Best way to sell really expensive earrings?

This isn't pertaining to Montreal directly but perhaps someone here can give me advice.

I have a pair of stupidly expensive Birks earrings which I've received as a present several years ago that I'd like to sell, because I'm in university and poor and need to, you know, eat and pay bills (and, as a consequence of being poor, don't go places where I could wear those earrings to). I thought eBay might be a good route to go, even though I've never used it, but a few friends told me I should try to sell them locally to avoid having to pay for shipping (and also because shipping expensive jewelry probably looks super-sketchy and it's bound to get confiscated or lost somewhere along the way). My friends think I should try Craigslist and sell it locally.

Do you think that's a good way of doing it? Can anyone recommend any other websites / methods?

Where do Geeks meet?!

I'm a geek at heart and a huge science-fiction fan and I was wondering if any of you know if there's a place in Montreal where geeks meet from time to time. And please don't say the Montreal Scifi and Fantasy Association. I've been there once and I'm not even going to comment. I think the average age of  the people there was 50 years old. Is there some sort of group/organization that's younger and more dynamic?

Poutine place on Rachel

Hi Montreal!

My friend told me there's a restaurant in the Plateau (on Rachel street) and apparently they serve like, hundreds of different kinds of poutine. (Well, not HUNDREDS, but...) He can't remember the name of it and he really wants to go there on Saturday.
Does this ring the bell for anyone?

Thanks! :)

Used VHS usagés à Montréal

Y a-t-il encore des magasins qui vendent des films en VHS à Montréal? Are there still stores that sell VHS movies in Montréal? Je cherche un film qui n'est pas disponible en DVD, et, avant de me résigner à un achat par internet, j'aimerais m'assurer qu'il n'y a pas un exemplaire caché quelque part en ville. I'm looking for a film that's not out in DVD, and before trying to buy it online I'd like to make sure there isn't a copy of it hiding in a store somewhere I don't know about in town.

The only two places where I've seen (used) VHS for sale lately were in the basement of the Marché du Disque on Mont-Royal, where a couple of tapes were still gathering dust, and at the Librairie Québécoise, on Ste-Catherine. And neither store had the movie I'm looking for.

Est-ce que quelqu'un connaît d'autres endroits qui vendent encore des VHS?
Does anyone know of other places that still sell VHS films?

Le film en question, en passant, c'est Monolith (1993), avec Bill Paxton. The film I'm looking for is Monolith (1993), starring Bill Paxton. Un film de science-fiction pas très bien coté, mais que j'aimerais beaucoup revoir quand même. En anglais, de préférence, mais je cracherais pas sur une copie en langue française. It's a science-fiction film that I'd really like to rewatch even though it's not especially good. In English, preferably, though I wouldn't pass up a French dubbed version.

Clothing repair?

Hello all!

I was wondering if anybody would be able to help me out with the following problem:

I very stupidly sat on a candle last night, and burnt a hole in the bottom of my brand new dress...now luckily I managed to realise I was on fire before too much damage was done, but the fact remains that there is a rather singed hole, where there shouldn't be one.

Does anybody know where, or could recommend to me, a place where I can take my dress to be fixed? The hole is very fixable, I just have no idea where I can get such a thing done.

Thanks awfully,

Emma :)

could i ask a huge favor from you, oh montreal?

see, i'm entered in this contest on buzznet. and the winner? wins a trip to california to be a vip at the last day of warped tour. and i really, really want to win. if you have like 10 minutes to spare while you're at work or bored, think you could vote? you'd basically have to brownie the pictures, and you can only do so once per account per ip address. i'm getting all my friends and family to vote, but i'm trying to pass the message to everyone.

the link is here. creating an account is free, and takes 2 minutes, and they don't even ask you your name. i'm so grateful if you do!

ps: the rooster problem? gone. we think the owners ate it. probably after the many complaints lodged against them.

restaurants with veggie and glutin free foods

Hi!

i have a friend who is veggitarian. She recently discovered she has a glutton allergy (i.e. can't eat wheat). Does anyone know of any restaurants around guy metro or concordia university (both campuses)that has some veggie / glutin free foods? A restaurant with at least a few options for her would be nice. We used to go to a chinese restaurant in back of starbucks but they are doing renovations.
any ideas???

Something fairly cheap would be great too!

kanda sushi

Hi

I would like to go to Kanda for sushi today all you can eat dinner

I believe it is $19.99  please correct me if I am wrong.  Mon- thurs should be $19.99

I want to go the restaurant at snowdon 5240 chemin Queen-Mary.  I have read reviews on the kanda located at 2045 rue Bishop, Montréal  but what about the one near snowdon?

is it same quality and cleaniness?

seems most people go to the bishop one but I live at cote vertu so ideally i want to go to the queen mary one.

also do they have fried foods for all you can eat dinner?  Like short ribs? fried fish head?
My dad doesn't really like eating raw stuff. he likes meaty things.

Does anyone know where I might find spearmint extract? I want to be able to make mojito-ish drinks whenever without worrying if I have fresh mint in the house. I thought it'd be easy, but grocery stores only carry peppermint.

Questions about spay/neuter prices

I check the tags and didn't see this question come up. So as most posters here my concern is the cost that comes with spaying my cat.

This is the first time I actually own a cat (experienced dog owner) and I think she is of age and showing signs of being able to reproduce (she's around 6 months). So I googled around to see vet sites in mtl area and some sites are not very informative apart from contact info. Before I go calling around I wanted to know the price range for this procedure?

I am debating about this atm and it is NOT because I do not want to get her fixed. I actually do, however my rez up north provides the community once a year this service paid by the band and the time has already passed (I was still in school). So the reason I am debaiting is should I wait a year and bring her home up north for the free service or should I get this done ASAP coz we would be way better off and its worth the price??

I need some experice kitty owner input over here lol. I love my cat and want what is best for her but I live on a very limited student income and have to support a family of 5 at the same time :3

And another question? Can female cats have smelly pee when in heat? Or is it ONLY male cats? (Sorry for the newb question, but I am new at this)

Thanks in advance!

Scrabble on Sunday - NEW VENUE!

This Sunday is Scrabble time again, and if this rain lets up it will be outside in the park. (First time this year!) The twist is, it will be a different park - we're going to move to Parc Wilfred-Laurier, which is at Laurier and Mentana. Why the change? Parc Wilfred-Laurier has picnic tables, so hopefully we won't have to sit on the ground.

If it's still raining (boo!) Scrabble will be at Divan Orange, as usual.

Where: If sunny: Parc Wilfred-Laurier; if raining: Divan Orange
When: Sunday, July 27, at 3:00
What: Scrabble! Newcomers of all skill levels are welcome! Play in English or French!

Bring some food and drink and we'll make a picnic out of it! Bring a Scrabble board if you have one, just in case we're overwhelmed with people! Bring something to sit on (blankets, lawn chairs) just in case somebody's stolen the picnic tables! But mainly, bring your love of language!

salary expectations

I know this is a longshot but...

What kind of salary would one expect from a medium to large sized law firm, for working as a paralegal in a specialist field?

This is a job interacting with clients and government offices via email and telephone in order to assist in the preparation, submission and approval of the client's governmental licensing applications in a specific field.

In order to do this, one must have a bachelor's degree and type 50+wpm, in addition to the knowledge to perform the above duties.

I'm looking for a general ballpark. I mean I know it's not 70K, but surely that's worth more than 30K, no?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Story ideas?

Hi,
I'm a journalist from Toronto and I'm trying to find a few good story ideas in Montreal.
I'm looking for ongoing issues or problems happening in the city or cool things that people are doing.  And especially stuff that hasn't really been talked about in the news already.

I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks!

I realize I'm taking this lightly despite the heavy stench floating down the corridor, but my question to you is;
How long does the smell of death last in a one bedroom, semi-basement apartment?
Anyone?

really annoying automated calls

I keep getting calls from some 877 number on my cell. It calls every day and has done so for the past week or so and i don't pick it up. It leaves a VERY IMPORTANT message (tm) but it's not for me, it's for someone obviously not me. While it's not the end of my life, it's still pretty damn annoying, and if it were a /real/ person instead of some taped message, I could just pick up and straighten it out.

What can i do about it? I'm hesitant to call back because i'm not sure if it would stop them, or worse, they'd know that it's a real number and start calling me more. Can I sic Rogers on them or something? Has anyone else gotten a call from 877 367 3618? how did you get them to stop?

Dark Knight Merch.

I came across this community while searching for something. I can't find the answer anywhere else so hopefully someone can help me here. I live on the south shore and am part of the whole "Dark Knight Fuss" going on, so naturally I went to see it on the weekend. I saw a bunch of people in t-shirts that had the movie-poster Heath as Joker in full writing "Why So Serious" in red. The shirts were black. I saw tons of Dark Knight t-shirts at Zellers, D-Tox, Wal-Mart, etc. across the area but can't seem to find that specific shirt, not even online. Does anyone know where to find it for certain in the Montreal area? I am kicking myself for being too shy to ask someone wearing it. The only other place I can think of is Labyrinthe, but it costs a handful for me to get there from the South Shore and back since I take the Metro, so I only want to go if I know they carry it for sure.

Any info would be amazing, thank-you!

Clothing September

Hi Montreal!

I'm visiting your city in September, what kind of clothing will I need? Will it rain? Be cold? Sunny? I don't have an endless amount of space in my suitcase so i'd like to pack as efficient as possible! I'll be there from Sept 6 until the end of the month.

I've tried to google the weather during that month but it said it could be anywhere between nice and sunny and freezing during a storm so that didn't help :)

Thanks in advance!

How to get to.... Pittsburg?

I'm looking to get to Pittsburgh from Montreal circa Aug 2 - 6th. I'm not sure the ideal method.

The bus is gonna be something like 17 - 20 hours (WTF!!!) and won't give me a price anyway. That's a lot of time if we only have 4-5 days there.

Flying is ~ $500 round trip per person best case scenerio. But fast.

The trains don't really want to connect for me. Amtrak and Via websites are like "What? No way!" (paraphrased of course).

So yes, any advice would be welcome. I'll have to bite the bullet I guess but I wouldn't mind some advice if someone has done it before.
