Respectful requests for feedback and suggestions from Sister Shotgun!

And may I say, when I said I thought we could figure out what to do here, I never expected such an amazing and effective outpouring. It's been wonderful!

1. Several of us have discussed the need to communicate with Jon Carroll and the Unitarian group (through one of their representatives), to let them know what we are doing, and to emphasize how much the efforts are done out of respect for principles that we share and not (as some could perhaps take it on a cursory look) mockery. Apparently a couple of members (acting exactly as UJ members should!) have already written Jon C. about this community and gotten the reply that he thinks we are cool (ultimate praise in my generation's lexicon of slang!). If you all feel that I should still email him, I'll be glad to (and would like to tell him how his article energized me); of course, anyone who wishes to email him is encouraged to do so (he published his email address with his article so I assume he welcomes such communication). Thoughts?

2. The Unitarian Church. A member (I'm sorry that I don't remember your name--I should warn you all that I have a terrible memory for names, made harder by the tendency in LJ for people to have multiple ones!) linked to the Unitarian web site in a reply. I enjoyed reading through their web site and considered linking on the User Profile, but then realized that perhaps a disclaimer should be made, and that led to the thought that it might be respectful to communicate with them before so doing.

I am willing to do so although am a bit uncertain what to say. I cannot imagine that the article went unnoticed by Unitarians. However, this community may not be on their radar. Do you think I should email them and what, in the main, should be the purpose of the message? I would see on purpose as saying, more or less: "hello, we admire your philosophy and wish to take it into the world in many ways, please let us know if you see any problems with our use of your name."

3. The User Info Page. This page is being continually updated and will continue to be so. If you have suggestions for mottos (especially if you posted in one of the threads), please feel free to link to them in your reply here or state them, and I'll add. Ditto with interests. And related to that issue comes the question of: Resources.

4. People have already begun sharing resources--links, authors, web sites. It dawns on me that one thing I could easily do is put together a Resources Page that pulls together resources (in any media) for members and any others who are interested. I'd backdate and post this page at the "top" of the community and put a link to the page in the User Profile so people will not have to wade through an increasing number of posts/threads. So if you have names, titles, addresses, URL's, etc. that you think would be a useful resource, please send them to me by email or post in response.

5. Cells/branches/affiliates. The [info]uk_cell has been recognized and put under "Affiliate" link on the info page. More cells are welcome (under any name that suits).

I just created [info]sfba_cell for the San Francisco bay area. It's very basic right now, but we'll have a full userinfo page up sometime tomorrow, and hopefully people will join soon. :}

Going through Google, everyone seems to be saying "There is this message sent to Jon Carroll, and you can get your Jihad Name from a name generator".

There is no mention of an active cell been formed in the SF area, or one in the UK, across the Atlantic.

I seriously think it highly appropriate that the community be called the International Council of the Unofficial Unitarian Jihad. I also think that Jon Carrol should be sent another communique stating that we have commenced operations!
I see nothing wrong with your ideas on how to open up with the Unitarian Church.
Some user icons would be neat.
We send fraternal greetings to all, esp. the SF Bay chapter.

I'm not a member of the Unitarian Church, but I'd like to be. I linked to their site. Unfortunately, there isn't a church within 100 miles of me.

I was thinking of joining up and becoming ordained, and starting my own parish, years hence.

Hi,

I'm a Unitarian Universalist. I work for a church in Arkansas as a religious educator. Check out the Church of the Larger Fellowship - a virtual UU church with an ordained minister and ordained religious educator. Their church is in many ways the website at www.uua.org/clf. You know its a church because, if you join, they expect you to make a pledge. Forgive the anonymous but I've got to get to work and I don't have time to create an account.

You know another group that has my utmost respect? The Society of Friends. Some of what they do I don't agree with, lifestyle-wise, but only because it's not for me. They are, however, highly respected in diplomatic circles as impartial mediators, and they get called into international negotiations, etc. They've done so in many situations, including the middle-east peace process.

You have some great suggestions. I especially like the idea of a list of resources. What kind of resources what be listed? Would they be primarily UU? I created a Unitarian Jihad page for my own church's web site to see if it'd generate hits, but it doesn't really look like it's working so far. I thought this movement had become very popular since the article was written and the name generator helped to spread the idea. I don't have as much time as energy as I'd like for this since I do a lot in my local church. Spreading the word about who we are and growing the association in racial and cultural diversity are my top priorities and I thought this might be a tool for that. Any suggestions on that would be appreciated also.

BTW, is there any way to automate a signature here?

as far as I know, there is no ' signature ' function.
i am part of mainstream church in my local area, and they do a lot of work around Amnesty International, Fair Trade, etc.

This, though, is - or has the potential to be - hardcore cutting edge, radical stuff.

May I ask which church you go to? It would be really cool if the official UU came out on our side!

I go to Davies in Maryland - DC area. I'm the web site developer and manager, chair of the Growth and Public Relations Commmittee with an active Growth program (this web page is not yet "official"), long-time liaison to Beacon House (our UU inner-city project), member of the choir who also sings and helps organize the monthly coffee house, member of the Women's Circle and attending the district Women & Religion retreat as the coffee house MC, regular GA attendee and past delegate, webster for the district Growth Plan after serving on a task force, etc. Probably more than you wanted to know.

What would it look like for the "official UU" to come "out on our side"? I don't think they're against us. The way I see it, all members of the UUA are the "official UU" so that would be me. Actions are taken via voting at GA by delegates - if I'm not one, I'm always in direct communication with one, and by representatives that we elect. Opinions are shared via MANY forums and the UU World, which I think contains a fair amount of diversity in opinions. Maybe they'll do an article about this Unitarian Jihad movement.

I see that you host an ecological and human rights issues list at Yahoo. Do you know about Free Cycle? - recycling stuff by giving it away to someone else who wants it. I host one of those and a couple of county lists, too. I'm also a member of MoveOn, Working for Change, and a few others, so I'm crazy to join one more thing!

I work in the UK. Because of the set up in this country being a litle different, I tend to focus more on LJ than Yahoo, butI am into things like Amnesty International and stuff like that.

For the official church to come out on our side, to me , it would mean that the church would at least not hassle us for using the name ' unitarian'.
A statement where they actually say that they agree with us would be wonderful, of course! not that I expect you to deliver on that personally...

Hmm, I put in the wrong link to district Growth Plan and can't figure out how to edit an entry in a group.
