Henna Question! [25 Jul 2008|10:23pm]

mournbringer
[ mood | worried ]

This is my first time trying henna and even though I've got directions printed out I'm not understanding how much indigo to use. I got two bundle packs of Dark Brunette (I have medium brown, barely shoulder length SUPER curly and frizzy hair with much lighter brown ends...it looks stupid). I bought the second pack because my hair was BSL at that point but it spiraled into crappiness again and had to be cut. I've mixed the henna/amla together with orange juice and will apply it tomorrow morning *but* should I use both 100g packs of indigo to achieve a dark brown color? I'm assuming I do since it came as a bundle and all I have to do is mix it and apply it. I'm planning on leaving it on for about 4 hours and we'll see what happens. I didn't do a strand test since I figure it can't look any worse than it does now.

I'm also going to be on the beach (but hiding under the umbrella) pretty much all day Sunday...is too much sun not good for freshly hennaed hair? Sorry about the annoying questions, I've searched the community and mehandi.com and couldn't get actual answers.

I'm hoping this changes the texture of my hair/scalp for good so I can just use shampoo bars. I'd love to decrease my product dependability entirely (currently using -cone free, unfortunately expensive stuff from Whole Foods) but my curly hair is so unruly without them. I've tried going CO, the shampoo bars made my hair feel waxy, and ACV rinses did nothing except sting my eyes. Henna is really my last resort at this point, so hopefully it turns out ok. Thank you in advance!

A whole month! [25 Jul 2008|06:09pm]

Ha-ha, yeah, I know. A month is pretty much nothing compared to women who have hair at BSL/waist/longer. But I just started, and going a month without hacking off a bunch of my hair is actually quite the accomplishment for me!

Faith in Nature Rosemary shampoo/conditioner. Yay or nay? [24 Jul 2008|08:54pm]

fullofsparks
I recently ran out of my stock of my usual shampoo, the Aubrey Green Tea shampoo and cream rinse, so I've been switching between the small handful my local health food shop sells. I tried Weleda, the Lemon Balm and Orange Blossom shampoo and conditioner, but I found it either left my hair oily (it's usual state when unwashed), or completely dried it out - there was no in-between, no matter how much or how little conditioner I used. So I'm switching again, this time to Faith in Nature's Rosemary shampoo and conditioner. I'm hoping you guys can do an ingredients check for me, I'm a little out of touch with these things. )

Long hair in wigs [24 Jul 2008|04:29pm]

Hello!
Anyone here has ever used a wig? I'd love to know the best way to part the hair in a wig cap, to make it reliable to keep a wig in place.
Thank you!

Pictures of my hair! [24 Jul 2008|03:25pm]

This is the first time I've made pictures of my hair specifically, and I intend to keep doing it every month of so to see what different products do to my hair and just to record progress. And since I know some of you like looking at other people's hair (I know I do!), here are the pictures! The first one is not great quality, but it shows length. The second shows the texture of my hair.

How do I use foam ear protectors? plus getting those bits on my temples [24 Jul 2008|01:27pm]

elettaria
I am going to do a cassia/henna gloss in a couple of hours (50g cassia and 1/2 tsp rhubarb root currently sitting in chamomile/marigold decoction, plus 1 tsp henna which will be added along with the conditioner just before application). I have just bought a bag of foam ear protectors off eBay. They turn out to be round pieces of foam, 3" or so in diameter and a fetching shade of aqua. Does anyone have any clue how to use them?

Also, I always have trouble getting mixtures to stick to the hair on my temples due to the shape of my hairline, and since my hair is fairer there it's very noticeable whaen I miss it. Any tips? Coat my face in barrier ointment and then spread the cassia gloss around lavishly, so that part of my forehead is cassiaed and cling-filmed and it can't escape?

Victorian hair weaving? [23 Jul 2008|01:21pm]

lolitahaze1
I am not sure if this is "on topic", but I thought maybe some of you may know about this since most have a wonderful sense of hair. I was wondering if anyone knew how to do Victorian style hair weaving or could point me in the right direction. I tried google, but I don't know if I am wording it wrong or what. I get links that are selling old Victorian hair jewelry and more, but not really a how to. I figure instead of clogging my drains with my hair I could try to do something with it. Thanks.

Hi, it's me again with questions. [23 Jul 2008|09:19am]

fishious
  Me.

I was in the pharamacy yesterday with a $15 package of do it yourself golden highlights. I chickened out. I was thinking, I could get my friend who's a hair dresser to do the kit for me since I'm beauty-retarded, but how bad is the quality of this stuff? Am I so much better off just paying the 100+ dollars to get professional highlights. I was just not going to get highlights because I didn't want to take the chance of them looking like shit, but I keep dreaming (seriously!) that I have highlights. Almost every night, I dream that my hair is all different colors that one could imagine. In the pic above, I had been outside in the sun for a little while, and as you can see my hair which is normally medium brown, gets a slight golden look...I want to bring that out more I think, so highlights would be a good idea, no? My hair looks kinda short in the front, but that's just cuz it's angled...much longer in the back.

So she I go ahead with it and buy the store packaged highlights and get my friend to do them for me? Or make an appt. at some point for professional highlights?

Hair Taping Tutorial [23 Jul 2008|07:45am]

dragonlady7
During summer, is your hair hot on your neck? Getting frizzy and tangled and sweaty? Driving you crazy?
Or is it winter where you are, and your hair is a staticky mess?
Do you do a sport, or a physical job, and need your hair securely out of the way?

Hair taping! It has become my fallback hairstyle for all emergencies. I have basically spent the entire summer with my hair taped.
I have iliac-length hair (I just measured the other day and it's 38 inches long), very fine and stick-straight and uncurlable, and so tangly that leaving it down, even half-down, for more than an hour is not an option. But I think this style would work with almost any length of hair, depending how you arranged it, and as long as you can get a braid in it, the texture or thickness doesn't matter. You don't have to even do it well, as the complicated look of the finished product is excellent for hiding mistakes. Even after sleeping on it for a couple of days while camping in the wilderness, it still looks cool and plausibly intentional, and most importantly, is still comfortable. So for me it has become the perfect hairstyle to show off the length and color of my pretty hair, while allowing me to completely forget that I even have hair. It only takes me about twenty minutes to do the hairstyle, and most of that time is spent just braiding it. Taking it down is probably ten minutes, depending on how much ribbon I used; only once have I gotten the ribbon tangled in my hair, and it was easily removed by unbraiding the braid. Twenty minutes for a hairstyle that lasts days isn't bad at all, and when so many of my hairstyles have hour-long "recovery" times at the end (wherein I spend an hour or so just picking out the tangles), this is pretty awesome for me.
Tutorial this-a-way! )

unhappy [22 Jul 2008|04:13pm]

i am Unhappy. we have a decent car...the unexpected trip to arizona took out the a/c. seriously, it just refuses to blow at all on the passenger side and doesnt cool the car. we're in houston, land of 80%+ humidity and its been in the 90's for a couple weeks now.

i cant put my hair up all the time, it hurts my head, plus trying to keep my arms up long enough to twist and clip it makes me nearly cry with pain right now.

i'm already showing signs of damage on the ends (ok, so there's residual hair dye at the ends which isnt helping matters along any either) and i know its going to be worse by the time fall gets here and we can get another vehicle (3K for the a/c repair isnt gonna happen!).

do i break down and cut it now? or let it get snarled and more damaged then cut it?

help?

Dryness vs Damage? [22 Jul 2008|11:50am]

cyrrus25
I have BSL hair with ends that feel really dry and brittle, but since I went off SLS and -cones a few months ago I've had very few splits. My ends still feel rather crispy, though, and while using coconut oil makes them feel less dry, they don't seem to make it back to the healthy feeling of the rest of my hair.

This may sound stupid, but I'm genuinely unsure: is there a difference between dry hair and damaged hair? I was under the impression that splits and breaks were damage, and dryness was just a loss of moisture and possibly reparable.

Everyone tells me I should cut off the dry bits because they're "damaged," but I don't see much evidence of breaks or splits at ALL. I'm not sure what to do. I want to keep my hair as healthy as possible (so the ends won't be horrid when I reach my goal of classic length), but I also don't want to lose length if it isn't necessary.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Hey, I'm new to this community, but definitely not new to having long hair! :)

Pictures of my hair )

I'm also no-poo, but as you can see (or can't... those photos are pretty bad lol) my ends are really damaged. I've faced the reality that the only -true- way to repair the broken ends is to chop them off, but I don't really have the heart to.

Anyway, just wanted to share, long hair is awesome :) As an artist, definitely one of the best things to draw and paint! And in purple, too :D

Wedding hair [21 Jul 2008|09:14pm]

[ music | Your mom goes to college. ]

So it seems like more than a few people are getting married in the next year and I don't know about anybody else, but I'm starting to think about how I ought to wear my hair. It's classic length and very straight, so I want it in braids (but not a long braid that covers the back of my gown).

Any ideas? Ladies who are married and had their hair done for their wedding, or anything else a bit more formal (or if you do the Renaissance Faire thing). Photos would be really helpful.

I'm going to be wearing this across my forehead (and there's a chain that goes across the back to hold it tight).

100+ temperatures with long [21 Jul 2008|08:49pm]

aerogoddes
Living in Arizona is one thing, living in Arizona during the monsoon season is even worse. My hair is finally to the point where I'd call it long (but still not as long as I'd like it) and I'm running out of ideas to keep my hair off the back of my neck.

My hair is thick so high pony tails are uncomfortable. I am all thumbs when it comes to French twists and buns. I try to wrap my hair in a bun and then use hair sticks, but they always fall out or never feel secure.

Any ideas for how I can keep my hair off of my neck/shoulders besides a basic pony tail, or how to make a twist/bun more secure?

Picture of length for reference. )

A good haircut experience! (*GASP*) [21 Jul 2008|07:43pm]

wingsfromashes
[ mood | impressed ]

I got my hair cut yesterday. Really I only had the length in back trimmed, because it's finally starting to grow back from the massive hackfest that occurred last year (wherein my buttcrack-touching hair was reduced to just past the shoulder), and then my angled layers given a bit of help, but that's actually beside the point to my post.

What I really wanted to say was how pleased I was with how well it went. All my life, my experience, both firsthand and from hearing the horror stories of others, is that people who cut hair for a living love cutting hair like whoa. I mean, insomuch as they want to chop everyone's hair off super super short.

I've only been to this place twice, but the first time, the woman who cut my hair kept raving about my hair, saying she wished she could grow hers out and all this. Yesterday, it was a different woman, who told me it was beautiful (TWICE) and looked like I took good care of it. I didn't feel like getting into telling her "That's because I don't shampoo it ever". I just said "Thank you, I try" and let her start snipping. She did try to blowdry me at the end and I told her politely, "Oh, you don't have to do that, I don't mind if it's damp". Maybe she got the hint, because she blew back the front a little and then stopped. But anyway, she also told me she wouldn't cut it if she were me (the length that is). A haircutting person did not want to cut my hair! I even had told her she could take two inches max if she wanted to, and I think she barely took one.

I realize all people are different, and that includes even within one place that you go, but I'm still really impressed. Another thing I found interesting was that both of the stylists actually acted surprised when I said I wanted to colour it again, although the one cutting my hair acted like she didn't know what henna was and the other one told me it was still damaging to hair! I told her I meant just pure henna and not the kits mixed with chemicals. She didn't answer that, so maybe she realized she wasn't talking about the same thing. Of course, she may have just thought I was an idiot or something, but that's okay. I'm not the one peddling bottles of parabens and sulfates to people. :P

Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience. Apparently it is possible to actually keep your hair and still go get it trimmed by a professional. At least sometimes! :)
