new news?
I saw Neil Gaiman tonight (was fabulous indeed!) and invariably someone asked about movies, so. I don't actually know if this is new info around here, but I've been here for a fair amount of time, and some of it was new to me, so (cut and pasted from my journal):

-News on the Good Omens movie: Johnny Depp is still wanted for Crowley, and still wants to play Crowley. Robin Williams was originally signed on to play Aziraphale, Madame Tracy and Hastur--I kid you not--but not anymore.
Apparently the movie may in fact be happening now; as he put it yesterday in Portland (and goes and quotes himself): "I thought it was completely dead, but in fact it's just lying in a glass coffin surrounded by dwarves."

So...moving forward? Looks like? No word on an Aziraphale (not actually Williams, thank goodness. Though I know it wouldn't work, Williams as Tracy is a hilarious image.)

Any other new news I may have missed?

As much as I love Robin Williams, I'd have to go on a killing spree if he had been cast as Aziraphale. Or Madame Tracy. Or Hastur.

I am so glad that's not happening now. :) But you know who I am even more afraid of being cast as Aziraphale?

Brian Dennehy. Apparently, Terry Pratchett wanted him for Aziraphale. Worst casting decision ever, anyone?

Agh! It's the words "US actor"---no no no, Az is English. Well, okay, he's an angel. But an ENGLISH one.

As somebody else noted, Williams as Tracy would have indeed been hilarious. But hey, as long as he's not doing Aziraphale, I don't care that it means he's out of the picture entirely. I'm relieved. If indeed they're doing this, the angel's going to he hell to cast.

Yeah. Too bad David Thewlis was only ever good in one movie, huh?

I am so glad Robin Williams is out. I almost cried when I read that earlier... being new to the whole Good Omens thing, it was a rude, nasty shock.

I am sorry, I cannot picture an unattractive angel. I have spent ungodly amounts of time trying to force myself to picture a Robin Williams-esque person in that role, and I cannot do it. Angels are pretty. It is one of the fundamental advantages of being an angel.

Depp as Crowley is great though :D this, I look forward to.

By the way, that said... I think I could overcome it, simply because I think Robin Williams could bring a lot to the role. But I have my mental image to cling to. Did the same thing with LOTR... liked Elijah in the role, hated how he looked.

Also I wish he'd at least stuck with Tracy :(

I have yet to see a role that he did not take on well. And Crowley oozes attitude, and that is something Depp is good at.
Plus he has "good cheekbones."

Augh, I'm both excited and not about this movie. Firstly, just to have a GO movie would be wonderful. ... But then again, movies tend to bring a whole truck-load of people into the fandom (I like the GO fandom at the moment; it's just the right size), and it also tends to skew our mental images of the book. And I like my mental images ...especially of the Horsepeople. Because, dude, they're definitely not going to get anywhere close to my mental images of the Horsepeople. :3

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]elanor_two
2005-10-05 03:51 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, that would be something to worry about--hordes of Depp fangirls storming the fandom. Oy.

On the other hand, I think it would probably die down quickly--it's not as pervasive as the Harry Potter phenom or anything, and I don't imagine it would be quite as big a deal.

Ah, the Horsepeople are tricky...

The idea of a grossly-overinflated fandom occurred to me, but I don't have room to talk, seeing as I just read the book about a week ago. >_> Then again, I had been intending to read it for a few years. That counts, right? >_>

And yes, mental images get skewed. I hate Peter Jackson for taking away my Lothlorien.

would bring unwanted fangirls.

What makes me laugh is that early on Hollywood told Terry Gilliam that there was no market for funny movies with Depp in them. Qua?

There would be a lot of fangirls...but I think it would actually blow over fairly quickly...maybe.

THANK GOD. If Robin Williams was Aziraphale, I might've skipped this movie. Nothing against RW, but I can't risk someone weird like him taking away my image of Aziraphale.

Depp as Crowley. I would love to see that movie. I think Depp could pull it off well, and he's probably as close to my mental images of Crowley as they're ever going to get. Plus he's just an all around good actor.
But when the Depp fangirls swamp fandom... that's were the fear sets in.

But in the end, seeing the movie acted well trumps my perfectly-sized fandom, and it's not like all the good fic will fizzle up and disappear. It'll just be slightly more difficult to find.

Of course, one solution is not making a movie at all. Which would be sad after anticipating new ideas, and a different, vaguely official take on the book, but better than a terrible movie that changes how I picture the characters and setting.

In short, I'm undecided.

Depp would be able to pull it off well, just the right amount of sly/creepy, comedy, and serpentine charm. Though I do agree about the fangirls.

Honestly no clue about Aziraphale.

But Dogma has spoiled me for Metatron. I can't see him as anyone else, but Alan Rickman.

I know the answer to this! Animation!

But the problem with that is, there's still Johnny Depp. And Danny Elfman would end up doing covers of Queen and Elvis. No offense, but that's just wrong.

Well, yes. Though I tend to think there would be less Depp fangirls for an animated Depp than a live action Depp.
Okay, so if Danny Elfman DIDN'T do covers of Queen...it would work. :)

Not Depp. Depp is the DEATH of all Fandoms.
The fandom is nice and clean, I don't want it all full of fangirls.
I want Crowley to be somebody I don't really know - like a less femme Cillian Murphey maybe?
And we MUST have an english actor, preferably pretty and "gayer than a treeful of monkies on nitrous oxide".
And I hate Williams D :

If they end up with someone else as Crowley, I am seeking out Mr. Depp and demanding to know why he failed to show up on the first day of shooting and demand his rightful place.

Williams as Aziraphale... no. Madame Tracy, now that would be funny, but... no. I just don't think he can do stuffy-english-bibliophile-who-is-dead-sexy-under-that-all-that-tweed.

There was a guy in a movie I caught part of once that would have been *perfect* for Aziraphale... but now I don't remember the actor or the movie. Damn.
