Current mood: curious

this is a democracy. you make the rules.
please let me know what you guys would NOT like to see in this community (click as many boxes that apply)

there are plenty other vegan communities out there. would you prefer the product reviews to go to [info]vegreview would you prefer the non-food related posts to go to [info]veganpeople or another more specific journal? is there a restaurant reviewing journal? if not, would you rather the posts about them go here or in a different journal? let me know and i will carry out your requests.

Poll #276318 you define on and off topic posting
Open to: Friends, detailed results viewable to: Friends

what do you NOT want to see in this community?

someone posting a recipe they liked just out of the blue
1 (0.9%)

product reviews (someone asking you guys what you think is the best)
4 (3.8%)

product reviews (out of the blue suggestions not spurred by someone's curiosity)
9 (8.5%)

restaurant reviews
27 (25.5%)

posts that do not mention cooking or food at all
101 (95.3%)

what shall we do with what you see as off-topic posting?

delete the post
39 (34.2%)

allow it to stay, but warn the poster of it's off-topic-ness
29 (25.4%)

allow it to stay, but warn the poster of it's off-topic-ness and ask for an lj-cut
46 (40.4%)

if there is anything i missed, let me know -supercarrot.

::edit:: if you feel that all of the the above options are on topic, don't click any of the boxes. just click "submit poll" and i'll understand what you meant. (i think that should work, i've never tested it though)
it seems as if leaving a comment is nessecary if you don't mind seeing off-topic posts here... sorry for not leaving a box for that option. i always seem to miss something when i make these things.

"Someone posting a recipe they liked just out of the blue" should definitely be allowed! I mean, this IS a vegan cooking community, so recipes that someone finds and likes should not be banned at all.

:-) ... i just put that option up there to try and get everything in. :-) if you look at the results, nobody clicked on it. i actually never even thought anyone would want that to go away anyway.
(and in trying to be inclusive, i completely missed an obvious option of adding a box including everything *smacks head*)

don't worry. out of the blue recipe postings is gonna stay. :-)

Posting a recipe or asking for recipes is what it's all about for me. I do sometimes wonder if it wouldn't be possible to have a little title-thingy saying "Welcome to the vegan cooking community. Please check our recipe index and vegan FAQ before asking for recipes or information on vegan cooking techniques, as our archive is regularly updated. Please post recipes, product reviews, or lengthy posts behind an lj-cut" or something. I think often people don't even notice the index/FAQ option on the left.

Product reviews relating to cooking are fine by me. If someone's had an experience, good or bad, with an appliance or gadget, it's useful knowledge for the cook.

Restaurant reviews can always be posted to [Unknown LJ tag] or [Unknown LJ tag] or other foody communities, but it's not really about cooking. Entirely non-cooking posts shouldn't be allowed - I know I responded to the Atkins diet thread, but in hindsight it had nothing to do with this community.

I do think that lj-cuts should be used more regularly.

That's my tuppence of change on the subject :)

Well said. I second all of that (with the edited LJ tags hehe). LJ cuts should be used more, and ppl should check the index and faq before asking questions that could EASILY be found there! :)

On days when I'm feeling particularly snarky, I don't even like the posts that are quasi-recipes, like "OMG you guys I just had the best ____! all you do is take ____ and ____, put some _______ on it, and enjoy!" I know it's meant well, but for eff's sake, it's not cooking, and it drives me up the wall. It seems like more of an observation than a recipe and would therefore be better in a personal journal... but then we would have to get into the definition of what is and isn't a recipe and that would be messy.
I'm such a cranky jerk sometimes. And that's why I don't moderate communities, and I thank even-tempered people like you for doing so!

oops, rereading the poll I realize that I clicked the first box thinking specifically about the posts along the lines of "You guys should totally try peanut butter on carrot sticks!" I didn't mean to. cancel my vote!

I don't mind out of the blue RECIPES. I mean if someone tried an amazing recipe and liked it, and posts it, that's one of the reasons I'm here. But I agree that if someone posts, "if you throw pasta and tomato sauce together it's good..." it's a little like, "no shit"...I dunno...I think full recipes are good cuz that's where I get my inspiration.

i am one who does not mind the occasional off-topic post. anythng that has to do with vegan eating seems fine to me. and, if someone were to post about veganism in general this would obviously be a better audience than some other communities. if no one cares than no one has to reply or even read it.
i'd think it a bit anal to delete "off-topic" posts unless they are offensive, or maybe numerous, but everyone here seems pretty mature. i don't even recall seeing anything that made me think, 'why is this in here!!??'

I didn't mind the post about the abortion thing, but I think maybe just making a rule of cutting it with the caption "Off Topic". I realize that many people don't want to read about that kind of thing. (I myself am not in many vegan communities for this reason.) But I don't mind reading about it occasionally.

I see that many people don't want it deleted just cut...I don't think "banning" off topic things is good though either...I tend to never post in those kinds of communities because I'm afraid that I'll somehow be off topic and get reemed....

Don't know if you care or wanted comments about this, but here's my 2cents.

i don't mind any of those posts. i think when there are too many rules about what's allowed people are afraid to post and, worse yet, everyone becomes a monitor and writes nasty comments about how such and such isn't relevant to the community - we don't need another police state! if i'm not interested in something, i don't read it, but it doesn't bother me to have it on the journal. furthermore (and this is happening some now), having a lot of rules leads everyone to prefaces their posts with "i don't know if this is allowed..." etc. and that drives me more crazy than reading an off-topic post!

i am for cut tags for any long recipe.

I'm not sure I agree. There are communities such as [info]veganpeople where anything goes as long as it's related to veganism in some way and is not abusive. But when you have a community devoted to vegan cooking and people just post any old thing, it stops being a vegan cooking community and becomes a community where some people post a few recipes here and there. There's a difference between having boundaries and being ridiculous - it's all in how it's moderated and how sensible contributors are about it.

Personally, I belong to a lot of other vegan communities where those posts are better suited (the posts that would be considered off-topic for this community). I like the concept of this community because it's the only one I know of that is devoted simply to vegan cooking. However, regardless of what the final decision will be, I'm definitely sticking around because of the wonderful recipes that are posted!

i would probably just say for people to post recipes behind a cut...it gets a bit much scrolling through pages of lists of ingredients. having said that, i have never really seen anything that i am like "why is this here??"....

anything related to food should be allowed. or cooking. but not "i hate people who aren't vegan, none of my friends are, boo hoo boo hoo" and junk like that.

although i think recipes/stuff that isn't a short things like "does anyone here have a recipe for bread" should be behind a cut.

so i just wanted to say a little something else.
there has been some discussion about the community developing into some kind of crazy "anarchy" (as in the way the popular media uses the term) if we don't have rules. honestly i don't like rules one bit, but surely if there aren't ANY rules there will be those dopes who can't stick with the obvious intentions of the community 90% of the time.
on behalf of those who have strayed from specific recipe posting;
-i, for one, am no experienced cook and am mostly interested in easy but yummy things i can make. so if someone posts a simple 'this is good with this', i may find it beneficial.
-again, with the more off-topic stuff, like something more generally related to veganism--many people are in one vegan community or another, not all of them. if someone's got a concern, or even just a curiousity and aren't able to find the help they're looking for in one of the other more relevant vegan communities, i would like to know they could come here with it, because in practicality someone here might have the answer they are looking for.
so, myvote is this--
use cut tag for "off-topic" posts, recipes, or anything that is long, and most importantly, just make sure we use the subject line and try to be specific when doing so. we can use things like 'quasi-recipe' for the 'this is good with this' stuff...

There wasn't really n option for the second part that I wanted. I think that the poster should be warned the first time they do it, and the second time it should be deleted.

Forgot to say, but TELL THEM WHY their post was deleted, don't just delete it and say nothing, I find that really rude.
