    Universal Density of Measurement
Спасибо за две бывшие только что конференции! (организаторам, участникам!)

Ещё хочу сказать, что в субботу буду рассказывать про работу Danny Fox & Martin Hackl «Universal Density of Measurement» (2006, из Linguistics and Philosophy). На семинаре НПММвЯ в МГУ в 14:30.

Название: Аксиома плотности присуща универсальной грамматике

    (Upd.: the handout.)

    Вопрос. Почему нельзя:
    (1) *How many kids do you not have?
    (2) *I have the amount of water that you don't.
    (3) John has very few children. *He only has more than THREE (children).
    (4) и «John has more than 3 children.» не может сообщать (в качестве следствия (импликатуры)), что «John doesn't have more than 4 children.»
    ?

    В то время как можно:
(1') John didn't read many of these books. Which books did John not read?
(2') I have an amount of water that you don't.
(3') John has very few children. He only has THREE (children).
    (4') и «John has 3 children.»

    • нельзя явно увидеть в окружающем мире;
    • всегда работали в глубинах устройства языка человека;
    • когда-то были найдены и формально определены математиками и плодотворно использованы.

I have found out that my RGGU course will meet on SATURDAYS, 12:15 - 3:30 (lecture plus seminar), starting Feb 9. (That was not my preference, and I'm unhappy that it conflicts with the Uspensky-Pentus seminar at MGU, but that's the time that has been assigned to my course.)

And I have set up the web page for the course with a preliminary schedule and with links to some of the readings. The web page is here:

    International Conference: Semantics without Borders

The University of Bielsko-Biala, Poland, September 11-13, 2008.

Abstracts are due April 30, 2008 (500 word max)

Send abstracts to aturula@ath.bielsko.pl and humgin4@yahoo.co.uk

    Additional information

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE SEMANTICS WITHOUT BORDERS, BIELSKO-BIAŁA, POLAND, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 2008, I CIRCULAR

The University of Bielsko-Biala (Institute of English in cooperation with Institute of General Linguistics and Methodology of Humanistic Research) is pleased to announce the organization of an international conference Semantics without borders: morphemes, words, constructions, texts.

The conference will take place in Bielsko-Biala, Sept. 11-13, 2008. The venue will be the University of Bielsko-Biala, ul. Willowa 2.

    Dear friends and colleagues,
There is considerable agreement among modern linguists that, except for (perhaps!) phonology, meaning is central to all units and levels of language analysis. Over the last three decades we have seen unprecedented growth in the awareness of the crucial importance of meaning in both morphology, and syntax and discourse, which has been accompanied by a comparable growth in the number of theoretical attempts at explaining the semantic aspects of various phenomena characteristic of those fields of linguistic research. Of particular interest seem to be those proposals which seek to account for the emergence of meaning in terms of general cognitive and/or conceptual operations, such as schematization, metaphor, metonymy and conceptual blending. In addition, the recent advances in neuroscience have made it possible to empirically test the increasing number of explanatory hypotheses by looking at our cognitive and linguistic brain. Computer simulations have also become more and more sophisticated. Although much progress has already been made, most of us know that the real quest for answers has only just begun. The new findings and theories appear almost on a daily basis; therefore, it is extremely important that we meet and share the current results of our research as often as possible – in order to be better informed, sometimes criticized and challenged, but above all to find new stimulation and inspiration. We have no doubt that a lot of this stimulation and inspiration will also come from our plenary lectures, presented by four distinguished scholars:

    Ewa Dabrowska
    Klaus Uwe-Panther
    Margaret Winters
    Jordan Zlatev

As organizers of this conference, we hope to create a friendly and comfortable atmosphere for a high level formal and informal exchange of ideas, suggestions and results in various linguistic fields. We are a comparatively young university, but Bielsko-Biała seems to be an ideal place for this kind of meeting and we hope all the participants will not only profit from our conference because of its academic merits, but also because they find the stay here relaxing, as well as socially and culturally rewarding.

Papers are invited in the following areas of research: - semantics in morphology (polysemy of affixes, semantics of grammatical cases, conceptual integration in compounds, acquisition of morphology etc.) - lexical semantics (theories of word meaning and semantic representation, cognitive principles in historical semantics, semantic relations, acquisition of lexical meaning, etc.) - semantics of grammar (grammaticalization, construction grammar, metaphor and metonymy in grammar, acquisition of syntax) - construction of meaning in context (cognitive foundations of pragmatics, semantics of speech acts, grounding in grammar, scenarios, frames and spaces in meaning construction, body in communication, intersubjectivity, acquisition of pragmatics) - motivation and embodiment of language

    This list is not exhaustive.

Abstracts of papers (max. 500 words) should be sent exclusively by e-mail to the following addresses: aturula@ath.bielsko.pl and humgin4@yahoo.co.uk

The deadline for reception is April 30, 2008. Participants will be notified of the acceptance of their papers.

The length of the presentation will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion.

The conference fee is 150 EUROS; for participants from currency problem countries: 200 PLN. The conference fee covers only the cost of participation in the conference.

Details of payment and the registration form will be sent with the II Circular, in March 2008.

My semantics course at RGGU this semester
I've put a note in my own journal about my forthcoming semantics course at RGGU -- the main topic this year (after the usual introductory lectures) will be anaphora.  Suggestions about things that would be good to include are more than welcome. Send me e-mail with ideas, and pass the word around to anyone interested about what the main topic will be this year. Guest presentations will also be welcome from any of you who are or have been working on anaphora.

    семантический спецкурс
В этом семестре я читаю в МГУ спецкурс "Логика устройства формально-семантических теорий". Название довольно условное, и о чем будет спецкурс, можно лучше понять из официального объявления.

    Как обычно, everybody is welcome.

Все материалы спецкурса будут выкладываться на этой страничке. Сейчас там можно найти то самое официальное объявление и первый хендаут, а через несколько дней там же появится информация о времени занятий и аудитории - пока с ними непонятно.

    Translation question
What is the standard way to translate "proposition" into Russian when saying that a proposition is analyzed as a set of possible worlds, or set of possible situations, in model-theoretic semantics?
In English, a "sentence" is a linguistic expression, whereas a "proposition" is the kind of thing that can be the meaning of a sentence -- it is what all perfect translations have in common.
In Russian, I worry that предложение has two meanings, 'sentence' and 'proposition', so does one disambiguate?

Oxford Univ Press Book Sale -- suggestions, please
I just got a notice that this is the last week of an OUP Book Sale; see their linguistics books on sale here. I have sent a note around to colleagues at RGGU and MGU to suggest books that I might buy to add to their collections. (My general principle: the books that I buy officially belong to me, but they are on long-term, potentially permanent, loan to LaTyp and OTiPL as long as they are made available for students and faculty there, and (carefully) to other researchers as well, and as long as they don't start disappearing. Over the last 7 years since I began this custom, I know for sure that the collection at RGGU has been very well managed, and I suppose that the collection at MGU, which I only began contributing to in 2005 when I had a Fulbright fellowship that helped pay for books, is also well managed, though I have less knowledge of that collection so far.)
So let me ask the members of the Moscow Semantics group whether you have suggestions from that Sale list -- and if so, please make your suggestions no later than Feb 15, so I can put everything together and get an order in before the sale ends Feb 18. I  probably need to put it in on Feb 16 so that I can correspond with people in the Oxford office about it.
Later I will ask for other book suggestions, but right now please just look at this specific sale and make suggestions for books to be added to the libraries of LaTyp at RGGU or OTiPL at MGU.

извините, я с дурацким вопросом. я сижу без всех своих книг и бумажек, к тому же кажется у меня потеря памяти потому что вспомнить, что искать в сети, я тоже мучительно не могу. не знаю как так. мне нужно срочно вспомнить и перечитать все основное про разные подходы к описанию семантики вопросительных слов. кто что помнит по этому поводу, скажите, что прочитать. ничего не помню. спасибо

    Partee Спецкурс МГУ: Формальная семантика
Moscow semanticists! Here is the announcement of the course I will teach at MGU this semester. First meeting Tuesday Feb 13 at 4:55. (Lecture 4:55-6:15pm, Seminar 6:30-7:50pm) The first few lectures will be introductory, but as the course progresses, I hope to make much of it of interest to advanced students, including quite a lot on type-shifting. I will try to have things for both beginning and advanced students, in some kind of balance so that the beginning students don't become discouraged and advanced students don't become bored.
I will be happy to hear in advance about topics that prospective participants are especially interested in. And there will be room in the schedule to add more topics after we begin. I hope to see some of you there! I will be happy if some of you would like to volunteer to do guest presentations of your work in one of the "seminar" sessions.
