a useful search function.
hey fancy mods!

[info]bobbymcr helped me hack this code to be able to search not only one community but also give the option of searching whichever combination of communities you want to search!!! (although it lost the ability to search "everywhere" but that shows up when you go to the results page anyway, so it's a moot point.)

Get your own code -or- Get this hacked code

ok, the following is a sort of tutorial on editing the code for your own community. the fuschia text is the default selected option. there can be only one option that is selected. (the difference here is the selected="selected">vegancooking</option> at the end of that line of code. of course you would change "vegancooking" to your community
the green text is additional selection options for searching a whole bunch of related communities at once, feel free to copy the green text and paste it multiple times to have a multitude of different types of searches. have fun with it. if you have any questions, feel free to ask them.
oh, also the bolded text in the colored sections are the title of the selections. change that to what you want the sections to be named in the pull-down box. it has a 50 character limit before it starts looking real weird.

and please don't change the "get this hacked code" line. that way, folks can come back here and see the tutorial and all that jazz.

and feel free to take the hacked code and use it for your own personal journal. you know, if you have a certain group of friends journals or communities that you'd like to search at once. enjoy it, folks!

This is awesome!! That other search engine never worked well for me. I think it should be moved to the top of the VP info page!

When you select "selected vegan communities," what communities does it search? I just did a couple of test searches on the VP one and it pulled VP post and vegancooking posts. Should veganism be added?

the one i made for vegancooking (the one that is featured here) searches vegancooking, cheapvegan, easyvegan, veganrecipes, vegan_candy, veganfoodpics, vegantestkitchn, veganreadymade, veganpeople, veganism, dailyvegan

but i'm totally open to changing the communities that are searched.
(veganpeoples' "selected vegan communities" are veganpeople, veganism, vegancooking, vegan_talk, vegan_people, starting_vegan. i suppose i should take vegan_people out of the mix, since there are no new entries... this search tool only archives newly made entries, and doesn't archive older entries that were made before it "discovers certain journals" (most of the vegan communities were discovered about a month ago)

the thing with veganpeople's page is that i had to change it to S2 to support tags. :-( it doesn't look as pretty as it used to, and i don't have enough knowledge with html to be able to figure it out on my own.

That's great! That may more people see it and hopefully USE it!

I think that looks like a nice list of veg communities. I'm sure we can add others as they occur to us.

Perhaps you should post to VP to let them know about this wonderful new tool.
