| Help with speech synthesis research? |
[11 Oct 2008|08:38pm] |
I'm looking to recruit a non-smoking, native English-speaking volunteer to be the speaker for my speech synthesis research project. It's somewhat obnoxious work:
step 1: read ~460 sentences into a mic while wearing an E.G.G. on your neck. step 2: come back a second time to read the same sentences while attached to an EVA2 airflow monitoring system (this involves having a tube in one of your nostrils).
It pays $35.00/hour and the ideal person would have some drama, music, or singing training. You need to be able to read all of these sentences clearly, at a regular tempo (I'll provide a silent metronome), and at a relatively level pitch. I expect it to take five to six hours (over 2 or 3 sessions) total to complete the recordings. There's some initial testing I'd have to do to make sure your voice meets the requirements for the research -- and I can't work with you if you've had a head cold in the last two to three weeks.

[11 Oct 2008|11:35am] |
For those of you that like a good haunted house, I highly recommend DarkSyde Acres in Jonesville, MI (about an hour away). There's also Homer Mill, which is where I originally went to, but DarkSyde Acres makes you scream and jump a LOT more.

http://www.thehomermill.com/
Homer Mill is $20 while DarkSyde is $15. However, there are flyers at Homer Mill to get $3 off at DarkSyde Acres.

| Ballot proposals |
[09 Oct 2008|07:37pm] |
I never thought I would miss all of the annoying people on campus who hand out pamphlets and unwanted advice on how to vote while everyone tries to scurry to class. Now I'm living in North Carolina and when I received my absentee ballot I realized that I don't have a clue about any of the proposals and the descriptions on the ballot aren't enough to make a decision on.
So, not to open up the political can of worms, but can someone give me a brief breakdown of the pros/cons of the the medicinal marijuana and stem cell research proposals? Thanks.

| tire repair in evening hours? |
[07 Oct 2008|05:56pm] |
Hey all,
Can anyone recommend a place near downtown where I could get a tire patched or a new one put on my car at night? Will probably be before nine...
I've gotten a tire patched at that gas station/repair place on the corner of Packard and Stadium for really cheap before, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called and thus can't call to see how late they're open. There's also a tire place downtown, I'm pretty sure, but again, I can't remember the name...
Advice on where the price won't be awful would also be cool... It is possible my tire is severely damaged (it looks pretty floppy) and I'll actually have to buy a new one... Alas.
Thanks!

| Ben Folds in Detroit -- Transportation Options? |
[02 Oct 2008|06:12pm] |
Hi all,
Next Thursday, my roommate and I are going to the Ben Folds concert at the Fillmore in Detroit. Neither of us are from Michigan and have no idea how we're going to get there. We've looked into cabs, but the cheapest we could find is a rate around $200 total. We really can't afford that much for transportation, so we were wondering about alternatives.
I'm sure people go to concerts all the time! How would you all suggest getting to Detroit safely and relatively inexpensively?
Any and all help would be appreciated! Thank you!

I could just be really bad at googling things, but yeah, does anyone know?

Please send any questions or resumes to ainman@umich.edu.

So...post your thoughts on the ridiculousness that was the football game!
Seeing as how I was out of town (I'm in Indiana for grad school now), I had to enjoy it vicariously through my friends who were at the game and make do with the flatscreen at a local bar with a couple other alums. Those who were there...you have no idea how jealous I am. That might have topped MSU my freshman year!
edited to add: those who are better at graphics than I am (uh, almost everyone) please send your submissions for commemorative LJ icons! :)

I'm looking to get a new winter coat this year, and peacoats are the cutest things ever. I'm torn as to whether or not they are warm enough for Michigan winters. (FYI, I'm a Michigan native with a pretty normal Columbia coat now)
So, any feedback on peacoats is appreciated. :)

I'll have to leave sometime tomorrow, but I'll leave the ticket with my boyfriend and hook you guys up. It's easiest if you email me at lizsto@gmail.com.

Hey everyone, I'm having issues with the screen of my laptop, and I was wondering where I can go to get it fixed for free. Any help regarding this issue would be great. Thank you.

I'm looking for a place where I can get my hair cut at a reasonable price and have it look good (going for a bob, so some shaping would be nice). I'm hoping for no more than $50 (the cheaper the better, of course). Near campus is a plus, but I do have a car. I'm hoping for a place that takes walk-ins but will make an appointment if necessary.
The previous entries on this were from 2006 and 2003; they recommended Aveda and Shear Impact.
Thanks!

| Regular class vs minicourses |
[14 Sep 2008|09:38pm] |
So here's my drama. Right now I have a gaping hole in my schedule because I dropped a 4 credit class. Most of the professors I emailed said they wouldn't allow me into their class because they've covered so much material by now. The rest of the professors didn't ban me from their courses, but also didn't sound entirely optimistic. I've never taken a minicourse before, so I'm completely oblivious to the work you have to put into it to obtain a good grade. Do you guys think it would be less painful to sign up for 4 minicourses that start in October, rather than spend ridiculous amounts of time catching up the two weeks I've missed in a regular course? Thanks in advance for the opinions :D
Minicourses I'm considering (hey, I'm desperate):

Does anyone either need someone to sublet from them next year fall semester, or need a place for winter but not fall? Do You Dream of making Art that Matters?
Do You Love the Theatre?
Are you Excited to Collaborate with your Peers?
THIS IS WHAT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR.
This project includes a minimal time commitment during first semester and will culminate in a fully produced performance second semester. Performance material will be created collaboratively drawing on the experiences of community members who participate in facilitated workshops. Thematic content is likely to include mental health disorders and how they may effect one's perception of the world as well as society's treatment and labeling of the 'disordered'. Collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach are key to this work and all people of an artistic bent are welcome to enrich a process that is being forged as a new way to create theatre. For more information of if you cannot attend one of the scheduled meetings, contact Laura at (lauraprz@umich.edu)

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough", from the party across the street |
] |
So ... this year I'm living on Wilmot, near Observatory. I thought it'd be quiet at night here, but every night it's been loud outside ... understandably so, since it was Welcome Week. Tonight, however, someone across the street (on Washtenaw? Or maybe Wilmot Ct.?) is having a party.
My question is this: is this area a huge party area? I know Washtenaw near Hill is, because of the frats/sororities, but I thought this area would be quieter at night. I'm curious, because for the past week or so it's been really loud out, every night - but this might've just been from Welcome Week.

| First Special Reading Course? |
[28 Aug 2008|07:51pm] |
Hey Michiganders,
My program requires that I complete a "First Special Reading Course" in either French or German.
Have any of you taken such a course? Is it a course that one could complete (B or higher) without any prior knowledge of the language? Also, what's the workload/structure of the course? I'm trying to decide whether to try to pass it in French (which I studyed years ago and don't remember) or German (which I know nothing about, but I'd prefer to study) and whether to pursue it during the semester or summer.
Thanks for any input!

| IT bits around campus |
[28 Aug 2008|04:05pm] |
While everyone settles in for Fall Term, I thought I'd keep you apprised of some things going on with computing on campus. First, ITCS is piloting a new, sexier e-mail client for the Web, based on Roundcube. You can check it out here: https://web.mail.umich.edu/roundcube/
Second, the Michigan Union computing site is back open. For those that don't know, it's a computer lab in the basement of the Union, open 24/7, with black-and-white, color, and tabloid-sized printers. It's got new computers and new tabletops. There are two entrances: the West Quad courtyard off of Madison St. (across the street from South Quad, just walk in and go all the way to the back, swiping your M-Card at the door to your right) and a staircase by the International Center in the Michigan Union. If you're in the food court of the Union, head towards the Computer Showcase, go past it and through the three doors, then down the stairs to your right.
Also, freshmen and those new to the group: be sure to check out Virtual Sites if you need to use software (e.g. Photoshop, Matlab, SPSS) at home but don't want to buy it, and MPrint if you need to print something from your computer to a campus printer (now with .doc support!).
Enjoy!

| Job? Job! |
[25 Aug 2008|04:33pm] |
Hi!
I help run a local record label called Suburban Sprawl Music, and we'd love a fall intern.
An exciting rundown of what our past interns have done: - Photocopies! - Faxing stuff! - Email! - Managing Myspace accounts! - Telephone calls! - Updating show listings on our website! - Research/Using Google! - SPREADSHEETS! - Mailing/FedEx-ing stuff! - Putting up posters!
Ideally, you'd be at least a little familiar with the "indie rock" and music in general.
We're a part of the Quack Media family, so you might be asked to do some things for them too. They do publishing, and videos, and a bunch of other media type stuff. Cool!
This is a paid position with flexible scheduling (we do keep normal business hours though), and we're on Main Street above Connor O'Neills.
If you are interested, email me at zach[at]suburbansprawlmusic.com and include a resume if you have one. If you want to get acquainted with Suburban Sprawl or Quack, visit www.subsprawl.com or www.quackmedia.com.
Thanks!
- Zach
