| Great event for women in technology |
[15 Oct 2008|02:33pm] |
Jean Bartik was one of the first programmers of the groundbreaking ENIAC computing system in 1945. She later assisted in converting the ENIAC system into one of the first stored-program computers. The women who worked on the ENIAC (like Ada Lovelace, the first programmers) were ignored when it was time to give credit for these accomplishments.
"The Computer History Museum Fellow Awards annually honors distinguished technology leaders who have forever changed the world with their accomplishments. This prestigious award distinguishes the Fellows’ role in the advancement of computing history, as well as the impact of their contributions."
Jean Bartik will be so honored this year. The night after the Fellows' Awards, she will be speaking at the museum: DATE & TIME: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 6:00 p.m. Reception - Open to all attendees 7:00 p.m. Program
Read the abstract of the program at http://www.computerhistory.org/events/index.php?id=1215467761 , register, and come and honor this woman, one of the last surviving computer pioneers of that time. Personally, I am looking forward to giving her a standing ovation. Come and stand up with me! The presentation is free to members; a $10 donation is requested from non-members, but if you can't afford it, come anyway. If anyone hassles you (they won't) tell them you're with Judith. ;)
We will also be demonstrating the Babbage Difference Engine #2 that night, so stop by the Engine (I'll be a presenter) and say hi, while you're there.

| California - Vote NO on Prop 8! |
[15 Oct 2008|04:02pm] |
This November 4th your vote has the power to influence millions of lives. The California supreme court legalized marriage for gay/lesbian couples effectively giving them access to hundreds of rights such as the right to file joint taxes, and visit a loved one in the hospital. Now extremists want to take that right away under the guise that they are protecting marriage. From who? Straight couples are not affected by loving gay couples having the right to commit to one another. Let us not put hate into the constitution and vote on the right side of history. Regardless of your opinion on the issue, please vote for basic fairness and providing 1,049 rights and benefits to same-sex couples.
VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 8! Check out the link and video below for more info on how you can get involved in fighting proposition 8! http://www.queersunited.blogspot.com

If somebody tries to sell you an older, blue, slightly rusted, Specialized Rockhopper with front shocks, a rear fender/saddlebag holder, and saddlebag.. Think a special thought for me 'cause you'll be looking at a bicycle similar to the one stolen out of my driveway this weekend. If you think it's the same one, call the cops?
Thanks!

| Ceiling collapses at Mountain View bar |
[08 Oct 2008|10:16pm] |
|
| A ceiling collapsed at a bar in Mountain View late Wednesday morning, trapping one person inside, fire officials said. A few minutes before noon the fire department received a call reporting that the ceiling had collapsed at the Alibi Bar at 1313 W. El Camino Real. The caller also reported a gas leak, Mountain View fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett said. When firefighters arrived, they found that a man had been trapped by falling debris but had already freed himself. He was treated for minor injuries at the bar and was not taken to a hospital. Crews determined that no one else was hurt, and that there was not a gas leak in the building. Building inspectors were at the bar Wednesday investigating the cause of the |

| Local women's shelter |
[08 Oct 2008|11:34am] |
Hi - some years ago, for some strange reason, I started getting the DHC Skin Care catalogue, which contains about 3 samples in every issue. I used a few but started to save the rest of them in a baggie. The bag grew and grew. Now it's out of control and I am very sure I am not going to use a fraction of these samples. But I hate to throw them out.
I would like to donate these to people who can use them. I thought of a battered women's shelter or homeless shelter, but my Googling isn't coming up with much. And I don't want to drive to San Francisco to drop these off. Is there a local option I'm missing? Thanks!

Anyone have any input on Dr. Longakit with Olive Tree Dental? I'm not looking for recommendations - unfortunately, my insurance has a short list - just wondering about any experience with her. Particularly interested in gentleness and style of communication (read: chairside manner). Thanks. :)

| Alert |
[17 Sep 2008|11:01am] |
Mountain View Police Department Investigates 18 Residential Burglaries Between the months of April and September 2008, the Mountain View Police Department has investigated 18 reported daytime residential burglaries. These burglaries have occurred between 7:00 AM. and 7:00 PM on most days of the week and throughout the city. The suspect gains entry into the residence through an unlocked sliding glass door or an unlocked sliding glass window. Each time, the suspect has taken small video and audio components, laptops, jewelry and/or money. During one of the burglaries, the resident interrupted a suspect attempting to open a sliding glass door. The suspect, realizing someone had seen him, fled on foot. The witness described the suspect as a white male adult, 50-60 years old, 5’10”, with gray hair, a thin build and wearing a gray shirt.
In addition to the daytime burglaries occurring in Mountain View, there have been several similar residential burglaries occurring during the nighttime hours throughout the city. In these burglaries, window screens were cut and removed and the suspect stole similar items to the burglaries occurring in the daytime.
The Mountain View Police Department has released a sketch of the possible suspect. Anyone who has any information about these burglaries or the suspect depicted in the sketch is encouraged to call the Police Department at 650-903-6344. Additionally, community members should be diligent about keeping doors and windows locked and should call the MVPD if they see something or someone suspicious in their neighborhood. Community members should call 9-1-1 if they believe a crime is in progress.

| Face Painter for Saturday Event |
[09 Sep 2008|05:29am] |
My neighborhood in Mountain View is having our first block party this weekend. We thought we had arrangements for a face painter for the kids, but it's not going to work out. While we have a kit and could have a parent just do it themselves, I was wondering if anyone knows of a reasonably priced (or volunteer!) face painter with some actual talent.
We have no idea how many kids to expect, so we don't want to go overboard with some big show. Most ads on craigslist seem to be a much bigger production than what we're looking for. Thanks!

| Girl, 18, goes missing outside Castro Street night club |
[08 Sep 2008|03:32pm] |
Mountain View resident Brittany Brown last seen Friday night Daniel DeBolt Mountain View Voice Staff
Photo

Police are looking for an 18-year-old girl who went missing Friday night after working the door at the Monte Carlo night club on Castro Street.</p>Brittany Brown, a Mountain View resident who just graduated from Mountain View High School, was last seen at 1:30 a.m. that night after being invited to a party by a couple, police say. The last known person to see her was an employee of the club, who drove Brittany and the couple from Monte Carlo to a white four-door Saturn parked a few blocks away. Several witnesses say Brittany left willingly. According to her mother, Victoria Brown, Brittany had never before worked at the Monte Carlo, located in downtown's old movie theater building. Police say she was not an actual employee there, but may have been helping a friend who is one. She told her mother she was going to meet a friend at the Monte Carlo, where she had gone before on "under 21" nights. She ended up making about $40 working the door, her mother said. "Brittany is very friendly to a fault," her mother said, adding that she has a "bubbly" personality. "She befriends anybody." Brittany is also an employee with the city of Mountain View. For the last two years she has worked for the city's "Beyond the Bell" program, working with preschool-aged kids after school, her mother said. Police learned about the case on Saturday after Brittany's parents brought it to their attention. A lieutenant and a detective are the case. "The longer she's gone the more people [investigators] we start to bring in," said Tony Lopez, police spokesperson. Victoria Brown criticized club owners for allegedly changing their story about what happened that night -- possibly trying to cover up, she said, for giving alcohol to the 18-year-old. She said that for Brittany to leave without telling anyone would be "very out of character." Brittany constantly communicates with her mother via text message "whether we're mad or happy," Victoria Brown said. Brittany's cell phone is dead and her credit card has not been used, her mother said. Police are still trying to identify the couple Brittany was last seen with. Witnesses told police that both are in their mid-20s. The woman is described as short and heavy-set with blond hair, and the man is 6-foot-3 and possibly a light-skinned Hispanic. Brittany is blond, blue-eyed and 5-foot-7. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to call (650) 903-6344.

If anyone is looking for a place in Park Place Apartments in Mountain View, let me know. My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving out soon, and we need replacements. It's a 3 bedroom apartment, and there are 2 other roommates. The rent is 1,200 a month. The apartment is really nice, the location is nice, and the leasing office people are friendly.
Edit: that's 1200 for a third of the apartment.

| Bank Robbery? |
[05 Sep 2008|09:27pm] |
|
I went to the B of A on San Antonio at about 12:30 and found they were closed. The sign on the door said it was because of an "emergency situation," and I heard a guard talking into his phone say "...robbery..." Later in the afternoon I went to the branch on Castro, where the teller recognized the initials in my savings book and asked if I regularly used San Antonio; it was her branch, and she told me it had, in fact, been shut down all day because "someone came in and took control of the bank for a few minutes" around 9:30AM. But I got the feeling she wasn't supposed to be talking about it so I didn't ask questions. I couldn't find anything on the news or Voice's site. Anyone know anything else about it?
