[info]dan_lane: Update your social network statuses via SMS_To_LJ...

I love those TV adverts for Apple's iPhone that start "If you love facebook so much..." because I always end up shouting "WELL WHY DON'T YOU MARRY IT THEN?!" at the TV (link)... but really, loads of people use Facebook now!... or how about Jaiku? or Twitter? every single one of those has a status that can be updated.

There are a couple of services that allow you to update your statuses on all of those sites in one go.

I've integrated one of those services (Ping.FM, as it's the only one I know of that also supports LJ) into the SMS To LJ Gateway. It's only a quick hack until Ping.FM get their own SMS service up and running (I'm assuming they are working on one).

1. Signup to ping.fm (use the invite code "pingbeta").
2. Setup all your services with Ping.FM
3. Send a text message to +44 7890 716 820 in the following format:
P USERID MESSAGE

Where USERID is the bit before the @ on the posting address that ping.fm gives you for e-mail (USERID@ping.fm).

Example:

P thi9Fova This is a test :)

This hack uses exactly the same gubbins as [info]sms_to_lj and, is not associated with LiveJournal or Ping.FM.

[info]dan_lane: Union stuff...

I've deleted the last two posts and any rules contained within that affected, to my knowledge, no more than three regular users because they were attracting commentary from a wide range of people who have either never used the service or only used it once or twice.

If I can't put one simple restriction in place on a service I've personally offered completely free of charge for four years then maybe I should reconsider any further free services I decide to launch.

[info]dan_lane: The Gateway...

I took some photos of my office today, including a few of the SMS gateway (and a closeup for people that are that way inclined).

[info]dan_lane: Official Voiceposting numbers...

LJ has announced official voice posting numbers for the UK, the unofficial UK voicepost number I've been providing for the past year or so will stop working effective immediately.

[info]dan_lane: We're back!

The [info]sms_to_lj service is back up and running, again, my apologies for the prolonged outage!

Just as a refresher of what's provided:

  • If you have a basic LJ account, you can post by SMS using these instructions.
  • If you have a Plus or Paid account, you can post by SMS using these instructions.
  • Plus and Paid account holders in the UK can also make voiceposts by calling 020 7100 1117 (enable voiceposting here).

    [info]dan_lane: Prolonged outage...

Due to issues obtaining an internet connection in the new place (long story to do with LLU providers not doing their job properly... it's costing lots of money to get fixed and Ofcom are about to get involved) it's taking a bit longer than anticipated to bring the SMS gateway back up.

I've booked a BT engineer to come out and install a new line but they won't be doing that until the 16th and then I have to order ADSL on that line which could take a further week or two.

We're currently connecting via the 3G connection on my mobile phone so the connection is a bit sketchy, I'll try and get the gateway up and running via this 3G connection later this week if I get time but until we get ADSL again things will remain intermittent.

Plans were in motion to get the gateway moved to a data centre location to provide more stability but unfortunately this didn't happen before the move.

Apologies again for the prolonged outage.

    [info]dan_lane: Downtime!

Just a quick note to say that the SMS gateway will be unavailable from 00:00 (GMT) on Monday 26th February for a week or so as I'm moving house and the equipment is moving with me.

Once moved I'll work on getting the gateway back up and running again as soon as I get ADSL installed, as soon as I have a date for this I'll update.

My UK voice posting number remains unaffected since that is run from my companies equipment in a datacentre, plans are in motion to give the SMS gateway this level of stableness.

    [info]dan_lane: Voicepost Number

Looks like there was an issue with the UK Voicepost number disconnecting after about 3 minutes of recording.

Problem should now be resolved and you can record for as long as you like :)

    [info]dan_lane: Missing/Delayed posts

Looks like the SMS gateway fell over days ago, have restarted the gateway and watched as LOADS of messages flowed through.

Apologies for the length of the outage I've not been around much in the past few weeks to notice the gateway falling over.

Everything should be back to normal now.

    [info]roobarb: missing posts

am missing at least 7 posts, anyone have any idea where they've gone to?

    [info]dan_lane: TXTLJ

Paid users in the USA can now use the official TXTLJ service, see here for more info (this is completely unrelated to [info]sms_to_lj, I just thought some of you would like to know).

Thanks to those of you who went through all of the "when will this work in the UK?" posts in that thread and mentioned this service, I know that LJ are looking to launch the TXTLJ service in more countries soon.

For those of you joining us for the first time, instructions are here and I also provide a UK number for voiceposting on 020 7100 1117 (because I'm kind like that) :)

    Enjoy.

    [info]dan_lane: Update

Just a quick update to reply to two of the moderated posts that appeared on this community recently, no development work is currently taking place on sms_to_lj as I'm very busy with other projects at the moment. Having said that, everything is ticking over nicely :)

[info]pne asked about UTF-8 encoding messages so the gateway supports the entire GSM character set. I'll take a look at this when I get time but it probably won't happen for a few months if it happens at all this year.

Next up, [info]acclog asks: "Is it possible to post a message that spans over more than one text message?".

This is a topic that's come up previously, there once existed a hack to tie together multiple messages but I've no idea if it still works (does anyone use the ljdev keyword and can confirm this works?).

    [info]notsoliljames:

How long do posts usually take to appear? I've tried twice, once using +44 and once just using standard 0 (am in the UK) to post to [info]notsoliljames and they haven't appeared. I'm on 02... any idea why?

    Thanks. :)

    [info]sobota: USA being charged?

Hi, I'm using sms to lj in the United States. It works perfectly, but I noticed I was charged for sending the text. It wasn't much, but it showed up on my bill and I was just wondering if it's just because I live in the United State and there's nothing I can do about it.

    Here is the bill detail:

    5/13/06 Un Kingdom 9:12 AM 447890716820 1 0.15

    Cheers!

    [info]dan_lane: Move complete

Sorry it took a bit longer than anticipated (we did have to move ALL our stuff from the most easterly point of England to the west coast).

Anyway, the SMS gateway is back up and running and there are no more long outages planned.

    Thanks for your patience.

[info]dan_lane: UK Voice Posting (cheaper than before!)

Ok, so those of you who wanted to use voice posting from your mobiles were having issues with mobile operators charging a shitload for calls to 08444 numbers... and today I got a new allocation of geographic numbers.... soooooo:

    020 7100 1117

It's a standard geographical number so will use the inclusive minutes that most mobile operators provide. The only way I could make voiceposting cheaper for you guys is if I stuck it on an 0800 toll-free number (not going to happen today).

    [info]dan_lane: Outage: Saturday 29th April 2006

There will be a complete [info]sms_to_lj outage from around midday on the 29th April as we move the gateway to it's new home. We'll try and keep it as short as possible but it may last up to 10 hours.

All posts will be queued and sent once the gateway is back online.

    Apologies for the inconvenience.

    [info]dan_lane: UK Voiceposting

So I've just fixed a really nasty bug on the UK Voicepost number I setup... so you would all be doing me a huge favour by making some voice posts and telling me if you have any problems.

08444 848 008 (you can set your voicepost settings here).

Calls are charged at local-rate but in the coming weeks I plan to put up some geographical numbers so those of you who call in from mobiles can use your inclusive minutes ;)

    Enjoy.

    [info]dan_lane: 83300 Shortcode

Please be aware that LJ on 83300 is NO LONGER WORKING, I do not anticipate it returning as I've left the employ of the company running that shortcode.

    Apologies for the short notice.

You can still use SMS_To_LJ by using the long number: 07890 716 820

    Thanks

    [info]dan_lane: LiveJournal Voice Posting

Unrelated to SMS, but might be useful for some of you:

A while ago I setup a number through some random online service I found so that people in the UK could make voice posts without dialling internationally... except it was a horribly flakey and expensive service (I think it was a 10p per minute number).

Well, now I'm in a position to provide a more stable voice post number...

    08444 848 008
Calls are charged at local-rate (usually 5p per minute).

This should be quite reliable as it uses my own voice platform, if you get any problems you know where to reach me
