Snowflake shadowbox Oct. 12th, 2008 @ 06:57 pm
[info]head_shrinker

I'm still making things to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This time, I'm preparing for the Festival of Trees, where decorated trees and other art-type things are auctioned off. (I'm decorating a small tree, too...with origami :-D )

I really loved the different designs this snowflake goes through as you fold it, so I made a progression with the model, and put them in a shadowbox. (Picture isn't great, but it was really hard to photograph this and get a clear picture through the glass with detail.)

The link to the diagram is here, if you want it.

I might have to make one of these for myself...

I'm sure you all understand, I updated my origami page on my website. Now rather than being just a few pictures of some cranes, I scanned a bunch of old photos and gathered up the digitals and made a whole page telling the story of my lifelong interest in origami. Lots of pictures of course...though still many more pictures I need to take once my camera's battery is recharged...but this will have to do for now :)

I picked up a pack of double sided foil at JapanFest. I haven't seen this configuration other than homemade before, so I thought I would post about it.

My package contained 19 sheets (one with a crease in it) in six* color combinations. They are exceptionally square, advertised as 5 7/8" but really 150mm according to my ruler, well within .1mm tolerance (I actually can't detect any variation).

I paid $6.75 from Washi Accents, a site based in Atlanta that used to have a store but now just sells online and at conventions. The same pack is $6.99 at fineartstore.com.

* - gold/red and gold/green are represented twice in the photo

Shipping lucky stars? Oct. 6th, 2008 @ 06:55 pm
[info]shindou_wannabe
Hey all! I'm new and just have a question. I made a ton of origami lucky stars for a friend back home and am looking for a cheap/safe way to ship it since I don't have a lot of cash. I was wondering what would protect it best. Do I need a huge box? I know the USPS sells boxes that fit CDs which looks like the stars would fit in it but would the box get crushed? I dunno. I just want to see if anyone else has experience/advice on shipping origami made items. :D

Last June, my uncle Ian married his fiancee Rachel. Now, the general idea of wedding presents is that the happy couple receive all the stuff they'll need for their home. But after a certain age, you tend to have enough toasters and facecloths and things, and anyway they're both at the stage where they'd rather have less clutter tahn more. So I designed these units, called them Rachelian units, and presented them with their very own origami. They were gracious enough to say they liked it very much. They're rather fun, actually - quick and easy to fold, fairly easy to assemble, and stable in all sorts of combinations. *Edit: the origmai, that is. My relations are certainly fun, but I don't know about the stability or the ease of assembly*

I've a feeling I was trying to do something completely different when these turned up. But I can't now remember what, and they're kind of fun, so here you go.

» Flattening wrapping paper
Thanks to a combination of being bored at work and working across from a stationary store, I've gotten into making origami out of wrapping paper. But most of the good wrapping paper comes on rolls and getting it to lie flat is rather a challenge. I'm currently experimenting with unrolling it and re-rolling it "inside out" and leaving it that way for a couple of days, but while I'm waiting for that I thought I'd check to see if anyone here had any magic solutions.

I picked up a pack of 3 inch foil (4 colors) last night and I decided to make an arabesque again.

» Jong ie Nara paper?
I'm a big fan of those little packs of 200 pieces of 50x50mm patterned paper that the Jong ie Nara company makes. (example: http://www.opane.com/orflorcran1a.html) When I was in high school, I built up a giant stash of this paper after finding a place that sold them for $0.50 a pack if you bought enough of them, but eight years and a number of moves later, I'm almost out. I googled them this morning hoping that either Jong ie Nara or whoever their US Distributor is would have put up a decent web site by now, but no such luck. The site that used to do wholesale pricing doesn't seem to any more, and while it's not like $1.00 a pack at Opane is exorbitant, but I just want to check before I ordered to see if anyone else knew where to get it cheaper and in bulk.

I just never thought to look on YouTube for origami videos until I started looking for a way to fold the wrapper for my chop sticks into a dragon. I ended up finding a bunch of other stuff instead. However if anyone is interested I put the videos I found behind a cut. )
» Looking for a pattern
Hello.  I'm new to this community.  I've been folding for quite a few years now; I tend to prefer simple, elegant designs as opposed to those that have you inside reverse folding through ten layers of paper by the end and end up cramped and wrinkled.  I read somewhere on the net that a folder named Valerie Vann had a design called a Magic Rose Cube, a box that opened up into a rose.  Does anyone know where I could find the diagram for this?
