I believe it was in memory of the Iraqi civilians who have been killed. I think it was very effective. I took a picture too.

Then why are there names of US soldiers written on a few of the crosses?

I believe it is for all war deaths...

The HUB lawn is a public space where there are quite often Bush/Cheney, Kerry/Edwards, and other political signs, Mormon, Christian and other religous booths, as well as many other partisan/religious/whatever happenings. Its totally allowed, and in no way violates church and state. The University is not sponsoring the event, and its taking place on public grounds.

...as long as the artist doesnt say what it stands for and the lets the viewer jump to their own conclusion. I like that sort of stuff when it doesnt come with someone preaching to you about it.

And not to not follow my own advice: It makes me think about ALL the people that have died in this recent conflict. The soldiers that just wanted to do something for his country, the soldier that didnt want to fight, the civilians, and the musliums that felt so strngly they were willing to die for their cause. All of them are now nothing more then memories to the people they loved and that loved them. The question is what would you give your life for? what would you take a life for?

A few years ago my best friend died and that gave me the ability to empithise with all who die by un-natural causes on 'my' side and the other. So sad. But that is life.

Sorry to rant.

They'll probably take it down tonight. I think they're doing something new each day to promote voting.

No one ever says this, but all the "VOTE" propaganda is clearly trying to get Bush out.

I cared more for the display yesterday of 6 or so actual tombstones (not crosses) saying the # of millions of animals slaughtered last year for food.

4 million sheep was the smallest number I believe, and at least one type of animal (cows, I imagine) were in the billions. 12.3 billion turkeys, I think.

But I like how no one cared. People would read them and look dumbfounded, then say "weird" in a really ditzy voice. And then I shot myself in the face.

yeah, because nothing is more likely to make people listen than comparing human murders to the meat industry. Kudos on that tactic, assuming they were going for complete alienations of potential converts.

You cared more about a bunch of animals slaughtered for food, than soldiers/civilians who died in a conflict directly involving the United States? Are you one of those people who says awwwww, when the dog gets killed in a movie, and could care less when a guy gets shot in the face?

People fight in wars. People die in wars.

The moment that we realize wars must sometimes be fought, and that people will inevitably die, we will probably understand this existence a lot better. And please don't tell me about Iraq. I'm talking the bigger picture here. Even if you are opposed to our current war, the mere claim that "because people die, wars are bad," doesn't really fit.

Here's a question to ponder. This sort of demonstration is intended to sway people into thinking that deaths in war prove that wars aren't worth fighting. Tell me, do you think that Middle Eastern citizens sympathetic to Osama bin Laden would heed this demonstration any better than your average anti-war activist here in America? I don't even need to ask.

I don't understand your question.

I don't think death necessarily means war isn't worth fighting, though I do certainly disagree with this particular war. But when we forget, as I think the president did, that the price of war IS death, we are less likely to be cautious about waging it.

We were told this war would be over in a month. I always knew that couldn't be true, because no war is ever over for generations after it is fought (is the Civil War over? Not really), but because this war was supposed to be quick and easy, I don't think our leaders really thought about what the cost in human lives would be. This demonstration doesn't make me think "Is war ever worth it?" but rather, "Is this war worth it?" And that's a question that should be asked every time war is waged, and the answer had damned well better be an unequivocal YES before we go.
