Back to school time - that means those stupid Food Network commercials featuring Ray's culinary delight, "lunchbox sushi". GROSS!!

I'm offended and I'm not even Japanese. Did you see that ranch shit oozing everywhere? Every kid I know would chuck that in the garbage bowl without a second thought.

I just saw that commercial tonight and thought I was going to hurl. The dressing was oooozing out of the tortilla and she played if off like it was normal. Nasty.

I believe her "kid version" of sushi was as follows:

Take a spinach tortilla (WTF) and drizzle ranch dressing on it (WTF) and then put some white rice on it (OMFG WTF) and then narrow slices of cheese and ham and red bell pepper...I couldn't have possibly thought of something more disgusting if I sat and thought about it really hard.

...oh yeah, WHAT THE HELL MAKES THIS SUSHI???? I think of you asked someone what the defining characteristics of sushi are, they would mention Fish, Rice, and Seaweed, and she only has one of those, which pretty much applies to any cusine. It's closer to being some vaguely Tex-Mex wrap shit more than it even mildly resembles sushi. IDIOT. God I hate her.

Sushi, by definition, does not have fish.

Wikipedia entry for sushi

It does mention that sushi refers to a range of food made with vinegared rice, if you want to get specific, but I meant culturally, and in the US, sushi is pretty widely acknowledged as being seafood. And judging from how much Miss Idiot Ray dumbs down everything for her audience, I highly doubt they would question whether she was using vingegared rice vs. Uncle Ben's instant white rice, or what sumeshi is.

The sushi I like the most contains no seafood. I hate seafood but I love sushi.

And that's fine for Racheal Ray to dumb it down, she's an idiot, but you guys should know better.

(please also note that Wikipedia entreis should be taken with pillars of salt--they contain more inconsitencies than anything else)

I know not all sushi has fish, I meant, that in order to define something as sushi, one would have to suggest that one, two, or three of the above (fish and/or rice and/or seaweed) would be in the ingredients (but in her context, rice doesn't count cause she slopped it up with ranch dressing and other crap). Had she added some pickled daikon radish or perhaps even just cucumber or some nori or whatever, I wouldn't have denied it its' inherent sushiness. Seafood-less sushi is in the minority, but I wouldn't not call inari sushi because it has no meat.

/End public display of complete food dorkiness

[As far as (free) encyclopedias go, Wiki's pretty accurate and broad, in my opinion]
