Reactions To SLC Library Pipe Bomb.

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=493782&comments=true

I am always disappointed with the inflammatory and bigoted comments that come forward through the individuals that post on KSL's Comment Board.

An overall theme that resounds again and again prior to this incident and especially after the incident is a blame towards the homeless people of Salt Lake City. This, being despite there being no viable evidence towards this end as of yet if it was a homeless person that commited the pipe bomb placement act. And what if it is? What if it was a black man, a spanish man, a woman? Would we continue looking at them as our scape goats?

This has nothing to do with sociol standing, race or sex and everything to do with some shameless individual looking to get attention.

If we close our library doors to the poor, we close our doors to everything that the library stands for and could ever be.

A few changes on the horizon.

As many of you know and some of you don't know, it has been Amenesty week at the SLC Public Library. This is because the library wants materials back so others may use the library more readily and because some policy changes are occuring.

Gaming at SLC Lib?

The Ann Arbor Public Library has gaming programs (such as tournaments) which draw a demographic of teens who are often absent from the library. Along with the gaming programs, the library makes books available which appeal to gamers (books with gaming plots, etc.)

The SLC Public Library is interested in implementing something similar. What games do you think would work best for this project? How do you think it would be best set up?

SLC library system to go 'gentle' on the slackers

By Heather May
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_4129168

You may want to return those overdue library books and make good on those fines.
Salt Lake City's library system is hiring an outside collection agency for some muscle.
But bounty hunters collecting library booty this isn't.
Instead, the library hired an Indiana company noted for its "gentle" approach. Plus, the city won't be referring culprits to credit agencies - even if they spurn the collection agents' attempts.

Salt Lake City Public Library - Library of the Year

Where Democracy Happens—Library of the Year
By John N. Berry III — June 15, 2006
Thomson Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year: Salt Lake City Public Library

http://libraryjournal.com/article/CA6341871.html

The building was the catalyst. “The affirmation of the bond issue vote was huge, with its 68 percent approval margin,” says Nancy Tessman, director of the Salt Lake City Public Library (SLCPL). The vote was in November 1998, and the new building opened in February 2003, a magnificent creation of the team led by internationally celebrated architect Moshe Safdie. Now, nearly four years later and thanks to zealous comment and active participation by citizens, the spirit and attitudes engendered by the new library grow stronger and deeper with every new service, event, or partner the library adds.

If the gorilla were so smart, you'd think he'd know that he doesn't
need to rob the library, they'd let him borrow the books for free.

SLCPL: The Downtown Place

Image hosting by Photobucket

The Downtown Place Grand Opening on April 6, 2006

The Downtown Alliance has opened a new information
center in The City Library's Urban Room. They also
have released a unifying mark that will be used to certify authentic
downtown events, promotions and products. Both items coincide with the
most impressive period ever of investment in Utah's capital city. More
than $1.6 billion will be invested during the next five years in
downtown Salt Lake City – more in a shorter period of time than has
ever occurred. The mark will be used to celebrate this investment and
unify downtown, at some level, as a single product. Residents and
visitors will see the mark right away in new materials and places
promoting downtown Salt Lake City like the Downtown Guide (a listing
of restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries, retail, entertainment,
financial institutions and other services), street banners and the Web
site www.downtownslc.com,
the premier Web site providing downtown information and event listings.

Phone number:
801-524-8240

Located at:
The City Library's
Urban Room
210 East 400 South

The Downtown Place is open seven days a week:
Mon-Thurs from 10:00am-7:00pm
Fri-Sat from 10:00am-6:00pm
Sun from 1:00-5:00pm

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to [info]slclibrary.

I made this community because more interaction needs to occur from what the community desires, and what the library provides.

By creating an environment that promotes an open dialog forum, it is my hope that the community as a whole can grow, as they help grow the SLC Library.

In growth, I refer to not numbers, but rather, community interaction.
