bravenewnick4:07pm: Hello.
I just created this LJ, and was looking to meet some new friends and whatnot in the glbt community here in salt lake, or in utah in general.  I've lived here all my life, and have known about my sexuality for years now, but haven't gotten to get into the community much at all, aside from..say..visiting the pride center or going to the pride festival.
Anywho, feel free to add me if you wish, I'm friendly, I promise.

Just wondering if everyone is still alive and well! haha, this community really needs to get its pulse going....

benni_shamoe10:57am: New Here
Let me just hope that this community is still alive and gets visits once in a while.

I basically have been in utah for one year now, and honestly, it drives me mad. Coming from a big city where there are tall buildings, where the social life doesnt die till 5 am in the morning, and then they day begings at 7 am, cars all over, honking, clubs and bars at eyery corner, and most importantly, the gay scene is big as ever.

I just recently created this account (was referred by a friend), and its been fun, loving every moment of LJ. I live in logan, which basically makes my stay in utah worse, as the gay scene here in logan isnt all that much, and you dont find many guys. Most of them are even moving to SLC. The only way i have met guys here in utah is on sites such as manhunt.net, etc, which really isnt my idea of meeting people, but i was told it is the only way in utah.

I hope to meet some guys here i can make friends with, seeing how empty and quiet logan is.

thesevenwords2:14pm: Wow, its been dead here.
I'm sorta just coming out, so I don't know too much about the gay community in utah, soo.. yeah.
Anyways, I am planning to go to Pride for the first time this year, and can't seem to get much good information on it right now. Does anyone know where/when it is?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I was wondering if anybody could refer me to or tell me about any places that are 'gay friendly' that a high school student could go to to meet other people? Not really looking for a support place, but more of a place to meet new people.
I suppose I could meet some people here too, of course, since this is a glbt community. If anybody cares to ddrop me a line, my email is komradery@gmail.com
Thanks

arc_en_ciel_12:54pm: My best friend and I are traveling to Salt Lake next weekend from Reno, we're driving and I was just curious as to how gay-friendly it is there.. what are good things to do, where are the hang outs? Restaurants, that are good? It doesn't all have to do with gay ness. I was just curious. We are coming for like 4 days and she has a friend she is meeting up with it'd be cool if I did too!

If anyone wants to meet up and show me around, I wouldn't mind so much =]] Just let me knowww

I'm a student at Timpview High School in Provo, and I'm doing a research paper on the legalization of LGBT adoption. I'm looking for an expert in the field that I could conduct an interview with. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be infinitely grateful.

(Or, if anyone can share some interesting studies/reports/whatever concerning my topic, I'd be just as grateful.)

Thank you in advance. :]

b_n_c_310:49pm: seeking pride info
Hey everyone!

My name is Brandon. I'm an 18 year old boi (pre surgery, pre hormones, pre almost everything) originally from Connecticut. I've been living in Utah for almost two years now and I just got an apartment in SLC, but I don't know where to go that's... "gay friendly", if you will. I've gotten shunned a few too many times and I was wondering when pride comes around and whatnot. I'd appreciate any information anyone can give me.

Thanks a bunch!

philbildner8:57am: Phil Bildner's New Gay-Themed Teen Novel, "Playing the Field" (and it's a comedy!)
Hello…

I know I’ve contacted a number of you individually so if you’ve received an e-mail from me directly, or if I’ve contacted you through Myspace I apologize in advance.

I’m trying to get the word out about my new gay-themed, teen novel “Playing the Field” that just came out this week.

I’m reaching out to Gay-Straight Alliances, young adult reading clubs, teen pride groups and other such organizations because I think the novel will be of interest to you. “Playing the Field” is an over the top look at high school life, and the main storylines are focused around the school’s GSA.

Without question, the novel is already rubbing some people the wrong way. Because of the subject matter, some reviewers have refused to review it and some schools have refused to include it in their collections. Whatever.

To be quite honest, the language and sexual content is rather tame (comparatively speaking), but what adult readers are not quite able to grasp is how frank and evolved the characters are.

My intent was never to create the next great piece of teen literature. I wanted to create a fun read with a cool message of tolerance, and I think I did.

“Playing the Field” is available in stores (Borders, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, etc.) and on-line (Amazon and Barnes & Noble). I’ve also included a synopsis of the book below, lifted from the inside flap copy. If you know of anyone who might be interested in the book, please spread the word. In the world of teen novels and young adult literature, nothing beats word of mouth and Myspace!

I’d love to hear from you, and if you hear of others who have read the book, please encourage them to contact me as well. I enjoy the feedback...even negative feedback because that’s when you really know you’ve struck a chord!

Increase the Peace,

Phil Bildner

www.philbildner.com (we’re rebuilding the site right now so some of the links may be a little off)

Playing the Field:

"Insightful, provocative, and laugh-out-loud funny…An inside-out look at high school sports."
--Pete Hautman, National Book Award winner for Godless

"Phil Bildner's screwball comedy sings with wit and originality and a refreshingly frank and funny exploration of bias and discrimination against gays. Like Darcy Miller's magical pitching arm, it sinks a fastball straight into your heart."
-- Tracy Mack, author of Birdland

All Darcy wants is to play on the baseball team, to hear her name announced, "Now batting, Darcy Miller," to play the field. Is that so much to ask?

Unfortunately, it might be. In a few short months, Darcy Miller goes from typical senior in high school to candidate for Jerry Springer. Her mom has started dating Darcy's principal, the very principal whose son Darcy happened to have started a huge flirt-fest with, now brought to a screeching halt. When she decides to let her mom go to bat (so to speak) for her to play on the baseball team, Darcy thinks things are starting to look up. After all, Principal Basset caves and decides to let her play. But he has two conditions that shake up her entire game: She must pretend to be a lesbian (WHAT?) and she must join the GSA, the Gay-Straight Alliance (WHAT? WHAT?), the president of which happens to be her best friend -- make that her ex-best friend, Josh. Okay, Darcy's senior year might seem complicated at first. It's not. It's insurmountably, unforgettably, and -- most of the time -- hilariously complicated.

But if anyone can handle it, it's Darcy. She'll do anything just to play the field.

so, can anyone recommend a good resource for finding gender therapists in the state of utah? i'm currently living with my parents in draper. i have my own car, so transportation is not a BIG issue... however, the closer the better. going downtown is inconvenient at this time, but i can try to manage if it's my only option. preferably i'm looking for someone who is not a licensed social worker. any help is appreciated. though i lived here for years before college, this state is still new to me in many ways...

rikig196910:18pm: I've sent this to several media outlets
This email is going to the management of Megaplex Theatres, SL Metro, Fox 13, Salt Lake Tribune, and Deseret News.

I am appalled that Larry Miller still has not come forward with why he decided, at the last minute, to not show "Brokeback Mountain" at the Megaplex Theatres. Mr. Miller stated on a public radio station the day before that he's not "the community censor." Because of this comment, I think it is very hypocritical of him to refuse to show "Brokeback Mountain", yet show such movies as the gore-fest "Hostel" and the pot-themed "Grandma's Boy". If he would refuse to show those types of movies also, then I wouldn't have such an issue. Focus Features stated that the theatre has not honored their licensing agreement by not showing the movie as originally planned.

Yes, I am a gay man, who lives in Utah, though not LDS. Granted, if he refused to show such movies as "Hostel" and "Grandma's Boy" in addition to "Brokeback Mountain", I would be less inclined to not give Megaplex or and LHM business my gay dollars, but I'm definitely not going to patronize his businesses because of this hypocritical action. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of Utah has called for a boycott of all LHM businesses, which I intend to fully support. However in all honestly, Mr. Miller probably won't even notice the difference. If Mr. Miller doesn't want to come off as a hypocrite, then he should just change the name of his theatres to "Mormon Megaplex" and only show G-rated movies.

7th January 2006

rikig19693:24pm: Brokeback Mountain pulled from Megaplex theatres
One of the local theatre chains in my area (Salt Lake City, UT - Larry H. Miller's Megaplex Theatres) decided at the last minute to not show Brokeback Mountain. The movie was listed yesterday on their website, and even had been selling advance tickets. Larry Miller (who owns a number of businesses around here, including the Utah Jazz and a number of car dealerships; and is Mormon) had stated on a local radio station yesterday that it wasn't his right to impose his moral standards and was going to allow his theatres to show the movie as planned. This morning, at the last minute, he changed his mind. Fox 13 News had a story about this on the 9:00 newscast.

I'm so steamed up about this, I decided to use the theatre's feedback form on their website to tell them how I feel. I'd also love to see the gay community here boycott all of Larry H. Miller's businesses. Larry Miller owns a large number of businesses in the Intermountain West, their main site is http://www.lhm.com/

If you want to tell the theatre how you feel about this, here's the link to their website feedback form:

http://www.megaplextheatres.com/contact.php?action=feedback

While we're at it, let's let the Broadway Theatre know how much we appreciate their support of the movie, and their continued support of the gay community. Fox 13 also said that of all the theatres in the country currently showing Brokeback Mountain, the Broadway came in at #10 nationwide for how much the movie has made there.

The Broadway's website is http://www.saltlakefilmsociety.org/

I have sent messages via the links above to both theatres, and I encourage everyone to do the same. I don't get very politically active very often, but every once in a while, something comes along and really gets me to stand up and do something. This is one of those times.

I've posted this same message on my blogs and my Yahoo group:

kc_risenphoenix7:34am: Can Someone Help Me? GAY NOVEL
I am writing a long involved GAY novel that take place primarily in the Midwest in October...

HOWEVER, an VERY important part takes place some months before... I originally figured about six months before... Crossing the Salt Lake Desert.

For the story, it needs to be hot hot HOT!

It never even occurred to me until last night that it was possible that the Salt Lake Desert might get cold. I crossed it many moons ago and was literally STUNNED by it's heat... And then I get this thought and then I do a little bit of checking and find that in December at least, the Salt Lake Desert is COLD!!

Apparently, since it's at a high elevation and is nestled between two mountain ranges it is cold in the winter!

Who'd a thunk it?

Okay, then!

What months ARE the Salt Lake Desert hot? I need to know soon! The whole story depends upon it. I've written a couple of hundred pages and before it gets anymore f*cked up, I need to make corrections... Obviously, the prolog and its ramifications cannot happen in December. But it doesn't HAVE to be in December. That can be easily fixed. Is the Salt Lake Desert hot in April, May or June?

Thank you!

hey all. just thought i'd introduce myself. i'm originally from north carolina, but my family moved to utah when i was about six. i went to college at loyola university (new orleans) and just graduated with a bachelor's degree this past may. i was living in nola up until hurricane katrina hit; my roommates and i fled, and thus everyone i know is sort of scattered throughout the country. i'm back in utah, living with my parents until i figure out where to go and what to do. since i've been away from utah, i have no idea how the queer scene has progressed. and i definitely don't know anyone. that said, i'm a 22-year-old tranny boy. pre-everything. looking for a trans-specialized therapist somewhere in the state. i'd like to start hormones sometime next year. we'll just have to see.

just wanted to say hey, and i hope to meet a few cool queers in this community. :) much love from the southern boy, and i hope you're all doing well.

subaruskibumvt1:48pm: Hi everyone,

I'm currently a college student at the University of Vermont, but am thinking about spending a simester at Westminster College in SLC this spring for a program that will involve lots and lots of skiing. I've heard various things about being gay and living out there, and was wondering what people who actually live out there have to say about it. I've been reading horror stories online about kids getting kicked out of homes and living on the streets. Is it really as bad as all these internet sites make it out to be? Remember, I'd be coming from Vermont, which is like the most crazy liberal state, so I'm not really used to conservatives running the show...
