Join the Vampyre Connexion at Nunhead Cemetery Open Day [May. 13th, 2008|07:16 am]

darckense
Greetings dear childrens of the night.
Join the Vampyre Connexion on Saturday 17th of May for the Nunhead
cemetery open day.

We will meet outside the gate at 11 am for a great goth walk.

Nunhead Cemetery is perhaps the least known, but most attractive, of
the great Victorian Cemeteries of London. Consecrated in 1840, it is
one of the seven great Victorian cemeteries established in a ring
around the outskirts of London. It contains examples of the
magnificent monuments erected in memory of the most eminent citizens
of the day, which contrast sharply with the small, simple headstones
marking common, or public, burials. It's formal avenue of towering
limes and the Gothic gloom of the original Victorian planting gives
way to paths which recall the country lanes of a bygone era.

Nunhead cemetery is on 33 Chalsey Road

SE4 1YN

London

You can easily reach us via train from Victoria and getting off at
Nunhead.

One Eye Grey Walks in London [May. 6th, 2008|04:24 pm]

Hello

I'm involved with One Eye Grey, London's new Penny Dreadful magazine that features magical and ghostly stories about London. Issue 5 is out next week and to celebrate we're running some free walks around London's spookier sections.

Walks are free, issue 5 of One Eye Grey is £2.50 for 7 stories.

Book with penny(at)fandmpublications.co.uk or scott(at)selfs.org.uk
(swapping (at) for @ to make magic email)

Hail Queen RAat

The Heaven & Hell Walk

22nd May
7pm – 8.30pm

Meet outside Farringdon Station

Walk in the footsteps of wizards, mystics, visionaries, quacks, giants, criminals, brawling women, holy warriors and parading bears. See the homes of Nostradamus’s translator, the man who was told off by God at dinner and the man whose interest in the occult was the death of him. See the sites of sacred wells, strange theatre, a midget wedding, an impromptu witch ‘swimming’ and much more….

This walk is almost circular, and lasts 90 minutes from Farringdon station. It ends near a pub.

Troglodyte pigs and syrup of figs

May 23rd
7.00 - 8.30 pm

Herds of feral swine, a well hung Italian, giant dogs, huge rats and the ghost of the pig nosed princess, what’s not to like on this stroll around Blackfriars? Along with the folklore there’s literature, politics and the law and remember that underneath your feet is the Fleet.

Walk lasts ninety minutes starting on the south side of Blackfriars Bridge (opposite Doggets Coat and Badge pub) at 7.00pm

We are doing other walks but these are the quietest so far....

Disappearing ladies, off licences on the sites of ancient temples, birds who charge tolls and one’s that stalk with the pigeon hordes. All this and a couple of nasty trips underground. What more could you want from a Bank Holiday Weekend?

Magic you say? We’ll we’ve got that as well in this edition of One Eye Grey which, in contrast to all the anniversary celebrations connected with Paris sixty eight, remains resolutely London two and eight.

The Esoteric Sources Of Baconian Science [Apr. 14th, 2008|03:03 pm]

The Esoteric Sources Of Baconian Science

& The Controversial Relationship Between Freemasonry & Rosicrucianism

16 April 2008 - 7pm

 Admission £7
Canonbury Tower
Canonbury Place
London N1 2NQ
Telephone
 (20) 7226 6256

James North studied Classics at Magdalen College, Oxford specialising in Greek and Latin literature, and the history of philosophy. He then took an MA at the Warburg Institute, his dissertation focussing on the relationship between magic and the rise of science in 17th-century England. This was the beginning of 12 years of research into Rosicrucianism and Francis Bacon’s science. Although in his working life, James has been a musician, computer programmer, and intelligence analyst he has also lectured widely on many aspects of the history of philosophy and religion. Since 2003 he has been an active member of the Francis Bacon Society: he is the webmaster, and editor of its journal, Baconiana. He believes that Bacon’s vision of science has been misunderstood and is highly relevant in the Information Age. Bacon was a knowledgeable cryptologist, in the tradition of hermetic philosophers such as Trithemius and John Dee. Inspired by his background in computer science, James is studying Baconian Science as a neo-hermetic method for deciphering the Book of Nature. James’ chief interest remains the relationship between religion and science, and he is convinced that many philosophers and scientists now regarded as outdated actually have much to teach us today.

Francis Bacon was an eminent lawyer and statesman, an expert cryptographer, and the chief inaugurator of our scientific age. Was he also an occultist? His writings show him to have been a devout Christian and a sceptical scientist, who warned that mixing faith and science spoils both. But Bacon was deeply interested in the Ancient Wisdom, the powerful science of Egypt that was also known to Moses and the Israelites. His ultimate scientific ambition was to restore the Wisdom of the Ancients, which Bacon believed had been lost. Its retrieval was integral to the eventual creation of a New Atlantis, which was the title of Bacon’s last book, containing his classic utopian outline of an enlightened scientific society. When Francis Bacon’s blueprints for experimental science are reconstructed, an intricate web of symbolism using numbers, letters and emblematic images emerges: a system unlike any described in the classic writings on magic. This talk will demonstrate that Bacon’s use of occult symbolism is rooted in the Bible, especially the Gospel of St John and the Hebrew Prophets. At the same time, it is closely linked to key symbols of the Rosicrucians, and certain Masonic traditions. This talk will outline the fascinating reconstruction that can be made of Bacon’s connection to these spiritual movements, considering the historical evidence for his involvement in an esoteric order, and the controversial relationship between Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism, in the light of these findings

The nearest underground station is Highbury & Islington. Many buses, including numbers 4, 19, 30, 43, 73 and 277 pass through Highbury Corner.

Hell on Earth [Apr. 8th, 2008|06:16 pm]

ian_wyrdness
At the Moot With No Name, tomorrow (Wednesday) night:

Apr 9 - Jeremy Harte - Hell on Earth: Devils in the Mediaeval Landscape

Behind the scenes of mediaeval life, a vicious secret struggle took place between demons and the men of God. Though saints might drive the last devil out from the ruins of the pagan races, the fight went on against the old enemy with the cross raised high on mountains and steeples to carry holy war into the kingdom of the air. But the demons never quite went away, flickering like shadows among the wild spaces of a half-cultivated countryside. A stranger met on the road might turn into almost anything, and even good and evil sometimes seemed confounded. "Is it surprising that we turn vicious?" said the well-dressed young man with one warped boot. "After all, you demonise us." An eerie landscape of marvel and miracle unfolds in Jeremy Harte's talk.

The Moot with No Name meets Alternate Wednesdays, 7.30 for 8pm.
Upstairs, Devereux pub near Temple tube station. £2.

Opposite the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand (near Aldwych) is
a Tudor-style pub, the George. The Devereux is down the alley next to
this.  See map at http://tinyurl.com/cp7u2
