[info]levityinbrevity: Utah prochoicers your help is needed today!

In the midst of Utah’s $350 million fiscal deficit an extremist out-of-state group is partnering with your anti-choice Utah legislators who want to waste our taxpayer money attempting to criminalize abortion.  These legislators and their allies will be holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon, September 30, at the Utah State Capitol to talk about their hopes of banning abortion in Utah and making us a test case for overturning Roe v. Wade.

[Tomorrow afternoon these legislators, with all of their support coming from outside of Utah, will tell us all why they think we should waste taxpayer dollars on litigation to restrict women’s health and reproductive freedom.]

But we at PPAC won’t be taking this outrageous political stunt lying down!  Join us tomorrow as we protest this wasteful affront to women’s health and say NO MORE to ideological assaults on Utah women and families.  Join us tomorrow as we tell these out-of-touch legislators to move on and work on legislation that will actually HELP us, not harm us!  Join us as we stand up to this nonsense in three ways:

  • Action Phone bank:  Join us tonight as we call our pro-choice allies to turn out as many people as possible to tomorrow’s protest.  We will be making phone calls at the PPAC office (551 East South Temple) from 5:30-9 p.m. tonight.

  • Women’s Health Rally:  We want to show this small contingent of anti-choice extremists that we are a force that will not let them waste our time and money to restrict our choice.  We will meet at the Capitol in the East Building Cafeteria at 1:45 p.m. to protest this absurdity.  PPAC will provide all signs and banners.  Come help us stand up to this injustice – and bring all of your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers as well.

  • Action Phone bank: To make sure that stuff like this does not continue to happen, help us get the word out about our endorsed candidates – candidates who want to protect women’s health, not affront it.  We will be holding a phone bank at PPAC (551 East South Temple) this Thursday, October 2 from 5:30-9 p.m. to let people know how they can walk for candidates who will make a positive change for Utah families.  Call 801.328.8939 or email ppac@ppau.org to sign up for this phone bank.

This is our time – your time – to stand up and make your voice heard.  Sound the alarm!  It’s time for us to stand up for our rights – and for what is right.  JOIN US!!!

Yours in action,

METAL EMERGENCY!

Tonight is the deadline! For the past month, Town and Country Lanes has sponsored a metal bowling night, and they need a crowd to show tonite, or metal bowling will be no more!

The alley is on 8000 South State St., the event is from 9:pm - 12:30 AM! Zodiac is a phenomenal DJ, and takes requests!

Please go! I probably will have to work, and if there is no metal bowling next week, I will be PISSED!

[info]sumra: "Marijuana Compound May Fight Lung Cancer"

http://www.forbes.com/health/feeds/hscout/2007/04/17/hscout603764.html

Letter I'm about to send off to the papers, please feel free to pass this on:

Dear Editor,

According to a Forbes.com article on April 17th, 2007, "Harvard University researchers have found that, in both laboratory and mouse studies, delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cuts tumor growth in half in common lung cancer while impeding the cancer's ability to spread."
Also, "When injected into 15 mice with prostate cancer, this "smart bomb" therapy eliminated all signs of cancer -- effectively curing the rodents. Researchers at Columbia University, in New York City, said the therapy also worked in animals with breast cancer and melanomas."

Given this research, the fact that it is impossible to overdose on marijuana, the 10,000 year plus history people have with cannabis, and the effectiveness of grass as medicine for hiv, glaucoma, cancer, fibromyalgia, arthritis and a host of other ailments, we must legalize it NOW.

Is the fact that cannabis is more effective and cheaper competition for a host of multi-billion dollar pharmacutical drugs one reason why this medicine has been suppressed for so long? Is the fact that it can be made out of high quality paper with less chemicals and more efficiently than cutting down forests also a stumbling block due to its competition with the lumber and chemical processing industries? The seed of this plant is a high protein health food for crying out loud, containing all essential amino acids to the human body.

In the words of the popular politicians, "It is time for Change."

[info]sumra: Rally report/Videos of peace rally yesterday for Bush's fundraising visit

The rally was great. Easily a thousand people were there; notice how KSL starts off the story by downplaying our numbers and doesn't even mention the other speakers besides Rocky. Rocky Anderson ( http://mayor-rocky-anderson.dailykos.com/ ) delivered a passionate speech. So did Daniel Ellsburg ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Ellsberg ), Sergeant Marshall Thompson ( http://www.democracynow.org/2008/4/22/a_soldiers_peace_iraq_war_vet ), and Kathy Snyder ( http://www.michaelmoore.com/mustread/index.php?id=874 )

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=3409820

This channel, (ABC, I think) did better with the numbers and at least showed Kathy but no Daniel and no Marshall: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7pflMiRG8os

My friend and I handed out several hundred fliers on fair voting reform, Instant Runoff Voting, to the crowd, including three of the speakers and after the rally on the other side of the building, current mayor Ralph Becker.

[info]sumra: Hemp Rally Saturday the 17th!

Concerned Utah citizens realizing industrial hemp will be a boon to the economy in these

difficult times have secured a permit to gather at the State capitol Saturday, May 17th at 3:00

P.M. to organize, educate and activate the public. The crowd will then march down the hill to

the federal building to protest the 1937 federal ban on hemp production. Hemp seed is high in

protein and contains all ten essential amino acids to the human body. Hemp contains strong

fibers and useful oils and is made into thousands of products all around the world including

durable textiles, rope, paper, clothing, shoes, automobile bodies, paints, canvasses, fuel, and

even plastic bags.

Hemp has at least a 10,000 year relationship with humans. Industrial hemp is easily

distinguishable from its cousin, marijuana and does not contain enough THC to get anyone high.

There is no reason U.S. farmers shouldn't have the freedom to enter hemp into

their crop rotations. It is a plant that actually replenishes the soil it grows in. At the

rally there will be an open microphone and people are likely to speak on the above as well as

medicinal marijuana and the major problems of modern prohibition. One citizen is planning to

offer a crisp $100 bill to anyone who can show constitutional authority either in the Utah State

constitution or the U.S. constitution for a ban on growing hemp. Local band, Red Caps has been

booked for live music. There will be hemp products on display and hemp milk for the curious to

sample. Everyone is invited. Please call Daniel McGuire at 859-8730 for inquires.

[info]ozzygoddess: Nihon Matsuri.

The Nihon Matsuri Japan Festival is this weekend in Japantown, located on 200 West 100 South in downtown SLC. There will be entertainment, historical displays, childrens activities, food, vendors, and even some audience participation activities toward the end!!!

The festival goes on from 10 AM to 5 PM, but if you want to eat, come early -- food usually begins to sell out around 2 PM.

Also, if you enjoy this festival and would like to see it continue, there will be a booth raffling off airfare to Japan -- tickets are $1! The sales from this raffle are what pay for the rental and setup of Nihon Matsuri. So if you are able, that would be one of the nicest things you could do for us!

Hope to see some of you there!

I come to you all in a moment of desperation.

I'm starting public school April 1st (April Fools Day, agh!) and I'm FAH-REAKING OUT. A little background: I've been doing online school for the past couple years and basically just been sitting in my house doing nothing. It's gonna be a real kick in the ass going back to public high school and trying to get back into that groove. I could really use some help.

SO. I really need you guys on this. I want to know if any of you know any kids in Jordan High School who are non-mormon and could hook me up with them. I know no one here and it would make my situation a million times easier if there were some people I could connect with and not feel like a complete alien.

If you don't know any non-mo Jordan teenagers, what would be the best way to find some? MySpace? Facebook? I really don't want to wait 'til my first day and have to go through all that school crap and try to make non-mo friends.

I would really REALLY appreciate your help on this. I will seriously give you my first born if you can help me in any way. Please and thank you!

[info]purexxjuice:

 Hey everyone!

Well, I was doing online school but it's not the best fit for me, so I'm gonna be going back to public high school. I live in Sandy, and I was planning on going to Alta High School, but since we're in the Jordan High School boundaries, we had to go to Jordan to get a permit signed to allow me to cross the boundary and go to Alta. Well, when my mom was down there, she found out that Alta's not as awesome as we thought it was and that it's the most Mormony high school in the whole valley. Jordan is a bigger building with less students, and there's more diversity because the Jordan boundaries straddle the freeway. So we went and looked at the students as they got out today and we noticed there really is a lot more diversity at Jordan than Alta. So right now my preference is Jordan.

I was just wondering if there was anyone in this community that has been to either of these schools, or has kids there, and could tell me what really goes in, in case I'm observing this unrealistically. Are there more problems with the students in Jordan because of the diversity, and is Alta really that Mormony? I'd appreciate any and all feedback on what you guys know about these high schools. Thanks! :D
