 | 01:56 pm - Questions Eep, this isn't a very active community... Hope someone answers! XD I'm a junior, so I still have quite a while before I'm actually going to be applying, but I have a few questions all the same!
1) Is there a fencing club at Macalester? And if there is can anyone tell me about it? (How often do they practice, do they compete in tournaments, etc.) 2) What's the creative writing program in the English department like? Are the classes good? Is it genre-writer friendly? Is the lit mag (lit mags?) cool?
Sorry if these weren't very good questions! Thank you in advance!

 | 10:11 pm Just in case you're trying to get in touch with people at Macalester, we've been in the midst of an email meltdown since Sunday night. Try calling if it's urgent.
And yes, a new email system is going in this summer. A good one.

 | 09:15 pm - Scholarships and Cold Weather? Hi, I'm applying to Mac this year (it's my first choice), and I was wondering what scholarships are available. I've looked at them, but I was wondering what the general consensus about them were if anyone here wants to answer? I was also wondering what the usual amount of aid is for incoming students? I know it gives the amounts, but I was just wondering from actual students.
Also, I live in the South. I love snow, I live better in cold weather, but does anyone who originally lived in the South want to tell me about the cold shock? The representative tried to explain, but she came on a mild day.
I searched for these in the archives, but I never saw this (or I missed them). I'm sorry if this is a double post, and I'll delete it. Sorry, but thanks for answering.
P.S.-This is one of the first times I've posted on a community since I don't use Live Journal. Sorry if this works out badly.

 | 05:20 pm - high school senior here... My friend Katie and I are flying out to visit Macalester (and Carleton) from NY next weekend, but according to Macalester there aren't enough overnight hosts to set us up with someone to stay with, which is a slight problem as we now don't have anywhere to sleep on Monday night (the 8th). Is there anyone here who would be willing to give us a floor to sleep on just for that night? Because that would be amazing.
Thanks!

 | 08:44 pm I have a couple of questions. I'm applying to Macalester this year. My SAT scores are pretty average by Macalester standards. I'm about to take the SAT IIs, and I expect to do poorly on them (I'm only taking them because they're required at 2 schools I'm applying to). Since Macalester doesn't require the SAT IIs, will they just ignore my score, or will it count against me? Also, I was wondering where some of you guys applied as safety schools? Macalester is one of my top choices and all the other schools I'm looking at are pretty similar to it, but I'm finding it really hard to find any schools that I'd both enjoy and would be easy for me to get into. I've checked the memories, but if either of these questions have been covered or don't belong here I'm sorry and will delete this entry ASAP. Thanks!

 | 11:13 pm - Prospie Questions Hi all, I just started my senior year of high school, and I'm working on polishing my list of colleges to apply to. I only recently heard of Macalester, and I've heard everything I've liked, so I've come to you with a burning (or not-so-burning) question.
I am almost certainly going to major in science/math (not biology). I'm still undecided whether I'd prefer a liberal-arts school over a tech school, and I can see the benefits of both. I'm almost leaning away from a tech school, because I'm interested in practically everything else aside from science as well and want an opportunity to take other classes.
The Macalester website tells me that there exist astronomy, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, etc. departments. Does anyone have any experience with these, or other non-bio science at Macalester? Are there many/any science majors at all? How do the programs' quality compare with more popular majors? Is it a lost cause to think of majoring in physics here?
Any kind of related answer would be much appreciated. Current Location: Oregon

 | 03:49 pm - Wallace question: Has anyone ever lived in the obnoxiously tiny Wallace 104 (or a corresponding room on another floor in Wallace)? The floor plans are here, and the rooms are the ones on floors 1-3, right "above" the bathrooms on the right-hand side of the hallway, with the closets on either side of the door.
Apart from having absolutely no space in the room itself, I'm sort of wondering how the closet situation works in these rooms. When my roommate and I visited our future room (briefly) at the end of last year, we didn't see any desks in the room (or room for desks, for that matter), let alone a dresser, so I can only assume the latter's crammed into the closet somehow?
If you'd got any info on this or on transitioning from my pampered, spacious life in Turck, I'd appreciate it!

 | 11:20 pm - a cappella and soccer A few more questions about Mac concerning my specific hobbies:
1.I was wondering how hard it is to join the a cappella groups on campus? I used to sing at the choir at my high schol and at church but do not anymore and do not have any experience singing a cappella.
2. I currently play for my high school soccer team and although I hadn't really thought of playing in college, so that I could have time to pursue other extra curriculars which I had to forego to be able to play on the starting team, I know that I am going to miss it. Here are a few of my questions a. (imagine) I want to play for the varsity team, how hard is it to make the team and how much of a commitment is it, how much time does it take up? b. If I did not want to or couldn't play varsity what other options would there be, is there a intramural team? c. I also love to run, does Mac have an indoor track (it is going to be hard enough getting used to those winters if I end up there, I can't imagine running outside)
3. I know that it gets to be extremly cold in Minnesota and I have to admit that this makes me nervous, someone once told me that to make up for it you have really blue skies, is this true? I guess that I am worried because the weather does affect my mood. Then again I like snowball fights and it is not like I would be coming from LA but from Switzerland where it does get cold just not that cold.
4. Part of the reason that I am considering Mac is because of the urban location. I really don't want to end up in the middle of nowhere. Is it easy to go around the city without a car, I am unsure whether or not I will have one. Do students often leave campus?
Thanks for the input, I am considering applying ED which is why I am asking all the questions. Alicia

 | 07:23 pm - Prospie Questions: I am a prospie who is going to high school in Geneva, Switzerland but I am half French half American and have a few questions about Macalester: 1. I hear that Mac is quite diverse, do you feel this on campus? 2. I am interested in majoring in English Lit and/or French lit, I hear that English is particularly good, what about French? 3. What is the social life like? 4. Name a few things you like and a few things you dislike about Mac. Thanks for the help, Alicia

| 11:00 pm hello! i know this is a gross long post, but if you can read any of it and give me some thoughts, i would be really grateful!
i just finished my freshman year at a college where i am not totally happy, and am thinking of transferring, possibly to the macalester.
i would likely be double-majoring in english lit and women's studies - so, if any of you in either program could comment, i'd love to hear what you have to say. -how is the range of classes and professors? -are these strong programs here? -in english, do you have to apply specifically to be on the writing track? if you are doing literature, is it possible to also take writing classes?
also, is there an education major or minor at macalester? anyone in it have any particular likes or dislikes concerning it?
one thing i don't like about my current school is that the overall political feel is pretty conservative. -how would you characterize students' politics at macalester? -are there pretty active political groups at macalester?
on transferring: -is anyone else here a transfer? did macalester do much to help you adjust?
okay, i think that's all i have. thank you so much!

 | 07:25 pm I'm a high school junior who is interested in Macalester with two questions:
1. Being a queer female, a queer-friendly school is important to me and the fact that this school ranks high on the Princeton Review list of "gay community accepted" is part of the reason why I'm so interested in applying next year. Could somebody tell me a little bit more about the state of the queer community in general? (general makeup- is it all gay guys for instance, which it is at several schools known for being gay friendly- how popular related clubs and events are, whether the atmosphere is as accepting as the Princeton Review makes it out to be etc.)
2. If I went to Macalester, there's no doubt that I would major in urban studies. Anybody with this major who can give me their opinion of the program?
Thanks to anyone who can help me. I really appreciate it.

 | 09:25 pm - Applying to Macalester Hey guys! I'm currently a Junior in High School and am planning on applying to Mac next year. If there's any tips or anything that I should really concentrate on, please let me know!
My SAT scores weren't that good, granted I took them cold last time, but am taking them May 5th and will study this summer and take them 2 more times during the fall.
I'm 35 out of 272 in my class, meaning that I'm in the top 13%.
I have straight A's in everything but math, which I usually get a low B, high C in no matter how much I study or how hard I try. I'm not going into a math related major anyway, so it shouldn't really matter as much right?
I'm planning on majoring in Japanese. I'm currently in my 2nd semester of beginning Japanese at a local college, and I went to Japan for 3 weeks during the summer of 2006. I'm also planning on spending from March 2008 - January 2009 in a Japanese High School on an exchange (so I'll start college Sept. '09).
Basically, just what else do I have to do to get into Mac??? Thanks for taking the time to respond and good luck on finals!! Current Mood: sleepy Current Music: Fefe Dobson

 | 12:04 pm - bike storage? hey y'all--
is there a place to store bikes during the summer? i'm going to be on campus until graduation, but i'm flying home for a week before i start my internship in minneapolis. i've heard stories that security cuts all the unclaimed bikes off the racks at the end of the school year-- is this true? i don't want to lose my bike during the short time i'll be away from mac.
so...is there on-campus bike storage, or should i use a friend's garage? i'll need to have access to my bike during the summer, so regular storage won't work.
thanks,

 | 07:04 pm - Parking! So, as a first year, I cannot get a parking permit, but need to park my car somewhere, preferably near campus, for the two-and-a-half weeks between spring break and Good Friday.
Does anyone know where I might be able to park on a street during that time? What are the restrictions around here? (If I can score a spot on Macalester Street, will I be able to park there, or are there overnight restrictions there, too?) Current Location: Mac Current Mood: blah
