Nunhead Cemetery is perhaps the least known, but most attractive, of the great Victorian Cemeteries of London. Consecrated in 1840, it is one of the seven great Victorian cemeteries established in a ring around the outskirts of London. It contains examples of the magnificent monuments erected in memory of the most eminent citizens of the day, which contrast sharply with the small, simple headstones marking common, or public, burials. It's formal avenue of towering limes and the Gothic gloom of the original Victorian planting gives way to paths which recall the country lanes of a bygone era. Invocation tonight - tube suspensions [19 Apr 2008|11:45am] dave_exile Those coming to Invocation tonight should note that both the Central and District lines through Tower Hill tube station are suspended today and tomorrow for planned engineering works. Happily the Metropolitan line is unaffected, so this can be taken to Aldgate tube station, which is a short walk from The Minories. Alternatively, the Hammersmith & City line stops at Aldgate East, also very close by. There are plenty of bus services to The Tower Of London and Aldgate, which seem to be running as normal with no significant problems. 1 comment|post comment

What's a goth to do? ;) [16 Mar 2008|09:39pm] marpesia_m Hello, I'm in London for the month and have not have the time to check out the Time Out or London's alternative mag (do they still publish that? You know, the one you could sporadically get your hands on each month in Camden Town). Is there anything new to check out in the goth community in terms of pubs, clubs and gigs? I'd appreciate someone going through the trouble of actually giving me a heads up. Is the Devonshire still around? And what of the Intrepid Fox. Any venues likeTenebrae? (Yes, it has been that long since I have been in London?) Lastly, any groups of the Victorian bend (who won't will not completely scoff at the lack of opulent clothes as I tend to travel light) who might be holding meetings, gatherings, etc? Instead the 'venue' now announces itself in bright big shiny letters as the HOBGOBLIN*. On both the front and the side, also adding 'live music venue' too. The little sign near the door proclaiming it as an 'alternative' pub has also gone.
