About LiveJournal

What is LiveJournal?

LiveJournal is an online community, a social network, and a place for self-expression. We strive to create an environment where you can connect with others, share your thoughts, and be yourself. Our core values guide us to protect and cultivate that community.

Core Values

We believe in self-expression, and we provide tools that you can use to communicate with others in immediate and in creative ways. We believe in letting you create your own content and to choose how to express yourself, your thoughts, and your feelings.

We believe in diversity, and we welcome and respect different opinions, different cultures, and different perspectives. LiveJournal brings people of various backgrounds together. We strongly support freedom of expression, and we're committed to helping you share your diversity with others.

We believe in creativity, and we encourage you to use the features that LiveJournal offers to share the process of creating content with your friends. Whether it's in the form of writing, making userpics, or designing layouts, everyone has something to offer. We want to make it easy for you to share that with the world.

We believe in community, and we know that LiveJournal thrives because of its loyal users. We're committed to incorporating your feedback into our product and technical decisions. We partner and collaborate with the community in order to improve the service for everyone -- from the novice to the expert, and everyone in between.

We believe in privacy, and we make sure to safeguard your innermost thoughts. We provide you with the tools to choose who to share your content with, and we respect the decisions you make. We let you decide how you want to protect your privacy, and we work to build a service that you trust.

Our Technical Goals

Maintain Reliable Uptime
We are constantly working to improve our server infrastructure in order to minimize interruptions. We try to keep the site running as smoothly as possible, but unfortunately we may experience problems from time to time. We will work to avoid these problems, and we will announce any planned downtime in advance.
Honor Every Account
We intend to honor the status of every account, as follows: Permanent accounts will be honored for the life of the service. Paid Accounts will remain as paid accounts until they expire. Early Adopters are granted access to the paid features that were freely available in the early history of the site. (Account status valid with the exception of account termination as a result of Terms of Service violations.)
Avoid Unwanted Email
We strongly believe that spam has no place on the Internet, and we will not send you email without your implied or explicit consent. We will send you an email on certain actions associated with your account (such as creating an account, receiving a gift, or filing a support request). For other notification emails, we will give you an option to opt out of receiving such messages in the future.
Support Free Software
We contribute regularly to the Open Source community -- LiveJournal and its infrastructure runs on code that we've developed and shared. We plan to continue to give back to the community by contributing new code, bug fixes, testing, and documentation. We also encourage people to innovate using the code we have contributed.
