Synthetic Hair [Sep. 6th, 2008|08:00 pm]

wittyinnuendo
Hey,
Does anyone in the Don Mills/Eglinton area know where I could purchase Kanekalon Jumbo Braid at a decent price? I ran across it in Hiscotts, but, at 6 bucks a bag it isn't exactly DIY friendly.

Please and Thank you!

Did anyone else get this in the mail? [Sep. 6th, 2008|06:49 pm]

This is probably junk mail but yesterday I received a letter from "The Reader's Digest Association" saying, "My full name, you made it. 99% of Canadians, including 99% of Ontario have been disqualified from our Nationwide offer and will not receive an important envelope within the next 3-5 days. That envelope may contain a winning number, and could see you become $500,000.00 richer". I just did a quick search and found this http://www.readersdigest.ca/sweeps_new.html How did they even know my name and address if I have never even heard of their magazine till now?! :S

Cat-sitting service [Sep. 6th, 2008|05:35 pm]
matt_hre
I know I'm planning things a bit early, but come Christmastime I wil be looking for a cat-sitting service to look after my 2 cats while I'm out of town.  Nothing fancy...just someone who will be able to come in daily and feed them, change the litter, etc.

I've found a few promising places on-line, but it's always good to hear first-hand stories if anyone can think of a good place to recommend (or a place to avoid).  Be sure to let me know if the place you used can cover major holidays like Christmas, if you happen to know that.

I'm in the Christe Pits area, if that's useful.

Thanks in advance!

Kind people of LJ, please help us return this cat to its home.

The cat is white, female?, probably deaf, blue eyes, very friendly, and no collar or microchip. It frequents Benson and Arlington mostly during the morning and evening. If you think you may know who this cat belongs to, please either reply to this post or email lesleylayrmt@yahoo.ca

TTC unveils new subway arrival system: "Next train 2 min" [Sep. 5th, 2008|03:04 pm]

TTC unveils new subway arrival system

Adam Giambrone, chairman of the Toronto Transit Commission, stood expectantly on the southbound platform at Dundas station yesterday, eyes glued to the TV screen an inch above his head.

"Next train …2 min," read a brand new strip at the bottom of the familiar information screen. Then it flickered: "Next train… 1 min."

A few seconds later, a rumble was audible in the distance. A headlight appeared from the north in the tunnel. Then with a crescendo of noise and a whoosh of air the subway swept in while the screen helpfully announced: "Next train is in the station."

The TTC yesterday unveiled the prototype of its next-train-arrival system, designed to inform passengers when the next subway is due, but more importantly to let them know about problems on the line that are slowing traffic.

"From time to time, we have delays," explained Mr. Giambrone. "When we have problems, though, the brilliant thing about this system is that it allows us to communicate those directly to people on the platforms.… It's frustrating when you're sitting on a platform, you're waiting for your train, you don't have any information.

"It doesn't necessarily make the delay speed up any faster … but it does make people feel better about knowing the information."

The next-train-arrival alert is just one of a series of new customer-service enhancements the TTC will be implementing in the coming months and years that Mr. Giambrone said will revolutionize the way riders use the system.

After the three-month Dundas pilot project, which harnesses the existing block signal system to track the progress of trains, the in-house designed technology will be in all 69 TTC subway stations by the end of next year.

In addition, the TTC just awarded an $8-million contract for a next-bus-and next-streetcar-arrival system using global-positioning satellite technology to let waiting passengers know if they have time to grab a coffee or mail a letter without missing their bus.

Eventually, the TTC's Web site will put all the information at every rider's fingertips, and text-message alerts will warn of delays on preferred routes.

We have 69 subway stations? Ha!

It'll take another year to have this in place at every subway station, but I guess it does mean a lot of new equipment. Looking forward to being able to browse to the TTC's website on my cell phone and find out when I need to get down to the stop to catch the next streetcar (in real terms, though the estimates are pretty spot-on already).

Okay, you guys were so helpful yesterday that I have a few more questions:

1) Does anyone know where I can buy a Laken kukuxumusu water bottle? (think cute designs, like this one.)

2) Where can I get the best Indian food in town? Bonus if it's in the Kipling/Steeles area (though the one on York's campus might be the only one qualifying for that, and I'm not sure if it's any good), or the subway line.

Thanks!

Going to The Social! [Sep. 5th, 2008|01:06 pm]

savethesheep
Hello internet,

So I was invited to a night out at The Social -- attendance mandatory. I've never been there before, and was actually under the impression that it was sort of hipster-scum/douchebaggy, but new information leads me to believe that it's pretty "clubby".

Anyway, I don't know anyone who has actually ever been there before, so I come to you, dear internet, with some questions, mostly about the appropriate dress code. Mainly, does it matter what I wear, or will I be openly mocked/turned away at the door if I'm not wearing whatever the kids think is cool these days? The people I'm going with are pretty fancy, so I wouldn't want to embarrass them on their important night out if I turn up in jeans and a tshirt.

Also, how expensive are drinks? I suspect I will need a lot of them.

Thank you!!

Moving to TO [Sep. 5th, 2008|11:33 am]

I am planning on making the move to Toronto hopefully for October 1st or November 1st( if needed) since I am going to school at U of T. I am only a part time student this year so I am not eligible for student housing so my boyfriend and I are trying to find a small 1 bedroom or large bachelor to share. I am finding some listings but would like advice on the ares they are in since first impressions can be limiting. Some listings are:
Bloor/Symington, Wellesely/Howard/Parliment, Dundas/Keele, Manning Ave, Dundas/Bloor, Isabella, and Bloor/Sherbourne. I know this is a lot to ask but any tips on living in these neighbourhoods would be such a help.

Thanks.

A tailor? A seamstress? HELP! [Sep. 4th, 2008|10:58 pm]

mich_ish
So.

I'm skinny, usually size 0 or 00 in pants. I work at a store that sells Rock & Republic jeans and since I am a brand whore, I would really love to use my discount and buy a pair. But the down side about being ridiculously thin (it's just the way I am, I am healthy) is that their smallest size (a 23) DOES NOT FIT. R&Rs are designed to be extremely fitted and then to stretch out with one wear. They are comfortable, which is wrong because they need to be TIGHT when first tried on. They are unfortunately not. Is it even possible to take in a pair of jeans? They're expensive and I wouldn't want to buy them and then get them destroyed because it's just not possible to fix them. If it is possible, can anyone recommend a really good place that can do this?

I've also heard that places can shrink your jeans and that they won't stretch back out? I was told by a couple of my co-workers, but I've never heard of this before. Please help out a brand whore in need!

TIA!

Hairstyling school [Sep. 4th, 2008|01:00 pm]

midnite_tiger
My goal of attending hairstyling school is soon upon me and my original intention of going to Marca College has come into question because a couple people have hurled other school names at me, each of them claiming the program they suggested to be the best option. So what do you, dear people who've researched and those who have gone and those who are hairdressers, think?

My sitch:
- recently moved out, so I need a part time program that will allow me to still work full time (my job has flexible hours)
- not interested in working for a high end foofy trendy salon so a place that won't look down on me for not being that way
- would preferrably like a program that is OSAP compatible. I have a large amount of money saved but don't like the idea of spending it all in one go and leaving myself with no net
- I like my current job, and would like to not have to quit it until something very solid comes along, so if there is apprenticing built in to the program, it should allow for at least a couple shifts a week at my current business

A little picky, I know, but I don't want to leave myself scraping for dollars.

And on a completely unrelated note...does anyone know where to find NIC cubes in the city for cheap? I need to build a playpen for my guinea pig

No "Downtown Relief" subway line anytime soon, but how about one on Eglinton Ave? [Sep. 4th, 2008|11:07 am]

sully2001ca
[Tags|]

New downtown subway far off, Metrolinx says

A new subway line running east-west through downtown Toronto is unlikely to be built any time soon, said the head of a provincial agency set to unveil a new regional public transit blueprint for southwestern Ontario at the end of September.

Dubbed the downtown relief line, it would run in a U-shape from Pape Station in the east to Dundas Station in the west, linking Riverdale, Leslieville, the emerging West Donlands neighbourhood, the Distillery district, the Waterfront, the Exhibition, Liberty Village and Parkdale.

Such a subway line was mentioned this year in a discussion paper published by Metrolinx, but Rob MacIsaac, chairman of the body, said the proposal is unlikely to be moved forward from its projected 2020 start date.

Mayor David Miller reiterated the city's preference for light-rail expansion yesterday. The TTC's Transit City plan calls for new dedicated streetcar rapid transit on major thoroughfares, including Don Mills Road, Eglinton Avenue, Sheppard Avenue and the western waterfront.

"It provides a coherent system. That's why the plan works and why it's financially affordable," said Mr. Miller, who sits on Metrolinx's governing board. "Transit City is the TTC's plan and it meets the needs from now probably for the next, at least 30 years, for our neighbourhoods in Toronto to have network of rapid transit."

Metrolinx will reveal its transportation strategy for the Greater Toronto Area at the end of a month.

This is reference to an earlier post titled, TTC considering building new subway line by 2018. And, um, I guess the news is that probably won't be happening.

That said, how about a subway line under Eglinton Ave instead? (Which the TTC's Adam Giambrone objects to on the grounds of low ridership and cost.)

This weather is killing me.  It is ridiculously hot.  And  in my mind, just because the kids are back in school  it is not a valid reason to close all the outdoor pools.  Me and the kid are dying of the hot.

So.  Tell me Toronto, are there other outdoor pools in the city that are open to the public?  Bonus points if they're in the east end.

I don't mind paying a fee to swim, but I'd rather it not gouge my pocketbook.

Alternately, does anyone have a backyard pool they'd love to share?  ;)  I'll trade you for dog walking?

Lost small white dog in Ajax Whitby Area [Sep. 3rd, 2008|11:42 am]

Please help us find Bailey! Bailey is a very small white lapso/yorki mix, all white. She has health problems that need to be looked after! She is 7 years old, was taken from Walmart at Stevenson and 401, seen on train tracks near Stevenson and Gibb, and then picked up by three women in a two toned SUV at Burns and Sodden. She was taken Tuesday August 26th, and seen at Burns and Sodden either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. She is a very timid and sometimes nervous dog, very afraid of men, and has a lot of food allergies. She gets very depressed when not with her Mom and sometimes refuses to eat. She has the habit of chewing the hair from her legs and paws.
Please help us find her! We want her back very badly!!! If you have any information, or think you may have seen her, please let us know!! Please comment if you know anything. THANK YOU!!

here's a question: [Sep. 2nd, 2008|07:40 pm]

Dear Toronto Community:

Please help me find a perfect wedding/reception venue. Here are its characteristics:

1. It is attractive in an interesting way.

2. It has off-street parking.

3. It will hold about 150 - 180 people.

4. It will allow us to use any caterer we wish (we require vegetarian kosher food, and will need to bring in all our own food, dishes, pans/ fryer/&c).

Ideally, this space is unusual and not hugely expensive. A small museum? A gorgeous garden where they'll let us put up a tent? Your brother-in-law's winery? Or something? (something that is not either of the boat clubs in the island, which carry bad memories)

Oh, and - we're getting married in may 2009, on a Sunday. If we can find a place to do it. ::grin::

Thanks much!

However, I'm not vehicularly enabled, so I'm not quite sure how to go about refilling my tank (or exchanging it, since I hear that's what they do these days). (I'm also new to BBQing so I don't even know how to unhook the tank, but I'm sure I'd figure that out.)

A quick google found me http://www.bbqon.com - a company that delivers tanks to your house. However, there are two things that trouble me about this:
a) I would have to purchase a tank from them, plus a backup, for an initial cost of $105, which seems excessive
a) part i) What, then, would I do with my current tank?
b) The parent company is Sunrise, which is, y'know, the one that exploded. So I'm not even sure if they're functional at the moment.

Any input? Alternatives? Advice?
Thank you!

Bugs...gross [Sep. 2nd, 2008|03:06 pm]

Hey, here's a tricky situation I can't find any info about.

My building is being sprayed for bed bugs (it's about time!) and a notice was sent out telling us all to strip our beds and empty out our dressers and closets. Pain in the butt, but oh well.

The thing that I'm wondering about is a second letter she slid under our doors. She stated in the letter that "If you refuse treatment you will be fined a $500 fee." I assume it was a response to a few tenants complaining.haha

Can she legally do that? I tried reading over the Residential Tenancies Act but the only thing I could find that MAY relate to the issue is:
"134. (1) Unless otherwise prescribed, no landlord shall, directly or indirectly, with respect to any rental unit,
(a) collect or require or attempt to collect or require from a tenant or prospective tenant of the rental unit a fee, premium, commission, bonus, penalty, key deposit or other like amount of money whether or not the money is refundable;"

Would this fall under the "otherwise prescribed" category or could I call her out on it if I so desired? (I doubt I would though since it doesn't really affect me)

Any thoughts?
