Internets: 95 % porn, 4 % Dark Knight, and 1% Fanboys $#@%^ over teaser trailers 12:14AM / 23.07.2008

kiefers

Non-stop spoilers and teaser promos are big hits in the blogosphere. But where does the excitement stop and the advertising start?

The internet has turned film fans into drooling junkies, trawling the ether for ten second snippets of yet-to-be-released pictures. It happened in the run-up to The Dark Knight. It's happening with Catherine Hardwicke's adaptation of vamp saga Twilight and the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, both of which are out at the end of the year. And it's already brewing with Terminator: Salvation, which isn't due out until spring 2009.

Setting aside the question of whether the dystopic franchise has already been destroyed thanks to the travesty of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the wanton act of vandalism that was The Sarah Connor Chronicles, what do teaser trailers do for the audience? At best, they indulge us with an intriguing line or a spicy plot hint. At worst, they are like that Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. It promises to be the bleakest adaptation so far (although I bet they still won't touch Harry's Draco fixation); therefore we get a clip so literally dark that there are no strong images at all, just a black screen, one line of dialogue and the title rendered in silver-grey. Thrilling.

In the case of Terminator: Salvation there's a shaky montage of tepid shots that have long passed into the mythology of the series: the human skull being crushed by the symbolic machine foot, the vibe of military-industrial paranoia, the hulking silhouette of a human-detecting machine rising above the horizon.

Nearly every one of these shots could have been created from outtakes of the previous films and the TV series. The trailer becomes nothing more than the harbinger of yet another degradation of what was once a daring, feminist, technologically-apt marvel. It must be said that science fiction and fantasy fans, being tech-minded, are already very net-friendly and therefore susceptible to the lure of teasers and spoilers.

They've been living out their video-streaming, info-sharing, virtual reality-occupying, bitmapped, multidimensional avatar personality fantasies since the earliest days of cyberpunk theory and role-playing Amstrad games. It's only a short step from reading a blog to finding yourself awake at four in the morning, watching Smallville fan videos on YouTube. The internet makes it easy for fans to isolate and magnify their obsessions.

Getting stuck into a Buffy or Battlestar Galactica forum can make you feel as though that's the only thing which exists. Your obsession is shared and encouraged by others, a parallel dimension unfolding in realtime; you all experience the same group delusion. If you're a fantasy fan, these urgent narratives (whether technologically flavoured or not) have a conceptual, allegoric density which flimsy real life just can't provide.

Producers know this. Sure, it's nice of them to go onto the net, feed us a few crumbs from the cutting room floor and scour the message boards to tailor their work to our dorky requirements. But this isn't about narrative integrity, it's about money. Imagine millions of people speculating feverishly over some deliberately unrevealing footage of some cruel but cool robot killing machines from the future. When the film actually comes out they'll be so keyed up that they'll race to the cinema on the opening weekend. And however much I complain, however rubbish I know Terminator: Salvation will be, come spring 2009 I'll be first in line.

Terrence apologizes to Rocsi 12:09AM / 23.07.2008

swagoutthawazoo

Everyone keeps asking “What happened on 106 and Park yesterday?”, so here it goes: Yesterday on the show, Mario was on as a co-host with Rocsi. As they came back from a commercial break Mario presented Rocsi with flowers to which Rocsi said “Thank You! You are so sweet!” Mario then reveled  that the flowers were not from her, but from Terrence and proceeded to read her the following letter:

Dear Rocsi,

You and I have been together for two years and in that time we’ve become family. But sometimes we foolishly take family for granted and sometimes with family we take it too far. So let me say my dearest Rocsilla, I took it too far that Friday with my comment and I hope that you will forgive me. You are one of the most beautiful, talented and ambitious people I know and even the idea that I may have hurt you with my teasing has made me sad. From the bottom of my heart I hope that I will never ever ever hurt you again. It’s just not the same. A strong man needs a strong woman, so Rocsi please continue to be my rock. I have to take some time off from the show now but I hope to see you soon.

Love Terrence

Rocsi took awhile to respond so Mario was about to go into a video to give her time to think about her answer but she says “no, i’m cool. I love my brother”. So there you have it. Ya’ll can choose not to believe the “Real Scoop I dropped on Rocsi and Terrence” but I have some very credible sources and they don’t include Terrence’s publicist (she can call me though if she wants..haha)

Check out Rocsi Walking Off The Set Here...

Brooke Hogan has broken off ties with her ~*~amazing~*~ mom 12:07AM / 23.07.2008

lasombradeti

NEW YORK — Her parents are in the middle of a tawdry divorce, her brother is in jail and she's cut off contact with her mom because of her mother's teenage boyfriend. It would seem that with all the drama engulfing Brooke Hogan these days, the last place she'd want to be is in front of the cameras.

But the statuesque starlet was eager to sign up for her own reality show, VH1's "Brooke Knows Best," despite — or perhaps because of — her family woes.

The Hogans had been depicted for four seasons on "Hogan Knows Best" (also on VH1) as Hulk Hogan's loving, tight-knit clan. But over the last year, the superstar wrestler, whose real name is Terry Bollea, and his wife, Linda, have had an acrimonious split, while their son Nick Bollea serves an eight-month sentence after pleading no contest to causing a crash that seriously injured his friend.

And if that wasn't enough fodder for the tabloids, the romantic lives of Brooke's parents (he has a new girlfriend, she's dating a 19-year-old) have made them fixtures in the gossip pages and blogs.

Despite it all, Brooke, 19, has maintained the bubbly, wisecracking persona that she embodied on "Hogan Knows Best." Dressed in a clingy red halter-top, long black gaucho pants and wearing her long blond hair in a ponytail, the striking Hogan (and budding pop star) talked about how she has been coping with the turmoil.

Ted Danson relishes first post-`Cheers' Emmy nod 12:01AM / 23.07.2008

_aboutaboy

NEW YORK (AP) — Ted Danson is relishing his first Emmy nomination since "Cheers."

In a remarkable run, Danson was nominated 11 years in a row for each season of the beloved Boston bar comedy, winning twice and mixing in another nomination for the 1984 TV film "Something About Amelia," in which he played a father suspected of incest.

But the 60-year-old Danson will be back at the Emmys after being nominated as a supporting actor for his work on the FX drama "Damages." Danson says the honor has more meaning this time around.

"When you're younger and you get nominated, there was part of me — I don't know if I took it for granted — but now it's a very rich experience," Danson told The Associated Press. "This is really lovely."

On the FX show, Danson plays Arthur Frobisher, a billionaire CEO who's the target of a class-action lawsuit. He and lawyer Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) are intense adversaries in a legal battle with Hewes representing employees who lost their savings when Frobisher's company went under.

This part is kind of spoiler ish for those that haven't watched the series yet )

Danson is nominated alongside William Shatner ("Boston Legal"), John Slattery ("Mad Men"), Michael Emerson ("Lost"), and his "Damages" co-star Zeljko Ivanek, who portrays Frobisher's cunning lawyer.

TBH I just wanted a reason to talk about Damages... I just finished watching the entire first season in a week and I really enjoyed it. BUT I kind of hated the flash backs only because they were really repetitive... something like that works fine in a movie like Memento but in a series it kind of gets tiring to deal with.

Anyone else on ONTD watch Damages?

Whedon Reshooting ‘Dollhouse’ Pilot

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Joss Whedon has decided to shoot a new pilot episode for his Fox drama “Dollhouse.”

In a post to the fan Web site Whedonesque.com, Mr. Whedon said that, while he’s happy with how the original pilot turned out, it wasn’t the perfect template to introduce viewers to his concept.

“I’m very proud of the ep we shot and the series is making me crazy with the excitement,” Mr. Whedon wrote. “But I tend to come at things sideways, and there were a few clarity issues for some viewers. There were also some slight issues with tone. I was in a dark, noir kind of place (where, as many of you know, I make my home), and didn’t bring the visceral pop the network had expected from the script. The network was cool about it, but not sure how to come out of the gate with the ep.”

Because of the changes, Mr. Whedon has decided not to screen scenes from the “Dollhouse” pilot later this week at Comic-Con as originally planned. He still is scheduled to meet with TV critics Tuesday afternoon on the Fox lot.

Mr. Whedon said the decision to shoot a new first episode was entirely his own and said he’s not simply being “a good soldier” by making changes.

“The network truly gets the premise (this is a whole new crew, as you know), loves the cast, is excited about the show,” he wrote. “But they’re also specific about how they want to bring people to the show and I not only respect that, I kinda have to slap my forehead that I didn’t tailor my tone and structure to the network’s needs, since that’s something I pride myself on.”

William Moseley and Anna Popplewell cross swords at the German premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at the Kaltenberg Medieval Festival on Tuesday in Kaltenberg, Germany.

Moseley, 21, and Popplewell, 19, play brother and sister (Peter and Susan Pevensie) in the fantasy film. Also missing in action was the other Pevensie sibling, Edmund, played by Skandar Keynes.

That’s nice, but where is Ben Barnes, aka Prince Caspain??

Sienna’s much-publicized affair with the 33-year-old Brothers & Sisters star (and heir to a $50 billion oil fortune) prompted his fashion designer wife Rosetta, 37, to flee the country. She said she felt “humiliated” by his behavior.

Naomi says: Supermodels are no longer

Along with Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, she was one of the original supermodels.

But Naomi Campbell reckons that golden age is over.

And the new wave of fashionistas such as Agyness Deyn and Lily Cole have a lot to prove.

In fact she believes the only model currently worthy of the title "super" is Brazilian Gisele Bundchen - former squeeze of Leonardo DiCaprio.

"I think the term 'supermodel' gets thrown around too much nowadays," says the catwalk queen.

"Models need to earn their stripes - I just think the term is used a little too loosely.

"Kate Moss is obviously a supermodel but after Gisele, I don't think there's been one."

Naomi - who was chosen to be on the cover of Vogue Italia's All Black issue recently - also reveals that her pal Kate doesn't actually like the catwalk!

That's why the Streathamborn stunner hasn't lined her up to appear in the Fashion For Relief charity runway show Naomi organises each autumn.

"Kate hasn't walked down the catwalk for years," she says.

"She never really liked the shows so I won't be pushing her to do it this time around.

"But it'll be a brilliant do and I cannot wait."

During the day Naomi also divulged that when she was recently arrested following a Heathrow T5 luggage row Victoria Beckham was one of the first people to offer her support.

"I speak to Victoria pretty regularly about normal mundane stuff," she says.

"When I was going through my hard time recently she was immediately on the phone, asking me how I was doing and saying, 'I hope you're well.' "She was very sweet.

"We share girl stuff and she is so funny - people just don't know her or get her.

"She also works incredibly hard - that girl works her a**e off. And she's a mother of three - that can't be easy.

"I really love Victoria and David Beckham."

Dr. Horrible Sequel In the Works? 11:09PM / 22.07.2008

shangri__la
Image and video hosting by TinyPicDr. Horrible may have closed free viewing of its three acts today, but that hasn’t stopped the buzz around the series from spreading. The internet musical, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day, could be modestly described as a smash hit - Whedon fans took down the Dr. Horrible site on the first day of release, and fan site Whedonesque.com voluntarily went down for a couple of days to avoid exceeding their bandwidth. As Felicia Day twittered yesterday, “Whedon fans have a knack for crashing servers!” Even on iTunes, Dr. Horrible has topped the charts for TV shows, taking first, second, and third for the three acts (which can be bought for $1.99 each, or $3.99 for all three).

Considering all this buzz, it comes as no surprise that the rumors are already starting that we could see another Dr. Horrible appearance. During a live chat with fans earlier today, when asked about a possible sequel, Whedon typed back, “It’s over! Let it go! Or, okay…. We’d love to, but it wouldn’t be simple and it wouldn’t be soon. And frankly, Neil needs to work on his singing. The voice has promise, but…” Well, our industry sources say that the chances of a sequel are higher than that and could begin shooting as early as September.

Of course, we will have to wait and see; the DVD for Dr. Horrible has yet to be released, but considering the kind of traffic the debut attracted, as well as the popularity of the iTunes release, Dr. Horrible should prove to be a profitable venture in the end, and will probably establish itself as the “sitebuster” hit of the summer. Combined with the twisted ending, we’d say that it is highly likely that this isn’t the last time we’ve heard from the Doctor and his friends in the Evil League of Evil.

UPDATE: While no public confirmation to report just yet on the sequel, Neil Patrick Harris had this to say when asked by Alan Sepinwall about what to expect: “Joss has some strange giant master plan that includes much more than a sequel. Joss thinks on a great many levels. I think we’re all giggling like little schoolgirls for a week or so and then he’ll figure out what he wants to do next.”

Remember Superman Returns? Good times. 6:49PM / 22.07.2008

mouseykins1

With one comic superhero lighting up its box office, Warner Bros. is trying to develop another potential comic franchise by acquiring the superhero project "Capeshooters," with Bryan Singer in negotiations to produce.

J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani will write the screenplay, which follows two down-on-their-luck slackers who specialize in shooting videos of superheroes. They find themselves on the run when they uncover evidence that a legendary superhero actually is evil.

The story is based on an upcoming graphic novel by Rob Liefeld, who was one of the founders of Image Comics and at one point one of the hottest artists in the comics arena.

Singer will produce via his shingle Bad Hat Harry. The company's Alex Garcia is executive producing.

Brooklyn Weaver of Energy Entertainment and Liefield also will produce in some capacity. Matt Reilly and Matt Milam are overseeing for the studio.

The news comes on the eve of Comic-Con in San Diego, where film and TV studios will roll out such fare as "Watchmen," "The Spirit" and "Fringe" for thousands of salivating genre-lovers while execs will troll for other hot comic properties.

WMA-repped Singer has a soft spot for costumed creations, having helmed two "X-Men" movies and "Superman Returns," Warners' reboot of the franchise in 2006.

Damiani and Lavin, repped by WMA and Luber Roklin Entertainment, are writers on Ryan Seacrest's KISS-FM morning show and also work on "American Idol." The first feature script, "Kamikaze Love," was on the Black List last year and is set up at Screen Gems.

Estelle Getty Remembered

'Desperate Housewives' Creator and Former 'Golden Girls' Writer Marc Cherry Remembers Beloved actress

Before "Desperate Housewives," show creator Marc Cherry produced and wrote for "The Golden Girls." Now, he's remembering the beloved Estelle Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia and passed away earlier today at 84.

"She always used to be very quick-witted; she could get a punchline out quicker than anybody," says Cherry about the spunky actress, who played Sophia Petrillo on the hit NBC sitcom in the '80s. "That's a rare talent, and she was kind of amazing, and I'm going to miss her terribly."

"She was the least actressy of anyone in the cast. She was just happy to be there. She was very grateful for what she had gotten so late in her life," he adds. "In my mind she will always be everyone's grandma."
