Do you think that the right-hemisphere abnormalities which make us NLD might also make us less likely to be affected by mob mentality and cults? I've always heard about people getting caught up in the feelings of the crowd at concerts, or political speeches, or movies - but I've never experienced it myself. That is, I've been at such events, including some where I was a fan of the artist or agreed with the politician...but I always felt very detached and distinct from the crowd. I think maybe it relates to parties, too; I'm never comfortable at them, and always feel out of place. Do you feel that way too? I wonder if that could actually be considered an advantage, in some ways. Perhaps NLD people are less likely to be sucked into cults, or to go out of control with a mob and do something stupid and awful. What do you think? |

Hi folks! We are finally on a good track of help and assistance for out 9 year old son. I have tried to use timers in the past with little to no luck. His therapist showed us these: Time Timer In an effort to save money and hopefully resources, I am asking this community if they have any of these they are not using and are wanting to sell/pass on. It is always worth asking, right? Thanks for taking note!! Here's a pic as well: x-posted. Thanks. |

We have a 9 year old son that has had some pretty intense struggles. Our family has been at wits end. The following is an entry to my personal journal. We have seen a wide range of doctors, looking for a correct "diagnosis". Not for diagnosis purposes. Simply for the right kind of help, for him and our family. I This entry is going to take me some time. I've been trying to think about how to lay this all out. So here goes nothing. ETA: We are a MONTESSORI family. I live, eat and sleep Montessori. If you don't think Montessori is the place for Curtis, I will help you to understand that it is THE BEST place for him. Please DO NOT suggest that he be put in a "normal" class room. You will NOT get a positive response. Montessori is greatly misunderstood. Also, PLEASE do not take offense to my stand on Montessori. I deeply respect everyone's opinions. Yet, when it comes to MY choices about Montessori for our three kids...... there is no middle ground. Sorry! (sorta) |

Hi, I'm actually uberwander25 I just changed journals and I rejoined just now. I posted on I'm wondering if there are places and scenes that are friendly to people with NLD too. I would think certain cities or other places may be better than others. Also maybe some subcultures are friendly towards NLD. I also found then in a few of the comments people found the LGBT scene tolerant toward quirks and the like. Just interested in what people think. |

We've talked about Heather from America's Next Top Model, right? She's the contestant this season who has Asperger's. She was interviewed by Wrong Planet, a site for people with Asperger's. I thought what she had to say is incredibly inspiring and is very relevant for us NLD people too. She truly is an amazing person! You can listen to the interview here or read the transcript: http://www.wrongplanet.net/article355.h |

Stop thinking you'll get by on your high IQ Penelope Trunk exhorts the parents of children with nonverbal learning disabilities to help them learn social skills, because a high IQ isn't enough. She is using nonverbal learning disabilities in a sense more inclusive than NLD, but it's nonetheless relevant. |

I had posted something along these lines on I wanted to see what people here thought too. I think that Asperger's and NLD have a lot in common but I don't believe that they are one and the same. Most likely they are highly comorbid and I heard that it's over half either way. In one of my books it was said to be at least 80% of all NLDers also have Asperger's. I'm diagnosed with both but especially when you look at it closer which I do I fit NLD much better. I find that the main differences are obsessive interests,empathy/emotions/realtedness and of course math/spatial skills. as well here is a test you can take I'm interested if anyone here has Asperger's as well as NLD. If anyone has thoughts on the relationship and differences between them Really anything else related... Alright then... |

Hi everyone. I came up the following ideas about shared things among those with NLD. Don't you like? sort of stuff. I would assume everybody with NLD is a major bookworm and book person but what about type of books and how much do you read? Myself I mainly read non-fiction but I read around 3 to ( in a very good month) 5 or 6 books a month. Do those with NLD share likes and dislikes about music? I love music and like everything from Folk and Jazz to Metal and Punk. I dislike music that is to popish or repetitive or doesn't express something of valve to me. I'm wondering if others with NLD are major music people/snobs. Also do you like animals especially cats? I love cats myself. So what do you love out of the above? |

Right now, I work as a substitute teacher. For several months, I have been trying to get a paraprofessional job. I've had at least six interviews, but none of these has resulted in a job offer. Earlier today, I got an idea. I've worked in the classroom of one particular Special Education teacher several times, and my days went really well. She even said that I took to the students very naturally. (They had varying degrees of Autism.) I also felt very natural and comfortable working with them. My idea is to ask her for a reference. I'm thinking that one major fault in my job search is not having good enough references. (One message I got from a district to which I did a follow-up call said "Make sure your references are strong.) Here's the question(s?) How do I approach this right? I want to do this in the socially right way. How do I respond best when she asks me when I need it? I don't have a set deadline, but would like to have it as soon as I can. |

Hi everyone. I was reading in a book called The Asperger Plus Child. It has a very good section on NLD and had some interesting ideas about emotions and NLD. It gave the example of a 1-7 scale of emotional capability. A 7 would be a great interest in emotions and a rich emotional life and a 1 or 2 would be a lack of interest in emotional matters and a more flat emotional life. I consider myself a 5 or 6 most likely. I am an emotional person inside especially internally and I am very sensitive to both others and my own emotional states but I have a lot of trouble relating all of it and processing my emotional states and dealing with them. So what about everyone here? What is your emotional life like? Your ways of dealing with your and other people's emotions? Are you very sensitive or empathy driven? |

I am considering leaving my college here in the states and actually transferring to a school in another country (I'm looking primarily at a school in London and a school in Switzerland). Does anyone happen to know offhand what kinds of rights to accomodations LD students have in Europe? I have a 504 plan, but I'm at the point where really all I'm using are a couple of testing accomodations. Does anyone know if I can still get them overseas? |

I was wondering about this. Almost all books and other things about NLD say that those with NLD have trouble with the abstract and problem solving especially when it's creative problems. I don't have massive problem with the abstract or being creative when solving problems with the caveat....The abstract or problem is verbal....If it is a spatial type of concept or can not be verbalized then I have a lot of trouble. I can do science it terms of the concepts that can be verbalized but then I can't problem solve the other stuff So...What are your skills like with the abstract and your ability to problem solve? What are you strengths with problems and learning how to deal with them? What's it like to deal the abstract for you? As an aside what subject did you do best in throughout school? Worst? Hope you guys find this interesting... |
