“Shye!” Max called out. He fell to his knees next to me and embraced me. “What happened?”
But I kept my eyes locked on Rose. His blue eyes were still glittering with tears. Slowly, those tears fell out of his eyes.
I don’t want to see him crying. I’ve done too much of that.
For a moment, Max and I were on our knees. And Rose was tearing up. A painful silence filled the room.
“You can go to school, Max,” Rose said, wiping his eyes. “Shye and I will be fine.”
Max didn’t let go of me.
“I’ll call you later,” I whispered to Max. A questioned look appeared on his baby face. “Please, Chang Min.”
So Max let go of me and got up.
“Promise you’ll call me?” he asked. I nodded and forced a smile.
“Promise.”
He looked at me for a moment, and then grabbed his book bag and left.
When he left, everything was quiet.
I hate silence.
Rose’s eyes were still fixed on me. The tears had stopped falling from his eyes.
“Have you had breakfast?” he asked, breaking the painful silence. I shook my head. “C’mon, let’s have breakfast.”
I sat still on my knees. I wanted to move, but I couldn’t.
MOVE, SHYE! MOVE IT!
Rose didn’t wait for me to react. He reached his hand out for me to take it. It took me a moment to realize what he was doing.
He’s offering to take my hand and help me up! This is crazy! What am I to do?
I didn’t know what else to do. Hero turned his back on me, I confessed my love to Rose, and now Rose is indirectly confessing his love to me. What am I to do?
Take his hand, you dumb ass.
I reached out and took his hands. The moment our hands touched, I felt…safe. The softness of his feminine hand seemed to let me know what I was doing was right.
As soon as I got up, he let go. I almost wished he didn’t let go. But I didn’t say anything and followed him into the kitchen.
His black hair sat peacefully on his shoulders. It didn’t bounce as he walked.
When his hair bounces, that means he’s happy. Is he happy with his decision to take me back?
Max placed a glass of Coke in front of me.
“Spill it!” he said with a demanding voice. I took the Coke. It was nighttime, and we were at The Flower. Rose said he had to drop by Eun Jin’s place right quick to check on her. She was still sick. He told me to meet him at The Flower. I called Max and told him to meet me there to keep me company while I waited for Rose.
“Alissa told Hero everything,” I said and took a sip of the cold soft drink. “Now Hero thinks I’m like every other girl. And he walked away from me, like our entire friendship meant nothing.”
Max nodded. “What did I tell you about him? He’s a lousy person. You should’ve never chased after him in the first place.”
I raised an eyebrow. I was about to curse at him, but I decided not to. Suddenly, I remembered something.
“Jenny was there too,” I said.
That caught Max’s attention. “Really?”
“Yeah,” I replied. “I’m really sorry, Max. I’m sorry about what happened between you and Jenny.”
Max lowered his eyes. “It all happened too fast anyway. I guess it ended for the better.”
I noticed a sad twinkle in his eyes.
“You really liked her, didn’t you?” I asked in a quiet tone. He didn’t look up. “Didn’t you?”
“How about a movie tonight?” he said, changing the subject. “My treat!”
“Chang Min…”
Right before I could say more, Rose approached the table. “Are you ready to go?”
Max looked up at Rose, and looked back down. “You can go, Shye.”
I looked at Rose, and then at Max. Should I stay with Max and keep him company?
“I’ll be fine,” Max assured me. “Go have fun with Rose.” He forced a smile.
I studied Max’s face for a moment, and then stood up.
“If you need anything,” I said, “call me.”
Max nodded and I walked towards Rose.
Before we reached the door, a parade of girls with huge chests and skanky clothes entered. Most of those girls looked devastated, which made them look uglier.
“I can’t believe you’re leaving us, oppa!” I heard a couple of girls say. Rose stopped walking and I walked into him. His hair was in my face. It smelled like strawberries.
Who were those girls talking about?
Just then, Hero entered The Flower with Alissa dangling from his left side. That devil.
“I’m sorry, ladies,” Hero apologized. “I’ll be in France for a couple of weeks. But I’ll keep in touch with all of you.”
I never hated Hero so much right then. He was playing all of those girls, and none of them seemed bothered by it. Ugh. And to think, this morning, I was almost like them.
“We’ll send you postcards!” Alissa uttered happily. “Aren’t we?”
Hero smiled, which—somehow—made me tingle inside. No, stop that!
One of the girls jumped onto Hero and started sobbing.
“Who am I going to have fun with until then?” the girl sobbed.
A ball of anger filled inside of me. Calm down, Shye. You’re not that type of girl anymore. It’s all gone, all gone.
Hero kindly placed her down and smiled. “Don’t worry! I have other friends that can help you.”
Has he always been this jack ass? Have I been so oblivious? Is this what Max warned me about?
“Our flight is tomorrow morning,” Alissa said with a huge smile. “We’ll party until then.”
Hero nodded and smiled at the girls. The girls started to squeal and jump up and down with excitement. But over their excitement, Hero’s eyes trailed off. That was when our eyes met.
--------“You’re so kind to me, Shye,” Hero whispered.
Somebody pinch me!
I forced a smile. “It’s my job as your friend.”
He laughed at my comment. “You’re really pretty.”
I could’ve died! But I played “cool.”
“You’re stupid,” I forced myself to say. “But you’re prettier than I am. That’s why model agencies want you so much.”
“You have to help me smile today. I don’t really feel like smiling in front of the camera today.”
I frowned. “You’re so helpless!”
He looked me in the eyes. There was silence for a moment.
“That’s why I need you, Shye,” Hero said, in a quiet voice. His face was so close to mine that I could smell his breath. Spearmint! --------
Alissa noticed Hero staring off into space. When she saw that we were looking at each other, anger filled her face. It was the same angry face she had earlier today. That’s when she grabbed Hero and pulled him closer to her.
Hero looked at her, surprised. He looked as if he almost didn’t want to be standing next to her.
Out of nowhere, Rose grabbed my hand. Our fingers interlocked, and he started towards the door, where Hero and the group of slutty girls were.
Hero noticed us coming, and he kept his eyes on us. Alissa tried to pull Hero closer, but he pulled away.
“Min Woo,” he said, shaking off Alissa. He stuck his hand out for Rose to shake. A ‘friendly’ smile appeared on Hero’s face. “How have you been?”
Rose stopped in front of Hero and looked at his hand. Rose still had a tight grip on my hand.
Don’t let go…
Surprisingly, Rose didn’t let go nor shake Hero’s hand.
“Why are you still here?” Rose asked, almost sounding confused. I was shocked at what he said! Hero’s smiled dropped, and Alissa let out a gasp. “Hurry up and go to France already.”
Score!!!!!! Go Rose!
I heard Alissa mutter something under her breath. My body suddenly rushed with excitement the moment I saw the pissed-off look on Hero’s face. Score for Rose!
Rose glared at Hero for a moment more. The tension between the two suddenly increased.
Without another word, Rose and I left the Flower.
When we reached the outside, the cold bit through my jacket. Rose let go of my hand and started walking quickly ahead of me.
“I hate that jerk,” I heard Rose say under his breath. “I hate people like him.”
He realized that I was trailing behind him and turned around. The instant his blue eyes met mine made me warm up inside and out.
“I’m sorry,” Rose said and lowered his head in shame. “I don’t mean to be so bitter.”
Bitter? HA! Hero deserved it!
“It’s okay,” I said, playing calm.
For a moment, we stared at the ground.
I’m really confused. So, are we going out again or what?
“C’mon,” Rose said. “We’ve got places to go.”
This isn’t a date. This is just me following Rose like a lost puppy.
I stared at the wall before me. Plastered onto the walls were frames filled with thousands of tattoo designs. On the wall next to it, thousands of belly-button rings were framed. The colors hurt my eyes.
“Which one should I get?” Rose asked, pointing to the wall with belly-button rings. I raised an eyebrow.
“Belly-button ring?” I questioned. That’s disgusting.
“Yeah,” Rose said, touching the glass on the frame. “Which one?”
I walked up to the wall in disgust. “I don’t like any of them.”
Rose turned to me and pouted. “I like this one.”
Of course, he pointed to the neon pink one. “Pretty!” he said, tapping the glass like a child in front of a candy shop.
I rolled my eyes and walked away.
“Next!” the grungy man at the desk shouted. Rose quickly ran up to the counter.
“I’ll like number 29,” he said.
The man nodded. “ID?”
Rose handed him his driver’s license. The man scanned over it.
“Room 5,” he said, handing Rose his license.
“Can I bring someone with me?” Rose asked and turned around. He pointed at me.
The grungy man studied my figure for a moment and nodded.
Ugh.
Without another word, I followed after Rose down the hallway.
Seriously, all I’m doing is following him. I’m a puppy after all. Great.
Room 5 was pretty tiny. The walls were painted a scary red color. The ‘door’ was a curtain. Inside was a woman with blonde hair. She had on leather pants and a shirt that was cut too low. Basically, her boobs were falling out. It was disgusting.
“Number 29?” the woman asked. She placed her cigarette in the ashtray. Rose coughed at the smoke.
“Yeah,” he said through the smoke.
I took a seat next to the table sitting in the middle of the tiny room. The woman told him to rest on the table. He rested on the table and closed his eyes.
Looks like he’s going under surgery. Probably wants to be a full man. Ha. Ha
Shut up, Shye. You’re mean.
“This won’t hurt,” the woman said, taking out a long instrument. The needle!
I covered my eyes. I’m afraid of needles!
The woman noticed my fear. “What’s your girlfriend doing?”
“Don’t worry, Mary,” Rose said. He knows her? “She’ll be okay.”
“She isn’t that one girl you kept talking about, is she?” Mary asked.
That girl?
I uncovered my eyes and study Rose, who was flat on the table. Mary was giving me an odd look.
“Must be,” Mary answered her own question. “She’s pretty like you said.”
What has Rose said about me to her? Has he been here before?
“That’s Shye,” Rose replied. “Make sure this ring stays this time, Mary. Remember what happened last time? It just fell out.”
Oh, so Rose has been here before? And he’s had his belly-button pierced before? That is really disturbing.
“No prob,” said the woman. I covered my eyes again when I saw the needle.
I sat there like that while the woman went to work on piercing Rose’s belly button.
“Almost finished,” the woman said after a while. “Stay still.”
Just then, I heard Rose scream. “Oh my GOD!!!!”
So, I screamed too.
“I’m bleeding!” I heard Rose scream. My eyes were still covered, but I screamed along with him.
“Oh my God!” I screamed, feeling his pain.
“Calm down!” Mary screamed also. I heard her rush and open a cabinet.
“I’m going to die!” Rose screamed again. So I screamed too.
“Stop! Stop!” I screamed.
“I’m bleeding to death!” Rose continued.
Oh my gosh! Someone do something!
I uncovered my face and ran towards the table to assist Rose. But as soon as I stood up, I realized that Rose was just sitting there. His shirt was covering his stomach, and he looked perfectly fine. He was just sitting on the table. Mary, on the other hand, stood at the opposite end of the room.
There was no blood.
What?
Just then, Rose busted out in laughter. Mary joined in with the laughter.
A pissed-off look appeared on my face.
I’ve been punked!
I crossed my arms and turned away.
“We got her!” Rose laughed.
“That was funny!” Mary added.
Disgusted, I picked up my messenger bag and stormed out the tiny room. Rose and Mary continued in their laughter until Rose realized I had left.
“Shye!” he shouted after me.
I ran out of the nasty place.
Don’t come after me! I can’t believe you would do that! Urgh!
“Shye!” I heard Rose following behind me. “Shye! Don’t take it too seriously!”
Grrrrrrrr.
I picked up my feet and ran faster, but Rose caught up with me in no time. When he did reach me, he pinned me against the brick wall.
Our eyes met, and we were within an inch apart. His blue eyes locked me; I couldn’t do anything. When he blinked, his eyelashes almost touched me. That was how close he was to me.
This heart needs to stop beating so quickly or else I’m going to have a heart attack one day!
“I didn’t mean to trick you,” he said in a whispery way. “Please forgive me?”
You can’t say no to that, Shye. You just can’t.
“Puh-lease?” he gave me the puppy eyes.
Argh. Rose No! You have a way with using your eyes to get me. I hate you for that.
I nodded. He let go of me.
For another moment, we just gazed into each other’s eyes. This is a dream…This is too perfect to be real.
Just then, I slightly touched Rose’s stomach where he had just got it pierced. The slightest touch caused an immense pain. Rose groaned in pain.
“If you really want me, Rose No,” I teased, “you’ll have to catch me first.”
While Rose held onto his stomach, I ran away from him.
“Come and get me!” I shouted playfully. “SUCKER!”
But before I got far, I stumbled on my feet and fell onto my knees. I heard Rose walk up behind me. He let out a laugh.
I lost, already? I’m such a loser!
I waited for Rose to tag me and tell me I already lost. But he didn’t.
When I turned around, I saw him just standing there with a huge grin. His black bangs covered his eyes and moved along with the cold wind.
“What?” he asked.
“I lost already. Game over,” I said, quitting. I crossed my arms and sat flat on my behind. Oh, this reminded me too much of being five years old.
“No you haven’t,” he replied. “I’m giving you another chance to redeem yourself.”
I studied his face. Is it me, or does that last sentence mean something else?
“What are you talking about?” I questioned. Rose crouched down and placed his right arm on my shoulder.
My heart is racing! AH! I’m going to have a heart attack!
“Run really fast,” he advised. “And let’s see how long it takes for me to catch you.”
Again, I studied his face. His blue eyes seemed mischievous in a way. I could tell he was happy at that very moment. There’s just something about his eyes that always gets me…
This boy is weird. Why does he want me to keep running?
Without another word, I picked up my feet and ran as fast as I could. When I turned to see if Rose was coming, I was surprised to see Rose just standing there, giving me a chance to run further away.
No matter how fast or how far I go, Rose will always find a way to catch up with me. I just know he will because he IS Rose after all…
