I think we all know that Star Trek actors appeared elsewhere before acquiring their most famous roles, good aspiring actors that they were. And I think we all know of William Shatner's famous turn on The Twilight Zone in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet". (He was also the star of another good Twilight Zone episode, "Nick of Time"). Well, yesterday I watched the Twilight Zone episode "Valley of the Shadow", one of the hour-long episodes, from 1963.
This episode of The Twilight Zone features not only James Doohan, looking young, thin, and fit, with his real (non-Scottish-accented) voice, but David Opatoshu, who played the antagonist Anan Seven in the Star Trek episode "A Taste of Armageddon". Perhaps not accidentally, he plays the exact same type of role in "Valley of the Shadow", that of the leader of a flawed society, perpetuating its flaws to the detriment of the hero, with hard-to-believe professions of sorrow and regret for the pain his administration is causing that hero. His voice is the same, as are his benign, fatherly facial expressions.
James Doohan's role is less significant (he is only in one scene), and I didn't recognize him at first, though he appeared normally (not as an alien or anything masking his face). The combination of youth and his real voice threw me for a moment. But his performance was as good as anyone else's in the episode, quite convincing and enjoyable.
I recommend this treasure to all Star Trek fans, and I invite you to let me know of other such gems, regardless of series. These are talented performers in and out of Star Trek, as I am sure we would all agree. |
