you do understand that many of the homeless in berkeley are products of the reagan era and are not stupid kids too proud to go back home to mommy and daddy, right?

Quite a few are crazy schizophrenics, but quite a few are also people that have chosen a life of drugs and 'freedom' over the constraints of our society. My roommate invited one of them to live with us for a week, which ultimately lead to us being robbed, but we learned quite a bit about them. There are a bunch of different classes of homeless out there. The solitary old people are pretty much crazy, but the hippies and street kids that comprise the majority of homeless you see around here? They've chosen to be homeless. They've also explicitly chosen to be homeless in Berkeley because of all the saps that support their habits by being 'generous'. It's one thing to be sympathetic and understanding, quite another to be a naive fool. Many people here need to find that balance.

well, that is what i am saying. i just wanted her to be aware of the fact that some of them are crazy and really cant distinguish between the choices they have. totally agree about the hippies/street kids though--they kind of make me sick. they really detract from the real problem of homelessness and make people completely apathetic to all parts of the issue. no college student should support their habits, especiallywhen they sit on telegraph all day asking 'spare any change for pot? spare any pot for a change?'

Yet another cheap shot at Reagan. I'll be sure the Cal Patriot hears of this...

Whatever happened to looking at things from other people's POVs?

I think I'd feel bad enough being homeless without seeing THAT walking by me.

i believe that is directed at the stupid gutter punks who think its cool to be homeless when theyre perfectly capable of acquiring jobs and probably have family somewhere that wouldn't mind them coming back if they pull their weight (think about the way people look in some of the businesses in berkeley, so it isnt about appearance. its probably more about living the good life off of college students as to why jobs are a no no.)

i also feel worse for their animals than for them.

Interesting though, I usually find that street pets are so much better behaved than most family pets. I figured it had something to do with ridiculous amounts of socialization for the animals.

I understand that the wearer might want the message directed at a smaller segment of the homeless population - fine. That's not the point. The point is, this message comes off as mean to the WHOLE population.

Whatever the person wearing this shirt is thinking doesn't matter. What matters is how someone feels reading it.

I'd worry more about one of the legitimately crazy homeless going off on me wearing that shirt.

Just watch out for this one guy without shoes who used to be around Sproul a lot. He threatened to kill me and I was just sitting there.

usually they don't ask me if i have some, but rather if i can spare some. once when i said, "not today, sorry," the woman yelled, "well don't you have an atm card?" and then promptly took a call on her cell phone.

That sounds delicious. Better than the crazy one at work who asks to spare some change, only to mutter something about me being a dirty jew.

well you are a dirty jew. but that has nothing to do with sparing change.

i love you stephen. anti-semetic thoughts aside.
