looking for clubs
  1. So, I'm thinking of getting involved with club(s) this year and I've looked through the list, but I'm not sure where to find any that would suit me. I am:

    - not religious, not interested in becoming religious
    - white Canadian, and there is no 'People Who Were Born Here and Have No Connection To The Old Country' club (see also: the 'More People Live In My Apartment Building Than the Village I Grew Up In' club)
    - in Linguistics, which used to have a club, but it has disappeared

That seems to rule out most of the clubs, actually. I'd like to get involved in something like Touch of Love (helping homeless people, etc), but they're a spin-off of a religious group and still pretty inter-connected, and I would really like to avoid that. Not my scene.

If you're in an interesting club, leave a comment and tell me about it! Anything off-campus would be cool too, since most of us are commuters.

  2. Does anyone want to start a crocheting/crafting/knitting group with me? We could make toques and scarves, etc, and donate them to homeless shelters or something. Or maybe there's a way to get in touch with local poor families? Those kids need scarves and mittens at recess. We could meet at a pub or something and craft up a storm. We could also look into setting up a table and selling some stuff to raise money for materials. I have patterns and serious crochet skills, I'm willing to teach you!

I'm not a very experienced knitter or crocheter (all I can knit/crochet is scarves so far), but I think that is an awesome idea and I'd love to join!

Well, I find knitting a bit of a pain, never really fell in love with it. But if you're up for crocheting, it's much more portable (TTC-friendly!) and MUCH faster. I could teach you that for sure. :)

The greatest part is the lack of scholarships too!

Yes, the ethnicity-specific scholarships don't even spare me a glance. There is just no love for Canadian-born super-white Dutch people. Of course, then I realise that my life is much easier for it, (semi-?)racist society that it is.

I can see that First Nations people, for example, have a SERIOUS economic disadvantage for the most part, but then I also see that if there don't happen to be any First Nations people applying that year, the money doesn't get given out. It would be nice if those scholarships were more like "if you are First Nations, you will get priority, but if you are white and no one else applies, you are still eligible". I would be content with that.

Well at least you have being female going for you to get a scholarship.

i find most of the scholarships available to me are program/grade specific rather than ethnic specific. I'm Canadian-born-super-white Portuguese, and I can still find bursaries/scholarships to apply to that have nothing to do with my ethnicity. Have you also looked into the service bursary program?

Yeah, I'm all over the Service Bursary program and the Work/Study program. I get a bursary due to my high average, and I usually get some other random one. There aren't any for Linguistics though -- at least, not for a Linguistics student who isn't focusing on Chinese Languages and of Chinese descent or some variation of that.

I just really doubt that all of the scholarships and bursaries are actually given out every year, and I wish that that money were available to people who don't quite fit the criteria if there isn't anyone who does that year.

hmmmm, well... last year i joined VCP's theatre for young audiences which was tons of fun. it was a pretty small group, we met twice a week, and put on two fun plays for a bunch of kids. vanier also does two other plays per year; i'm not sure when they audition. you should check outside the vanier studio theatre (on the second floor) around the beginning of the year.

I like doing background theatre-type stuff, like set painting or running the spotlight, but then I'm wary of the good old "In the theatre world, working a half-day means a 12-hour-shift!" I have a bit of time every week, but not necessarily a huge chunk of time whenever there happens to be a show.

i think some of the other plays are a lot of work, but for the children's theatre stuff i mentioned above we met monday and wednesday from 6-10 (and some people only came one night). i am not an actor either, i did sound for the first play and acted in the second one only after much persuasion, but even then it was just fun because it was a kids' play and i was playing a panda from outer space.

Heeeeey I'm a part of that club too! The "I was born here, I am only Canadian!" Sometimes I feel rather left out, no second language (aside from the french that I never continued taking as I had no room in my schedule for it!) for me.

There was a perfect info fair today that had many clubs but as you said, many were religion oriented and I as well do not strongly affiliate with a religion and would prefer to be in a club with people that do things of similar interests to my own. I would lvoe to learn to crochet scarfs for homeless people!!! If you start anything please post it here and let me know when and where you meet. I would join your club!!!

Yeah, I totally meant to go to that, but then I was an idiot and worked in Bethune all morning and only realised after a stampede of people went through Bethune (free lunch, apparently) that the info fair was only in the morning and that I had just missed it. I thought it was an all-day type of thing. Oh well, maybe some non-religious clubs will start accosting me in the halls.

Suuuuuure! I'm such a knitting freak. For me, especially when I'm stressed it's definitely one of my favourite activities I do. Like once you get the hang of it, it's just so soothing. The best part for me is knitting stuff for other people, people just appreciate handmade stuff so much more than anything.

You're on. Let's do this thing. I have a poster made up and everything, I will just have to tweak it. Maybe you can teach me to actually like knitting (I have made a few scarves), and I'll teach you the unending joy of crochet. :)

I only know the simple things to crocheting so I would appreciate that. The only time I ever crochet is when I put some blankets/afghans together...but I always get my grandma to help me!
