How do I play or transcribe a voice post?

Most voice posts display with a Flash player that allows you to play the voice post directly in the entry. However, you can also click the "VoicePost" link to download the file and play it with your computer's software. Additionally, the "Transcribe" link allows authorized users to post a written transcription.

Listening to Voice Posts

Voice posts are encoded as either MP3, WAV, and Ogg Vorbis files, depending on the journal's settings. MP3 voice posts will display using an in-line Flash player, while others need to be downloaded to your computer in order to be played.

Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format, comparable to other formats such as MP3. Ogg is different from the others, however, because it is an open specification, is free to use by any person or business, and is not encumbered by any patent. You may need to get new music software or change your current software to play Ogg Vorbis voice posts, or use third-party extensions for programs without Ogg Vorbis support.

Transcribing Voice Posts

Public voice posts shorter than three minutes will automatically be transcribed by SpinVox, depending on the journal owner's preferences. Any uncertainties in the transcription will be denoted by a '(?)'. If SpinVox is unable to transcribe the voice post due to the audio quality or background noise, or if you wish to make changes to the automatic transcription, you can transcribe your voice post manually.

Authorized users can only transcribe a voice post once. Once you transcribe your own voice post, no other transcriptions can be added. Additionally, there is a limit of 10 transcriptions for each voice post: nine for other users and the last for you. After the tenth transcription, new ones will replace the one previously saved as the tenth.

The most recent transcription will appear in the voice post journal entry. Transcriptions do not allow HTML, and are limited to 4096 characters. You can see a history of transcriptions by clicking the "Transcribed" link at the bottom of a voicepost.
