Summary:cut and paste question for my stories
Original Request:
Hello,

I tried to find this under the general questions but didn't have much luck. I just want to know how to take a story from a folder on my desktop and post it into an entry. I tried to cut and paste but was unable to get the paste option when I opened an entry.

Please advice.

Thank you,

Thank you for your report. So we can investigate this problem, what type of file are you attempting to copy from? If it is a Word document, what version of Word are you using?

Thank you for your report, and I apologize for the delay in responding to your request. We believe there may be an issue being caused by specific material within the text source you are attempting to copy from. If you have saved a copy of a document you are unable to copy/paste to LiveJournal's update page, please save a copy of the document and send the file to markf@livejournal.com so we can identify what is interfering with our update page and correct the problem.

Thank you, I've received the document you sent. There are 2 different issues occurring. The first is that when you copy text from Word 2007, the update page does not recognize that you have text to paste from the right-click menu. You can, however, still paste using the keyboard shortcut for this (ctrl v). I cannot, however, reproduce it when testing on newer versions of Word (MacWord 2011).

Additionally, the length of the story you have written will not be allowed with the formatting you have included due to file size. When you paste text from a Rich Text source such as Word to the Rich Text version of the update page, it will create its own HTML to try and reproduce the same formatting effects. This can greatly increase the file size of an entry, and LiveJournal limits entries to a file size of 65k, as noted at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=165. In this case, the formatting is pushing the total size of your story over this limit, resulting in "Error updating journal: Client error: Post too large." You will need to split this into two entries in order to post it successfully, or paste into the HTML tab of the update page which will remove formatting options such as bolding text, center aligning text, etc.

We are in the process of beta testing a new update page, and would like to ask for your help testing it, since you've had a problem with the previous update page.

If you are still using Word 2007 to compose your entries, please switch to the new update page at [http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml], by clicking on the 'switch to new version' link near the top of the page. Since this is a beta test, you will be able to switch back to the old version later, if you like.

After you've switched to the new update page, please try copying text from Word 2007, and pasting it into the entry field by right clicking and selecting 'paste' from the menu. Then, let us know if you are able to use the right click menu to paste your text, or if you still need to use the ctrl-v shortcut to paste your text.
