yikes. *** i had a small lunch and i'm getting hungry again. that's all i've got for you guys today. |

they always get it in the end
best birthday wishes to unicorncandy. *** design*sponge has a nice little entry about a kithaus built in williamsburg. let my fantasies of spartan living in a tiny prefab home begin. especially the k1 version. *** edward mcgowan does some nice artwork. *** flea markets in central and south texas are really awesome - roasted corn (and turkey legs for the meat-inclined), all kinds of crazy goods and services you may not have known existed, tiny cowboy boots, those lamps that create the illusion of running water, the sort of religious icons that are actually rather inspiring despite their kitschiness, loud tejano music, etc. etc. but sometimes i'm a bit jealous of people who live in places with more standard flea markets. europe especially - the one i visited in dusseldorf years ago was overwhelming but pretty fantastic. *** i kind of love this coat. it looks like a bedspread in the best possible way. *** i've never bought a knitting pattern online before (weird, i know), but i might for this hat. |

going to bed links
vaguely awesome crocheted thingie.*** so, it doesn't take much effort to notice the trendiness of abstract tattoos. i'm sure there may be reference points i'm not aware of, but at any rate you can't spit in a hipster-ridden spot in my town (e.g. el chilito) without hitting some kid with three black rings around his arm or something similar. if there have to be trends, then i may as well be mildly happy about this - in some ways the thing i hate most about bad tattoo culture is the overemphasis upon and misplaced importance of a certain kind of heavy-handed and overly literal symbolism. sure, let's go all the way to the other end of the spectrum and avoid even having a picture of something. ignoring the taint of cheesiness from the vaguely sleazy tacoheads in question (and that does take a fair amount of effort to ignore), i'm all for it. with that in mind, despite my firm atheism and suspiciousness toward the selby, i do like this cross. it's just a nice little piece of composition. |

that isn't what i meant to say at all
every time i see a photo of beck lately i feel like he looks very slightly wrong. i think i finally realized today what the problem is - now he looks like a vapid, slightly too-pretty version of michael cera to me. i was going to say older, but he doesn't really look that much older. which may also explain why he looks slightly wrong. that and the glassy-eyed look of scientology. *** ffffound: stanley kubrick was cute. i don't think i've ever seen a photo of a young kubrick before. *** current food cravings: tofu satay! maiko mac & cheese (again)! now if i could only think of something appealing that would actually be practical for today's lunch. *** neal stephenson's coming to austin september 25th. |
