I'm a Doctor Who fan since birth, more or less. I stuck through the show through thick and thin, with a special affection for the Jon Pertwee era and the U.N.I.T. stories. Captain Yates was my first crush. And Pertwee was my favourite Doctor for a very long time, until the Sylvester McCoy Doctor and Ace combination came along, together with that final couple of seasons of intelligent, challenging, mysterious stories that made you think... and made compulsive videoing and rewatching a necessity again.
I own every episode of the show still officially known to be in existence, in some shape or form. It took me a while to make up my mind about the new version, but it sold itself to me fully the moment David Tennant became the Doctor. I'll miss him. And I'll still be watching without him.
With Doctor Who on hiatus for 16 years I had to turn my fannish interests elsewhere. Having discovered comics as an adult I fell in love with a goodly part of the DC universe, particularly the team books like the Titans and the Legion of Super-Heroes, dabbled briefly with letterhacking in the days when comics still had letters pages, and then moved on to APAs, where most of the fanfic I've ever written saw the light of day.
While keeping a toe in that pond I turned back to television fandom when it was love at first sight upon seeing the pilot episode of Voyager. (And indeed the ship's pilot, one Tom Paris.) The first three years of that show are my favourite, the last couple make me somewhat bitter. Being a glutton for punishment I then took another look at The X-Files, where the morally ambiguous Alex Krycek satisfied my need for Heroes with Darker Urges, and Villains with occasional Heroic Impulses.
My UK show love currently revolves around Doctor Who (plus spin-offs) and Primeval in all its batshit-insane dinosaur SFX glory. After dropping out for a bit, I'm back on board with both Supernatural and Lost and expect to watch them through to their respective conclusions. Reading involves trying to make some headway on my to-be-read pile which encompasses several shelves right now (and isn't helped by my bad habit of splurging on reprints and/or first edition hardbacks of various childrens novelists I remember fondly from my youth), and periodic dipping into the Harry Potter universe. Oh, and I seem to have rediscovered the Chronicles of Narnia, for which the movie of Prince Caspian is largely to blame. Writing is still in the "eh, not managing much right now" phase, though I think that to some extent I managed to claw free of several years worth of writer's block by dabbling in roleplaying for a while, as Andromeda Tonks (
andromedanoir) and a horde of others. I'm slow though, and find it difficult playing in other people's sandboxes, so don't write a lot of fanfic.
