Tips on buying a used 2001 Toyota Prius? Good idea? Bad idea?
I am considering selling my brand new 2007 Honda Accord SE and buying a 2001 Toyota Prius. Most of these vehicles retail for just under 10,000 and have between 90,000 and 100,000 miles on them. I've heard rumors that the battery may have to be replaced near the 100,000 mile mark. Does anyone know if this is true? Is there a way to check the battery life? What else should I consider? Overall -- is this a good idea or a bad idea?
I also posted my question on Yahoo! Answers, so you're free to respond over there as well to share your knowledge with a broader audience.

My hope is that NEXT year a plug-in hybrid will take the prize next year as "cleanest or greenest car". And by the way I have had relatively few problems with my Honda NGV vehicle (which I fuel at home, with a home refueling appliance). And it's a cheaper fuel than $4.00 a gallon gasoline that's for sure.
Greenest Vehicle Five Years Running For the fifth consecutive year, the Civic GX NGV has been named America's Greenest Car by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's Green Book® Online. This alternative-fuel vehicle has come out on top more times than any other car because it is fueled by clean Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for nearly zero emissions. A 113-hp, 1.8-liter, 16-valve, SOHC i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine gives this car the power to get up and go--greener.

hello all!
i posted awhile ago about how i'm getting a new prius (package 5) for my college graduation.
at first i thought i wanted barcelona red and then i changed my mind to spectra blue mica. we special ordered one in spectra blue but it will take about 12 weeks to get here (california) since they are hard to get and have to be shipped basically straight from japan. the problem is, now i'm having second thoughts on the color!!
i saw a spectra blue one parked in a neighborhood and examined it a little more closely then i was ever able to before and the color just really reminds me of the car i have now. it's not a bad thing, i think it's pretty, but i'm just feeling indecisive.
i'm thinking about changing my mind back to barcelona red or possibly going a whole new direction and getting silver pine mica. my mind is a mess :) my salesman said not to worry about the special order if i change my mind about the color since the spectra blues are in such demand, he knows he will be able to sell it almost instantly.
my mom likes the red. my boyfriend likes the blue. my dad likes the pine. help!!!

I found this article interesting. I already knew that the running-on-all-electric-under-30-mph option was unavailable (deemed illegal, yes?) for U.S.-owned Priuses because of the silence factor, but a car with extra noise so people can hear ya comin'? Better not be anything as annoying as that damned back-up beeper.

Hi!
Hope this thing is still on :)
I was curious about mileage on new prii. I've had mine since late January (2008, black, officially named "Shadow" in honor of the dodge shadow it replaced, but commonly referred to as "the vroom." I luvr it. It is beautiful and a lovebug. Ok, I am done gushing). I was curious if and how much one can expect mileage to improve over time. I understand this happens with all vehicles to an extent, and the dealer specifically told me it would not be the most efficient in the beginning. So far (at around 3k miles) I am getting about 41 miles per gallon, with relatively conservative, mostly in-town driving. What have been your experiences?

Background: I have a 2005 Toyota Prius that has 38k or so miles on it that I bought new in October 2005.
I have also moved in the last 7 months from Southern California (where I bought the car) to the Iowa/Illinois area.
Okay, so about a month ago, I had ONE oxygen sensor replaced because the check engine light came on and I took the car in and that's what they said needed to be checked.
That same time, it seemed the air flow sensor was also on its way out.
The check engine light came on again almost immediately and stayed on because I'd already spent too much that weekend to get it fixed.
Well, I took it into another dealership and they checked and said that there are codes for the air flow sensor AND two more oxygen sensor codes.
Is this just my car, or is there actually something wrong with the sensor system? Or could it be something else?

I've been lurking here for awhile, but now need some Prius advice. I just found two scratches on the front right side of my bumper. After I panicked and cried about it for 40 minutes, I parked it in my garage and started buffing away some of the scratch. Most of it I could scrape away with a fingernail and it looked good as new, however there is a 3 inch black scratch (I have the Silver Pine Mica) that feels a bit deeper and I'm scared to try to mess with it. Toward the wheel area there is a thinner, 1.5 inch black scratch that doesn't bother me as much. It literally looks like somebody made a mark with a black crayon. I am wondering if this is a very deep scratch down the the metal of the car, or leftover from the paint of whoever hit me.
So I'm wondering, have you had to repair scratches on your Prius and, if so, what did you use to do it?
Thanks in advance, Erin
P.S.- I was bawling because the car is only 6 weeks old, though I probably would have cried had it been 6 years old. I love this car, I don't want anything to happen to it!

Hi, everyone. I am the proud owner of an '08 Spectra Blue Mica Prius named Tobias. I have a couple of questions.
Question, the First: Is this true? Can you really disable the reverse beep? Has anyone successfully done this?
Question, the Second: There is an auxiliary (AUX) sound input device in my center console, and I'm wondering if I can really hook up my iPod through it, and if so, what kind of cable do I need? How do you play your iPod (or other mp3-type device) in your Prius?
Thanks!

So my '02 prius with 94,000 mi on it has this problem. It's winter right now in Chicago, and every night the car dies and needs to be jumped in the morning. (It's happened about 3 times so far, and two times consecutivley) I think the big battery has a 100,000 mi waranty on it, but the guy at the toyota dealership who I have not seen yet says I need a new little battery which only has a 36,000 3 year waranty on it. He says the battery and 'chip' cost about $300. Is there a cheaper way of doing this, could it be something else, or does this sound right to you?

Hello all,
I will be getting a brand new Prius for my college graduation in May! I'm really excited but I have heard about weird things going wrong with the Prius that doesn't happen to other cars.
If you could all chip in a couple words of advice on what things to ask my car salesman, I would really appreciate it!
P.S. I'm thinking of getting Barcelona Red :)

| Chicago servicing? |
[29 Jan 2008|08:02am] |
Can anyone recommend a good place to get the car serviced in the Chicago area? Near Glen Ellyn/Lombard if at all possible.
I am considering getting it serviced at Lombard Toyota.
I got spoiled by the dealership I used to get it serviced at, which I cannot go back to because it's in SoCal and I'm not anymore. But they always gave good service.
I need the oil changed and likely the tires changed, but the tires don't necessarily need to be at the dealership.
does anyone have any suggestions?
C.

Hi!
I joined this community a few months ago and have been reading along, but haven't introduced myself yet. I have a white 2005 Prius named Morm (because his license plate is 5 LDS ...), which I bought from my parents. I'm from California, but now have Morm at school in Poughkeepsie, NY.
My dad obsessed over the 2005 Prius (and now his new 2007 Prius) and taught me everything about Prii that one could possibly want to know. But since none of us have ever lived in a cold climate (where it snows or gets extremely cold), neither of us know what to expect for Morm this winter. I know that I'll get lower gas mileage, but that's about it. If anyone who lives in a cold(er) climate has any advice about winter driving, etc. I would be very appreciative. I'm especially worried about road salt and car cancer ...
Thanks!
