My name is wedge55 and I'm a MMORPG addict [Jul. 9th, 2008|04:14 pm]

Hello fellow MMORPG addicts. Let me tell you about my latest addiction.

I've been playing this free MMORPG called Fiesta (download it here).  Yes it is a free MMOPRG.  Yes there is a premium item mall.  No it does not suck.

Like every other pay to play game out there, Fiesta has a ton of content that will keep you busy for a long long time.  There's hundreds of quests, PvP content, raiding, crafting... everything you expect from an MMORPG. But it's free! Also the GMs run in-game events every single day, so I'm always logging in to see what's up.

Given the title of the community, I figured this would be a good place to check and see if anyone else was as addicted to this game as I am.  If you are, or if you download the game and try it, message me on Pfhor on the Epith server and I'll help you out.

Take part in interesting MMORPG research! [Jun. 22nd, 2008|12:21 pm]

Hey everyone!

I am a WoW player, but I'm also a psychology student and am carrying out some research into MMORPGs.

I did some a few years ago and it got published (see Cole & Griffiths 2007 Social Interactions in Online Role Playing Games).

I now want to look at relationships that develop in these games and certain personality traits. If you have 10 minutes to spare then please take part :) It is completely voluntary and I am not being paid to do this - it's part of my degree course.

The link is here: http://ess.ntu.ac.uk/sutton/formfiles/ee208650/mscproject.htm

Thank you so much!!

Hi all! I'm a new member. I really like MMORPGs so far but haven't played many. I started with the more-than-adorable Maplestory which insanely popular among its crowd but have since moved to Japan and, being unable to play MS Global, I had to switch games. I now play Ghost Online which is a very similar 2D, side-scrolling MMORPG which adorable characters and a plot line based off of Chinese mythology. Despite the name, there are no ghosts, only souls.

It is Malaysia based but the game is in English (or there's an English version because I play in English). It's still beta as far as I know but there's new releases quite frequently, especially for the cash shop if you're familiar with cash shops.

There's several classes like Maplestory (Mage, Assassin, Warrior) as well as guilds and parties, personal shops, quests, pets and . Some of the unique features include the soul system which you can use to replenish your magic (SP), fill sealed items (used for upgrading weapons and armor), and fill your rage meter (for a strong attack for a short period). You can also choose your allegiance to Chaos (Evil) or Order (good). Check the fortune teller on a daily basic for items. You can also gain experience and make money by mining or fishing. Players will also be excited to find PVP/PK options which are a lot of fun!

Another unique feature is the newly implemented encyclopedia. The pages start blank and you fill them by collecting 9 puzzle pieces from each monster. After you add all the pieces, the page is completed and you gain experience. This also shows the HP of the monster and name when you fight it. Very cool, IMO.

There are definitely less items and less variety in items, so far, than Maplestory but I think this helps you to gain money. I find that I've made much more gold in Ghost Online than I ever did in MS though I played for twice as long and much more frequently. It's also a whole hell of a lot faster to level with much less grind. The quests really help make things go faster and more exciting.

The map, for a game such as Ghost Online is huge! Without teleporting, you'll need see it. There's several pages and, at level 31, I've only spent most of my time on the first map.

I've been realy impressed with Ghost Online so far but have found their to be a lack of English speaking players and just a lot less people to play with than Maplesytory. I hope you consider it. If you do, look for a level 21 mage named Kytana.

I Encourage You To Play This Online Game Called Starships! [Feb. 22nd, 2008|12:06 am]
mikemyles

Hi, everyone.

My name is Mike, and yes, I enjoy good science-fiction (eg. Asimov, Clarke, Dickson, Heinlein, et al), and I’m looking forward to reading, and reading about, other authors/works to broaden my horizons. I must admit, though, that I LOVE Star Trek!

I also enjoy playing Star Trek, or Star Trek-like games either online or on my PC; I don’t get to play the board or cards varieties in my neighbourhood.

However, today, I’m writing this e-mail, in all the groups I belong to. I appologize as a lot of you will receive it multiple times. My intent is NOT to spam you, truly. I do have an ulterior motive, though. The owners of the site of this online game I’m writing about are giving long-time players like me incentive to recruit.

The game is called “Starships!” I’m writing this, in part, because I’m confident that, if you give this game a try, you’ll really enjoy it if you try it.

So, go to this link and do just that; try it: http://starships-rpg.com/enlist.php?recruiter=Toronto

It’s an easy game to play. Here is the description, given by the owners themselves, that you’ll find once you access the site:

“Starships is a FREE web-based Massive Multiplayer Role-Playing Game. (MMORPG) where thousands and thousands of people share an online community. You can join for free right now! As you progress, your starship will gain abilities and increase in power. Your weapons, shields, engines and other features of your starship will gradually improve, and your opponents will become increasingly more powerful.

“Starships is written by a professional game creator of 25 years experience, so it is well balanced, planned out, and extremely fun to play, unlike other games which are poorly planned and are just after your money. Be a starship Captain! Travel to different systems exploring, battling, negotiating, partying and plundering.”

There used to be a Wikipedia.org article on this game, but I couldn’t find it yesterday, even after an extended search. There have been a few reviews about this game, though. The first review I found in a site called “MMORPG Review”. You can follow the link: www.mmorpg-review.com , or read what I pasted from their site:

“This game, released in 2004, is the LARGEST game we have encountered. It may even qualify as the largest game ever. The only comparable game (in sheer size) that we have ever encountered would posibly be the original Daggerfall:Elder Scrolls. Ship after ship, base after base, system after system. Basically, forget about exploring it all, it would take years of real time.
It's THAT freaking BIG.

“You become a starship captain and then start blowing up asteriods and other targets to acquire credits to use to buy better weapons, armor, sensors and crew. You move around human space - this is where all new captains start - and slowly but surely build up your bank account and your starship.

“As your starship becomes more powerful and useful, you can attack more powerful targets and eventually learn and earn the way into the next star system.

“At NO TIME does one need to spend real money on this game (something we always like). Everything in this game is purchasable with in-game finacials and hard work. There are a few maps floating around and dozens of roleplay and help groups to help the new captains power up their ships faster.

“With real money one can purchase fuel boosts - ap boosters for more play-time- but they are not required or neccessary to play the game (Though it's helpful because the game is addictive!). You also don't have to be a paid member to go to the other star systems as some other games require.

“This game also has an in-game communications system where players may transmit messages into subspace for all to read. This feature does cost some real money but it isnt NEEDED to enjoy this game fully. We are proud to give Starships! 5 stars.”

Another site, called “Online Game Review”, had a few reviews. You can access that site at:

www.ogreview.org

So try  this game. This is NOT spam. I really think you’ll like it!

What do you think? Runescape Vs. Ultima Online [Jul. 15th, 2007|12:01 pm]

guma_kawauso
[mood | inquisitive]

Hello. I'm new here... er... anyway, I've got a bit of an issue... no no! Not with his group! Anyway, please let me explain.

I started into a game called Runescape about 7 months ago. It was fun and entertaining, but the further I got, the more frustrated I became. for those who do not know, Runescape has a set of rules that dictates what players can and can't do, such as sell Runescape goods fro real money, or use third party programs to get ahead in the game. Also, in their discussion board, they do not enjoy people complaining about bots/macroers/gold farmers nor do they want to hear people tell them that certain skills are either over or underpowered.

Also, Runescape has two economies. One is the game run economy, in which supply will affect the price of a good. There's the player run economy where players overcharge for goods. This economic system has been exploited by gold farmers. The company that makes Runescape, Jagex, says it's dealing with the problem, but my observations say otherwise.

When I went to tell them how irritated I was because of the lack of enforcement of their rules, I was pretty much "black marked" as a troublemaker.

So, the problem is that I'm looking into a different MMORPG many already have read of, called Ultima Online.

Why that, you ask?

Well, I'm running a low-end computer. It's only got Win98, only capable of an upgrade to ME, and pretty much well.. a dinosaur. That means more popular games like Halo, Final Fantasy XI, WOW, and other such games will pretty much fry this poor thing.

But is switching worth it?

Looking at reviews on a 1-10 scale, Runescape gets about a 6.6 while Ultima Online get's 7.1. Are these accurate averages? Is Ultima Online better or worse than Runescape? As I already know a bit about Runescape, I'm interested in unbiased opinions about Ultima Online. I've already read though GameSpot/GameFAQs and I've already breezed though the Wikipedia entry. So, please, lets not direct me to there. I want your opinions. I'm also not really looking for simple answers like "Ultima Suxxors!" or other droll childish behavior. I want an intelligent and unbiased opinion. I hope I can find at least one. You can reach me at guma.kawauso@gmail.com if an opinion is too big for a response to this post.

Trickster Online [Jul. 11th, 2007|11:47 pm]

If you can get past the cutesy graphics, you'll find a really deep and fun game in Trickster Online. You have the choice of playing as one of four types of characters (Power, Magic, Sense, and Charm) and each type has two characters (one for males and one for females.)

It's really easy to level up and there are many more things to do than just level up (like drilling, which is also a fun way to pass the time! it's easy to get rich by drilling too)

I really recommend this game.
