CatCF: Black Oompa-Loompas [29 Sep 2008|06:27am] theidolhands [ mood | full ] [ music | 久石譲, MJ, Janet ] I'd heard about these banned illustrations, but hadn't seen them until I came across this old Japanese publication of the book, thought it might be interesting to others as well. The evolution of this children's book in relation to society implores further consideration in many ways, including this one. Personally, I'm very impressed with how Tim Burton kept this original concept in tact while avoiding an immediate comparison to African-American slaves (the singing and crates being especially provocative in that regard). The first movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Facatory, used the infamous orange/white/green complexions to deliberately avoid potential accusations/objections of racism. Later publications changed the appearance of the workers to be extremely Northern European looking, resembling closer the idea of fairies, Leprechauns or elves. At this point, I'd say they've become a melange of all these concepts but their origin is indicative of history and therefore shouldn't be forgotten. Oompa-Loompa-Doopitty-doo! I've got one!

The Irregulars [03 Sep 2008|08:51am] lefemme I JUST saw something on the Today Show about Roald Dahl, about him being a propaganda writer for the British in WWII, the conversation highlighted the book "The Irregulars". Propaganda writer hmmmmmn? Perhaps our suspicions about other Dahl writings are correct. Since I JUST saw it, there's no video of it on YouTube, but it might be there later. The whole picture... Done by sketching, linearting and CGing... I don't know how long it took, but it felt like a long time! Hm, Willy's coat is very festive, isn't it? Click for Larger View Click for Larger View The story of "Macaroni" is because Willy is wacky, as we all know (only he doesn't think so) and marama_tsg wanted a word that was funny to replace "cheese" and I remembered some teacher I think, doing this. She happily took the idea! Try saying "macaroni" and you'll realize that you have to smile about 3 times to say the word. And we also know how Willy loves to flash those pearly whites. ( mini-story to explain the blushing ) Artist Comments: This is the first time I did an entire piece in only marker. I decided to challenge myself. Freddie Highmore is the star in August Rush currently showing. He's every bit as magical in it, if not more, than Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass features Highmore's voice as the shape-changing ferret daemon named Pantalaimon ("Pan" for short ^_^). Christopher Lee a.k.a. Dr. Wonka, has a role as First High Councilor of the feared and powerful Magistrate. And you'd have to be living under a rock on Mars to have missed the modern media hype that is Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, staring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. I wonder if Deep Roy got a part? Did you realize that he was in The Neverending Story? Anyway, I think it's wonderful to see them all as busy and talented as ever. 14 golden tickets [x] I've got one!
