Picture posting...

  • Jan. 12th, 2004 at 4:22 PM
It's been almost two weeks and I haven't heard anything new about the suspension of [info]suicidegirls, although I think we can all safely assume that it had to do with insufficient policing of minors, and the lack of attention toward getting it reopened is either due to a) the consistent lack of attention the "new management" always paid to the community, or b) intentional neglect.

Either way, I know that I am not alone in having enjoyed all the appropriate photos that were posted in that community before its untimely demise. As others have said before, it did have problems with "bullshit posts" and underage images, but both of these can be avoided through various means.

Getting to the point of my post here... I have a question for the moderators as well as the members of this community. Would you be interested in picture posting becoming a part of this community as it was in its former incarnation? Would you rather a non-SG related community be created to fill this gap? Do you already know of another, similar community that you'd recommend to replace it? I'd like to take some action here, please let me know the best way to do it. Whether that is asking people to post pics here, joining another community, creating one of my own, etc.

I have to admit, all those pretty pictures made for some nice filler in-between the sometimes wordy posts on my friends list. I miss them! I've checked out a couple other communities, but haven't found one that I liked as much yet.

there are actually two new sg communities
[info]sg_version2
[info]suicide_girlies
both are having/will have problems cause apparently they seem to attract more minors than adults.

Thanks for the response. I checked them both out, it seems like [info]sg_version2 is doing better so far. Of course, they're unlikely to get shut down if they do a better job of keeping minors out, but who knows... that's sort of why I thought to start my own.

Rather than start a third community I guess it's best to watch what happens with those!

My ideal community wouldn't have anything to do with SG or mention it at all, but would have images like the old SG community. Sigh, hard to find.

I am a mod at [info]suicide_girlies, the "new" SG LiveJournal. Feel free to join if you were a part of the old SG LJ.

Have to admit, after glancing over them earlier, I chose to join [info]sg_version2 just based on who was already there and the number of people (100+ as I'm writing this)...

I suppose I could join both, I'll keep checking back. I'd rather not get 2 of every pic though if people are crossposting.

p.s. if you're a mod, take a look at what everyone else is saying on this post.. the minor/underage stuff seems to be a big issue!

Yeah! I consider you one of the people I'm so happy to have stumbled upon as a member of that community. I really enjoy all of your posts!

In fact, it was seeing your picture in this community that drove me to ask the questions that I did here. So... thank you :)

I have an SG membership, I was digging the SG livejournal and I'm lucky enough to be involved with a gorgeous SG-esque hottie here in New York. So I'm all about the SuicideGirls.

But...to be honest, underage posts piss me off because it shows a lack of consideration. I don't want to be paranoid and check the userinfo of every post, but then again, I don't want to end up like the Jesus in the Big Lebowski because I checked the SG livejournals.

I thought sg version2 was keepings its member rolls 18+, but I just clicked over there and at least one post is from a 17-year-old. That's not cool, and the journal won't last for long with that kind of thing going down. My apologies if my opinion upsets anyone, but it's basically on point.

underage posts
Well, two thoughts here. First, I don't think anyone in this thread said underage posts were okay. I know that on [info]sg_version2 at least, steps are being taken to remedy this, but who knows how experienced the mods are at being adult community moderators. It may take a little time to get ironed out. If not, the community will be shut down before long and someone else can try. Plenty of adult communities exist on LJ without these problems, no reason an SG LJ can't do the same with the proper care.

Secondly, your qualms about accidentally seeing a 17 year old naked remind me of another familiar but baseless fear: homophobia. It's the old "If I see/do/enjoy (fill in the blank), does that make me gay?" Jesus was having sex with eight year olds. Eight year olds, Dude. If seeing a picture of a 17 year old young woman starts you on the road to fucking 8 year olds, seek help now before it's too late.

I'm not arguing that they belong there, or that they are okay, just that your having seen one isn't going to destroy your mind.

Re: underage posts
actually, I think Suicidegirls more than any other altporn site has a younger audience. sure, it's the men in their 20's and 30's that pay allt he fees, but the big audience that carries the name and even orders the tshirts, is underage girls. they have placed ads in magazines and on websites where half of the readers/visitors are underage, like Bust, Spin & myspace. look at other adult sites, they do not place adverts outside the 'adult world'. the only other site I know that does this is Supercult but it doesn't seem to have gotten such a big following as Suicidegirls.

that means all these young girls see suicidegirls as being the cool club for pretty alternative chicks without ever having been able to see the full content of the site. as you can see all over the web, they aim to become suicidegirls when they become of age because it's the Miss America title of alternative girls. until that day, they will post their pictures on every board and community that has something to do with Suicidegirls because it's better to be linked to that name unofficially than not at all.

interesting
Yeah, that definitely seems to be true.

I guess all the communities here on LJ can really do is watch people's birthdates and keep minors from joining.

Re: underage posts
Agreed. My eyes roll into the back of my head everytime I see someone post things like "Do you think I'm good enought to be a Suicide Girl?" or "I'm waiting in agony for my application to come back!!" as if being deemed worthy is the highest throne of beauty there is.

It's funny how this was all supposed to break the standards of typical porn and I guess in a sense it did. But at the same time I think it has created some new standards that need to be broken just as badly as the old ones did.

"DO YOU THINK IM GOOD ENOUGH TO BE AN SG?" oMg i hate that question sooo bad, sure i was there once, wishing for compliments and the heck but it just pisses me off now... and altho i was like that and i can understand insecure girls asking for compliments posting on an sg group asking "am i good enough" i.e. "do you think im hot" just seems so stupid!

ah rant over....

Re: underage posts
"Eight year olds. Eight year olds, dude." Hah. What a great movie.

But seriously, I'm not talking about underage photos "destroying my mind" -- I'm talking about legal consequences (thus the bit about having consideration for other community members). "The Jesus" thing was a joke. BUT, I work in a job (print media) that has afforded me the opportunity to spend a lot of time with cops at all levels of law enforcement, and if you think they're lax about this sort of thing, you've got a lot to learn.

And bringing up homophobia as a metaphor just doesn't make sense, particularly if you're using assumptions to make a point about not using assumptions.

$0.02. One.

clarification
I misunderstood what you meant. You're right about legal consequences; nobody wants to be accused of being into underage stuff—even moreso since, in a sense, we're being deceived into looking at it by it appearing in an adult community!

As for the homophobia metaphor, you're right that it doesn't make sense in the context of what you meant. What I meant to compare, though, was the following two statements:
"If I see a guy naked, does that make me gay?"
"If I see an underage girl naked, does that make me a pederast?"
I've heard the first one, and I thought you were trying to say the second. BUT it's irrelevant since the latter isn't in fact what you meant, you were concerned about legal issues. So, again, my mistake. Apologies!

Re: clarification
It's all good, man, I wasn't completely clear in my first post.

Hopefully this stuff gets worked out and someone can maintain a strictly 18 + community.

One.

Hi. Mod here. Old mod of the original [info]suicidegirls (I was [info]turnsmileshift at the time the great revolution happened), probably standing as the only one here for a few months due to [info]glitterbec being in and out in England ... *sniff, sob*, I miss her.

Anyway. Problem number one with [info]sg_version2: they are using SG's copyrighted logo as an icon. Unless they got express permission for that, they will be asked to remove it ASAP, or they will probably run into one of the same problems we did.

It is good that they are running it with birthdate checks, however.

I watch the communities very carefully. I did with the old one, and I do with this one. I don't really have a problem with picture posting at all, provided it is acceptable to LJ's ToS; however, it seems to me that, for the most part, this community has taken a bit of a different route, as a "safe" place for deviants and cynics and questioners.
... on that note, we're pretty too, and I certainly, certainly don't mind seeing that.

P.S. When [info]suicidegirls was started, we had NO IDEA it was going to turn into a picture posting community. It was a surprise to us that that's what ended up happening.

Hi, I remember you. I joined this community pretty soon after you started it. Thanks for your response.

I noticed the SG icon too... no offense to the mods over there, but geez, hello?

Were/Are you disappointed that the old SG community turned into pictures? Did you hope for more of an environment like this community has, for discussion?
[info]pragmatix wrote:

Well, I didn't start it. [info]glitterbec did. But I was there from the moment she created it, as we'd spent the night before picking through the site (mind you, when we started it, the newest SG was ELARA. Yep. Crazy oldschool.)

I wonder how long it will take for them to remove the icon.

I wasn't disappointed. In the beginning, when that community was only as big as this one, I was actually quite impressed by the quality of photos that were being posted, and excited that our site was turning into a sort of "open" spinoff of the site we were fans of.

It took about a year and two months for the site to try to shut us down. And then they did so, successfully, by blindsiding us. We lost it because of a dirty trick that was pulled. Joke was on us, and it was taken away.

I am very happy that this is being used for discussion, because I think this is needed. This is, right now, the first and ONLY place for completely open opinions about the site. I don't mind this being a mix of both at all.

personally I would really hate to see this community turn to a picture posting one. I love how it is discussion oriented and not run by SG so people can be honest because at times I think it's really important for people to see the things that SG does so people can start supporting small less known sites.

I just think there are enough picture posting communities and that this one has no need to turn into yet another one plaguing my friends page.

I think this community should stay discussion only... but I do like how other sites can post in it to get going because as I was accepted on SG and became so unhappy from being flaked out on I constantly look for different sites to model for and support.

I think this site is too sophisticated to turn into a picture posting community and personaly I cringed when I saw all the pictures starting to be posted here

I'll be taking that into consideration - thanks for making your opinion known. Some things are being considered, such as a request to LJ-cut ALL photos, so we'll see how things go.
