Improvisations (Meditations) on Joanna Newsom [30 Jun 2008|12:21pm]

flyingwindows

Hello everyone. My name is Alexander.

Because I am a fan of Joanna's music, I've taken the task of arranging and transposing the vocal line for the soprano and tenor saxophones.

I plan to play and record this in a solo context. I also plan to improvise after stating the melody and then returning to it after the improvisation.

The tunes:

Soprano:

Swansea
Cassiopeia
The Book or Right-On or Peach, Plum, Pear

Tenor:
Bridges & Balloons
Sadie
Inflammatory Writ

I'll post the recordsings here.

My boyfriend introduced me to Joanna Newsom in September. It took me a little time to like her voice, but since then I've listened to her almost non-stop and have memorized all of my favorite songs. As much as I love her music, I'm eager to find some other new (to me) artists. The problem is, websites don't make good recommendations. I certainly love her music, but I think that many fans would agree that it's her lyrics that set her apart. "Similar" music with meaningless lyrics doesn't compare.

So, what do other fans listen to?

Hi there (and a request) [10 May 2008|08:51pm]

I'm going to tell you a brutal, shocking story. Several months ago, when I first heard of a young, talented artist by the name of Joanna Newsom, I had the opportunity to go to her concert here in Sydney. I did not. And I've been wanting to strangle myself ever since!

I first heard her on advertisments for Melbourne (those very big balls of string...I don't know *what* they were thinking), I thought it was 'nice' and went on my way. The next time, I must have been reading through music blogs, and there was consistent praise from everywhere I went. Who is this woman? I asked. Went to youtube. Listened to Sprout and the Bean. Mind went BOOM. And that was before I even heard Emily.

Needless to say, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for her coming back. In the meanwhile (if it isn't too much trouble), does anyone have a MP3 of JN's Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie at Jools? That was actually the second video I saw of her and after many, many plays, she still sounds beautiful.

This is a topic of great importance.

Which is the greater sweet baby song: Joanna Newsom's untitled new song about "sweet Esme" (presumed baby) or James Taylor's classic "Sweet Baby James" (definitely a baby)?!

Hello-

I remember finding recordings of Joanna's KCRW Morning Goes Eclectic Session found here:http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/gz/gz050226joanna_newsom

but since then my computer has gobbled them up. These tracks are truly gorgeous and I was wondering if anyone could record them off of the internet/already has posession of them and would be willing to upload them?

There is a particular version of PPP that she plays with just harp that is very lovely

Also- are there really no recording's of her BAM shows early this February? I attended the one February 1st and was so blown away by different versions of a bunch of songs (namely Peach, Plum, Pear...). Anyone know of some?

Thank you :D
have a great day

I finally finished re-reading all the MilkyMoon Joanna quotes. I can't believe how much our opinions are similar, whether that is her music's influence on me or coincidental I'm not entirely sure. Probably a bit of both.

What interested me was the quote on her favourite drink.

"hmm. if I had my druthers, I would only drink framboise lambic, which is a raspberry-flavored, frothy, garnet belgian ale that tastes like unicorn tears."

I developed the misconception that Joanna was one to shy away from alcohol. Mainly due to the amount of composure she maintains on stage and how seriously she takes her art and performance. But rather than discuss Joanna's drinking habits, I'm more curious on how to get my hands on a bottle of Framboise Lambic. I've never heard of it before, has anyone ever tried it? Is it readily available and affordable?

I hope I'm not violating any rules here, but I'd also like to post my call for submissions on the Milky Moon message boards devoted to Joanna Newsom. The trouble is that their registration seems irremediably screwed up, or maybe I'm just not competent, so I've never been able to sign in or register. If one of you fine Joanna fans is also a member over there, I'd be very grateful if you could copy and post my message over there too. Thanks and sorry for the p.s.

By the way, I love this site and all the art work. I've printed all the posts out (it's like 100+ pages worth) just for fun. The elf-images of Joanna are right on. I just hope my book will be right on too.

Hi everyone; I want to alert all Joanna Newsom fans that I am putting together a book of writings about the original Milk-Eyed Mender herself to be called “Visions of Joanna Newsom” (yes, the reference to Bob Dylan is intentional). I’m looking for art, gossip, essays, poems, true stories, academic readings of songs, anecdotes, and all things brilliant and bizarre related to our favorite harpist. I’ve already secured a contribution from the famous novelist and Joanna-acolyte Dave Eggers, and the book will be published through a small press that I will soon be starting up here in Sacramento. This is not just a pie-in-the-sky project; it’s real and will definitely happen.

Who am I? Well, my name is Brad Buchanan and I teach English Literature and Creative Writing full-time at the California State University, Sacramento. I’m a poet and sort-of scholar; you can read some of my poetry at my now-lapsed blog: www.miracleshirker.blogspot.com or verify my existence at the CSUS English Department’s web page: http://www.csus.edu/engl/. I’m also a board member at the Sacramento Poetry Center, where I co-edit The Tule Review, and I have a few books out there already in various fields.

My email address is buchanan@csus.edu and you may send orders of hard copies of submissions to Brad Buchanan, P.O. Box 160406, Sacramento, CA 95816.

Thanks!

yours, Brad Buchanan

So. My video of the Brooklyn show, sadly, sucked. (I have a tendency to point the camera too low when I record. This time around, I overcompensated and got a lot of ceiling.)

However, the sound quality of the recording turned out to be fucking AMAZING.

So here's a link to the recording, for anyone who wants to hear the second set on a recorder that was not in a pocket, haha. Also included are a few stills from those brief times when Joanna was actually on the screen and in focus, and the last song and encore as recorded by the person whose recorder was in the aforementioned pocket - I had two sixty-minute tapes and she played two sixty-two-ish minutes sets. (Ugh!)

Does anyone know where I can find Joanna's flower shirt online?
They were selling them for big $$$ at the concert and I figured I could find them on the internet cheaper.

The shirt is a peach color with her name written in big flowers. It's so beautiful! I would wear it even if it didn't spell out her name

:)

I know the person that runs milky moon is a member of this community or atleast reads it fairly regularly. I emailed her about the problems with the quotes database (you can't read any other quotes than the default Only Skin one, the links do nothing!) but no response and no fix. :( I've been without Joanna quotes for 6 months.

So I'm calling out, please fix the database. I don't care if you don't update anything else, I just want to read the quotes that I used to read.

Thanks, and sorry to be all needy, but there's nothing else like milky moon out there.
