Frequently Asked Question #268. How do I embed videos, maps, and other media into my entries, comments, or profile?

Embedding videos into your journal can be done in several ways, and how to do it will vary slightly depending on where you want to add them.
  • Entries: Click the "Embed Media" button and enter the embed code provided by the other site. If you are using the HTML editor, you can also add the code using <lj-embed>[embed code]</lj-embed>, replacing [embed code] with the embed code provided by the hosting site.

  • Comments: If you are viewing the default commenting scheme, click the link to "Insert Video" and paste the URL of the video into the field which appears. If you are using customized comment pages, you will need to manually add the embed code using <lj-embed>[embed code]</lj-embed>, replacing [embed code] with the embed code provided by the hosting site.

  • Profile: On the Edit Profile page, you can add the embed code to the Bio section by using <lj-embed>[embed code]</lj-embed>, replacing [embed code] with the embed code provided by the hosting site.

You can also embed maps into your profile, comments, or entries (only in the HTML editor) by using the code <lj-map url="[map link]">.

Your media will not be embedded until the entry or comment is posted; it will not display correctly when previewing the entry or comment.

Please note that when the entry or comment is posted, an embedded object automatically gets an id number (in HTML, it looks like <lj-embed id="NN">). When editing the code of the embedded object, you should delete "id=NN" from its code. In other case, your editing will be ignored.
