This one's for the commentor a couple of weeks ago who despairingly asked whether ALL vintage ads were oppressive to women. I guess there's always a bright spot somewhere.
Hormel sprung for the full color back cover of the Sept 1942 Better Homes in Gardens. Must have been good money in canned meat. "Cold or hot, Spam hits the spot!" (Crossposting to vintage_recipes)
A licorice ad from 1980. The text in the poster reads "Black Fazer licorice is the best". (It can also be read as "I think that Fazer licorice is best")
The little strongly stylized black boy ( here ) was the logo of a Finnish candy brand from 1927. Only in 2007 it was changed as it was less than politically correct.
So your brother's at war and you're on the rag? Cheer up!
I love that it uses the same selling points as today: you don't have to be on the sidelines, and nobody will know it's there. Except also it throws in that you need to stop sulking, buy some Kotex, and get back out there to work for the war effort. If you don't use Kotex, you're letting your country down!
A case of strange advertising...In case you forgot what animal you were biting into, I suppose.
And a different kind of strange advertising. For...the more esoteric chocolate aficionado. (AKA where's the chocolate? Maybe the horse is chocolate! Mmm horse.)
